Freshman scores 24 points in her collegiate debut
Freshman Lexi Fleming scored a game-high 24 points in her collegiate debut, propelling the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to a 70-60 win over Valparaiso University Sunday afternoon (Nov. 29). The game, the 2020-21 opener for both teams, was held at the Stroh Center.
Junior Kadie Hempfling scored 10 points for the Brown and Orange as a total of nine different players found the scoresheet.
BGSU led by just a single point, 48-47, after three quarters, but the Falcons went on a 19-1 run to begin the fourth period, sealing the victory. Valpo's first field goal of the quarter did not come until the home team had built a 19-point lead and just 2:29 remained in the contest.
Â
Senior Angela Perry had nine points, while classmate Madisen Parker and sophomore Elissa Brett had six apiece. Brett led the Falcons with 10 rebounds on the day.
TURNING POINT
• BGSU trailed for a total of just 17 seconds on Sunday. But, after the Falcons led by as many as 10 points late in the third quarter, the Crusaders got back within a single point, 48-47, after 30 minutes.
• But, BG scored the first 13 points of the fourth quarter as part of a 19-1 run. Fleming began the run with a three-point field goal and the freshman would score eight points during that 19-1 surge.
• Hempfling had four points and a pair of assists in that stretch.
• When Fleming stole the ball, was fouled and hit a pair of free throws, BGSU's lead was 67-48 with just 2:43 to go. Valpo could not get any closer than the final 10-point margin thereafter.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I'm really proud of our 40-minute effort. It was clearly a first game for both teams, but we won because of our defense. That's been a challenge for us during my first two years here, but today, we won because we were able to get consistent defensive stops. We had a big run in the fourth quarter, after they had a run, and I thought that really set the tone to finish the game."

HIGHLIGHTS | POSTGAME INTERVIEWS
FIRST QUARTER
• In a harbinger of things to come, freshman Lexi Fleming scored the first points of the game, and the season. She came up with a steal near midcourt and headed in for a layup in the opening minute of the contest.
• After the Crusaders' Caitlin Morrison answered with a three-point field goal, junior Kadie Hempfling knocked down a triple try of her own, and the Falcons never trailed again.
• Hempfling's bucket began a 7-0 run that also saw Fleming knock down a pair of free-throw attempts and sophomore Elissa Brett hit a driving layup.
• The Crusaders crept back within a single point, but senior Angela Perry and Brett each made a pair of charity tosses in the final minute of the quarter, giving the Brown and Orange a 13-8 lead.
SECOND QUARTER
• Another Brett layup was followed by a Perry triple, giving BGSU an 18-9 lead. The lead reached 10 points after Hempfling scored on a driving turnaround layup.
• But, back came the visitors, as a Shay Frederick three-ball was part of a 7-0 run. After Fleming came up with an impressive offensive rebound and putback in traffic, Valpo scored four-straight points to make it a 23-22 game with four minutes left in the half.
• Three Fleming free throws were answered by Cara VanKempen's long-range shot, and the teams traded points until a Fleming layup was followed by sophomore Olivia Trice's three-pointer that gave the hosts a 34-28 lead. VU's Carie Weinman made a layup to close the first-half scoring.
• After shooting just 17 percent from the floor in the first period, the Falcons were 7-of-14 from the field in the second.
THIRD QUARTER
• Freshman Kenzie Lewis grabbed an offensive board and was fouled, splitting a pair of free throws, early in the second half. Then, a Lewis steal led to a Fleming bucket in transition. Perry's shots from the stripe gave the hosts a 39-32 lead at the media timeout.
• Senior Clare Glowniak banked home a shot from a tough angle, then scored inside after a nifty pass from Brett, and the hosts led by a 43-34 score. After a quick Valpo layup, Glowniak grabbed a rebound and kicked the ball to senior Madisen Parker for a three-pointer that gave the Falcons a 46-36 lead with under three minutes remaining in the period.
• But, Marlee Profitt hit a shot of her own from beyond the arc, and fast-break layups from Leah Earnest and Profitt followed. Two Grace White free throws made it a 9-0 run and a one-point game, and the teams traded buckets to keep the margin at a single point after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Valparaiso missed four shots that each would have given the Crusaders the lead in the first minute-plus of the fourth quarter. Before all was said and done, however, VU would miss 10-straight shots in the fourth period before finally hitting a shot with just 2:29 to go.
• Fleming took a pass from Hempfling, faked a three-point try to get her defender in the air, then took a dribble to her left and fired a long-range attempt that found nothing but net. That bucket gave BG a 51-47 lead with 8:23 to go.
• That bucket, of course, began a 13-point run as part of the larger 19-1 surge. Perry hit a pair of free throws before Lewis found Parker for a right-wing triple, and a Perry steal led to Hempfling's driving layup and a 58-47 lead.
• Then, Hempfling drove into the paint, drew four defenders toward her and kicked the ball to an open Fleming in the left corner. The freshman's long-range attempt was on the mark with 5:07 remaining.
• Frederick split a pair of free throws, but Hempfling stole the ball and fed Lewis for a layup, and Lewis returned the favor, pounding the ball inside to Hempfling for a bucket. Two Fleming shots from the stripe made it a 67-48 game.
• After going 0-for-10 to begin the period, the Crusaders were 4-of-5 to end it, cutting BG's 19-point lead to 10 in the final two-plus minutes.

Our statistical records go back to the mid-1970s. In that time, no freshman has ever scored as many as 24 points in her collegiate debut.
