Fleming's late FTs give BGSU the lead for good
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Freshman Lexi Fleming hit two free throws with 17.3 seconds left, giving the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team the lead for good, and the Falcons went on to a 64-62 win over Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 6). The non-conference thriller was held at the Stroh Center.
With the victory, the Falcons are now 3-0 on the young season. The Panthers drop to 3-1.
Â
NOTE OF THE DAY: FOUR SCORE AND ZERO DAYS AGO...
• Just four Falcons found the scoresheet on Sunday, with all four scoring in double digits. Freshman Lexi Fleming scored over 20 points for the second time in as many career home games, with 22 against the Panthers.
• Sophomore Elissa Brett had a career-high 17 points, while junior Kadie Hempfling had 13. Senior Clare Glowniak rounded out the Falcons' scoring quartet with a career-high 12 points.
Sydney Staver had 15 points off the bench to pace three double-digit scorers for the Panthers, while Megan Walstad had 11 and Brandi Bisping 10.
Neither team led by more than five points all afternoon long. The Falcons forged ahead on a pair of Fleming free throws late in the first half, and did not trail again until Walstad's bucket with 3:11 remaining in the game. That bucket was part of an 8-1 Panther run that put the visitors up by five points with just over two minutes to go.
But, a Hempfling three-pointer cut the Falcons' deficit to two points and began a game-ending 7-0 run. BGSU's final four points came at the foul line, with Fleming hitting the tying and go-ahead shots and Glowniak doubling BG's lead with 3.9 seconds remaining. A last-second shot by the Panthers was off the mark as the horn sounded.
The game featured nine ties and 11 lead changes.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I'm so incredibly proud of our team. Obviously, we were in a tough spot with a little over a minute left. But, we've been in these situations a lot. Last year, we clawed our way into a lot of games, and today, our team took a big step forward in gutting out a win, in finding a way to put together possessions, hit free throws, get stops at the end and beat a very good Milwaukee team. There are not enough wonderful things to say about our team and our effort today."
HIGHLIGHTS
POSTGAME INTERVIEWS – GLOWNIAK & FRALICK
FIRST QUARTER
• The Panthers surged out to an early lead, scoring on the first two possessions of the game. Sophomore Elissa Brett's three-point play at the 7:46 mark put the Falcons on the board, but Brandi Bisping answered with a three-point play of her own and Milwaukee had a 7-3 lead.
• Brett drove the paint and drew Bisping's second foul of the day, and the BG soph knocked down both free-throw tries. That began a 6-0 run for the hosts, as senior Clare Glowniak hit a turnaround baby hook shot, then scored inside for a 9-7 BG lead.
• Sydney Staver responded with a three-point field goal for the visitors, but back-to-back triples by junior Kadie Hempfling gave the Falcons a 15-10 lead and prompted a Milwaukee timeout. First, freshman Lexi Fleming fed Hempfling for a trey from the top of the arc. Then, freshman Kenzie Lewis spotted Hempfling on the left wing for her second-straight long-distance make.
• The Panthers answered with a 7-0 run, taking the lead when McKaela Schmelzer's nifty bounce pass found Kendall Nead underneath the hoop in transition.
• Fleming scored the game's next five points, hitting two shots from the stripe, then taking a Brett pass and hitting a corner three with just under a minute left in the period. Staver answered with a triple of her own, but Brett was fouled and knocked down two shots from the stripe for a 22-20 lead after one period.
SECOND QUARTER
• MKE's Miquela Santoro knocked down a three-ball on the first possession, but Glowniak answered with a bucket late in the shot clock, and Fleming hit a nifty one-hander for a 26-23 BG lead.
• The visitors reeled off seven-straight points, including a Megan Walstad three and a Bre Cera layup, to take a 30-26 advantage, and the Falcons used a timeout. Out of the break, Glowniak laid the ball off to Hempfling for a layup, then scored herself, with a spinning one-handed bank shot that tied the game at 30-30.
• But, Nead knocked down a long-distance try to give the visitors the lead once again. BG answered with a Fleming layup and a Glowniak free throw,Â
but another Staver triple put the Panthers back up by three. BG, however, would respond by scoring the final six points of the half.
• First, Fleming hit a nifty floater, and the freshman then stole the ball, was fouled and drained a pair of charity tosses. A Glowniak offensive rebound kept a possession alive and resulted in a pair of Hempfling shots from the line with 21.4 seconds to go, and BG got a defensive stop to end the half.
THIRD QUARTER
• Bisping knocked down a three-point try to tie the score, but Brett answered with a pull-up jumper from the foul line, and Hempfling stole the ball and fired it ahead to Fleming, who was fouled and hit the resulting two shots for a 43-39 lead.
• Fleming answered a Walstad bucket with a layup, and after a Schmelzer hoop, Brett knocked down a turnaround jumper with the shot clock winding down, giving the Brown and Orange a 47-43 lead.
• Nead hit a three-point try after her teammates had come up with a pair of offensive boards, but Brett made a pair of free throws, and Glowniak hit twice from the stripe a minute later.
• With BGSU leading by three, the Panthers inbounded the ball in their offensive end of the floor. Fleming stole that inbounds pass, deflecting the ball over its intended MKE target, grabbing it and sailing in for a layup just before the buzzer sounded. BG led, 53-48, after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Brett took a Lewis pass and hit a jumper early in the period, but that shot –with 8:43 on the clock – would be the Falcons' final field goal in a span of over seven minutes.
• Brett's bucket gave BG a 55-50 lead, but Bisping responded with a quick layup, and two Staver free throws made it a one-point game. Fleming split a pair of free throws, but Walstad's driving layup tied the score with 6:08 left, and BGSU then went four-straight possessions without scoring.
• The Panthers were not having a great deal of success at the other end, but a Walstad layup with 3:11 to go broke the scoring drought and gave the visitors a 58-56 lead.
• Brett was fouled on a drive and made one free throw to bring the Falcons within a point. But, Staver knocked down a jumper, and after a BG miss, Staver was fouled out top and hit the resulting shots for a 62-57 MKE lead with 2:08 remaining. But, the Panthers would not score again.
• After falling behind by five, though, the Falcons were called for an offensive foul, giving the ball back to Milwaukee with 1:54 to go. But, just 10 seconds later, Fleming drew an offensive foul on the Panthers, and the freshman then found Hempfling for a corner three. BG's first field goal in a 7:15 span brought the hosts back within two points.
• The visitors were called for a three-second violation, and Brett was fouled underneath the hoop and split her shots with 43.8 seconds left. A Milwaukee travel with 20.6 seconds to go gave the ball back to the Falcons, and Fleming took the ball to the hoop and was fouled. Both of her shots were on target with 17.3 ticks on the clock, giving BG a 63-62 lead.
• The Panthers looked to retake the lead, but a Walstad shot was off the mark, and Glowniak rebounded the ball and was fouled with 3.9 seconds left. She made her first shot at the line, but missed the second.
• Bisping rebounded the ball and the visitors quickly used a timeout. After the break, an off-balance shot by Bisping was off the mark as time expired.
STATS
• As mentioned, four Falcons found the scoresheet, and all four were in double digits on the day. In addition to her game-high 22 points, Lexi Fleming led the Orange and Brown with six rebounds. The other three Falcons who scored in double figures – Elissa Brett, Clare Glowniak and Kadie Hempfling – had five rebounds apiece.
• Fleming and fellow freshman Kenzie Lewis combined for six assists and six steals. Both had three assists, and Lewis had a game-high four steals while Fleming had two.
• Both Brett and Fleming drew eight Milwaukee fouls on the day.
• Sydney Staver had 15 points off the bench for the Panthers, while Megan Walstad and Brandi Bisping had 11 and 10, respectively.
• As a team, the Falcons shot 38.3 percent to MKE's 36.8%. BG was just 4-of-18 from three-point range, with the visitors going 8-of-18 from the arc.
• But, BG got to the free-throw line 31 times, making 24 (77.4%). Milwaukee was perfect from the stripe, but shot just 12 free throws.
