BGSU Back Home To Host Illinois State, Temple

Bowling Green, Ohio - For the first time in more than a month, the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team will compete at home as the Falcons will host both Illinois State and Temple Saturday at 2:00 pm inside Anderson Arena. The meet is scheduled for Diversity and Inclusion Day.
A variety of campus groups and organizations will have information tables on the upper concourse and there will be a celebratory tunnel during introductions. BGSU will give away wristbands and buttons and a post-meet autograph session will be held with the team.
The three teams are extremely evenly matched with Temple ranked No. 50 nationally, Bowling Green No. 51 and Illinois State at No. 56. Of the three teams, the Falcons are the highest ranked squad on balance beam and are second in each of the other three rotations.

THE HISTORY
BGSU is 13-7 all-time against Illinois State. Most recently, the Falcons scored a 193.925 to defeat the Redbirds in Bowling Green during the 2017 season. BGSU has won each of the past two meetings since Illinois State posted a victory in 2009. The Redbirds' last win in Bowling Green came in 1994.
Bowling Green and Temple are 1-1 all-time withe the Owls posting a victory in 2017 in a season-opening quad meet at Penn State. BGSU won at Temple in 1999.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE
Redshirt freshman Tess Muir made her return to the lineup against Eastern Michigan. Muir competed on vault, beam and floor a year ago until an injury ended her season after just four meets. She took to the balance beam against EMU and posted a personal best score of 9.775. A year ago, her best score on beam was 9.625 through the first four meets.
Junior Alex Fochler missed the entire 2019 season after performing on uneven bars in 2018. She returned to the lineup this year. After a slow start against Eastern Michigan, she earned medalist honors in back-to-back meets at Rutgers and at Ball State. She recorded scores of 9.850 and 9.800 in those two contests.
Redshirt sophomore Samantha Marion earned MAC Specialist Of The Week honors following her performance at Eastern Michigan and she has competed on beam and vault in each of the first four meets. Marion had not competed in her first two years at Bowling Green due to injuries.
NEVER TOO EARLY
While the season has yet to reach the halfway mark, a handful of Falcons are already making larger impacts than they previously have.
Senior Jovannah East is averaging a 9.692 on bars and a 9.863 on floor, both ahead of her season average a year ago. Another senior, Taylor Worthington, is scoring 9.792 on beam, ahead of her average of 9.658 in 2019.
Junior Alex Fochler is averaging a 9.588 on floor, competing in the event for the first time in her career. She also has posted a career-best 9.563 average on bars. Junior Elena Lawson is scoring higher on vault (9.694), bars (9.406) and floor (9.794) than in 2019, while junior Samantha Marion is in the lineup for the first time in her career, scoring a 9.769 on vault and a 9.575 on beam.
Sophomore Katelyn Goldstrom competed in just one rotation a year ago, but is taking part in three this year. Her average of 9.344 on bars is markedly better than her 9.150 a year ago, while she is also competing on vault and floor.
Redshirt freshman Tess Muir is averaging a 9.406 on balance beam, an improvement from 9.156 in 2019 before injury cut her season short.
EAST'S OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Jovannah East will go down as one of the greatest gymnasts in BGSU history. Just the second gymnast to qualify for the NCAA National Championships, East has put together a remarkable career through her first 3+ years. East's career accomplishments include the following:

EAST, MARION SEND EARLY SEASON STATEMENTS
Jovannah East and Samantha Marion made early statements with exceptional performances to open the 2020 season against Eastern Michigan. For the efforts, East was named the MAC Gymnast of the Week and Marion was the MAC Specialist of the Week.
East earned her fifth career MAC Gymnast of the Week honor with a 49.300 all-around score, which ranks 16th nationally. She won the all-around title against Eastern Michigan and earned victories in two other events.
Marion, who has missed her first two years due to injuries, debuted with stunning precision, winning the balance beam (9.875) and placing second on vault (9.825) behind only East.Â
OFF TO A GOOD START
A year ago, Bowling Green struggled out of the gate, scoring 189.675 in a quad meet at Alabama. But the Falcons had a much better start this year, recording a 193.325 team score against Eastern Michigan. Although BGSU lost the dual meet, it was the team's second-best score to start a season over the past five years.
