Gottshall throws two-hitter; Everett has 2 hits & 3 RBI
The Bowling Green softball team capped a perfect weekend in Nashville with a 7-1 win over Creighton on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 23). The victory was the Falcons' final game in the Tiger Classic, hosted by Tennessee State.
BGSU, now 6-3 on the season, was a perfect 4-0 on the weekend, downing the host school on Friday and both Central Connecticut State and Rider on Saturday before topping the Bluejays Sunday.
Freshman pitcher Payton Gottshall allowed just two hits in a complete-game effort, walking two batters and striking out eight.
At the plate, three Falcons had multiple-hit games to pace BG's eight-hit attack. Senior Logan Everett was one of those three, and drove in three runs in the win.
Freshman Greta L'Esperance, like Everett, was 2-for-4 at the plate, and L'Esperance stole two bases and scored two runs. Junior Sarah Gonzalez went 2-for-3 against the Bluejays.
GOTTSHALL NAMED MVP; JOINED BY DEES & LOYOLA
• Freshman Payton Gottshall was named the MVP of the Tiger Classic. Gottshall was 4-0 in the circle on the weekend, with an ERA of just 0.71 and an opponent batting average of .111 in the four games.
• Gottshall was joined on the all-tournament team by senior Evelyn Loyola and redshirt sophomore Sammy Dees. That duo went a combined 9-for-17 at the plate over the weekend, teaming up for five doubles, five RBI and eight walks.
• The complete All-Tiger Classic Team is listed at the bottom of the page.
NOTEWORTHY
• BGSU outscored opponents, 26-5, in the four games in Nashville.
• Senior Logan Everett, as mentioned, had three RBI in Sunday's win. She now has a team-leading 10 on the season.
• After just two weekends, Everett has topped her RBI total (eight) for all of last year. She drove in 16 runs in her first three seasons as a Falcon.
• The Creighton game marked Everett's second three-RBI game of her career, and the second in as many weekends. She also drove in three runs in last Friday's (Feb. 14) Indiana State game at the Chattanooga Challenge.
• Senior Taylor Blevins scored at least one run in all four games over the weekend. She was 4-for-4 in stolen-base attempts and scored a total of five runs in Nashville.
• Junior Sarah Gonzalez her her first two-hit game of the season on Sunday. She has reached base in four of her last five plate appearances over the last two games.
• Freshman Payton Gottshall was 4-0 in the circle on the weekend, with an ERA of just 0.71 and an opponent batting average of .111 in the four games. Gottshall has allowed two runs or fewer in all eight appearances this season.
• Freshman Montana Jones recorded her first career stolen base on Sunday, and scored a run against Creighton.
• Fellow freshman Greta L'Esperance had the second two-hit game of her young career. She scored two runs for the second time this season and the second time in as many games, and L'Esperance had the first double and the first two-stolen-base game of her career.
• Senior Evelyn Loyola had a hit and a walk on Sunday. Loyola had five hits, five walks and four RBI in the four games in Nashville.
• Fellow senior Madi McCoy scored two runs on Sunday, her third such game of the season. McCoy leads the Falcons with nine runs scored in nine games this season.
• Freshman Sophie Weber picked up the first RBI of her young career, with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly that scored Blevins with the first run of BG's four-run seventh frame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• For the third consecutive game, the Falcons took a first-inning lead. With one out, freshman Greta L'Esperance doubled to left and took third on a wild pitch. She scored the game's opening run when senior Madi McCoy reached on an error.
• Redshirt sophomore Sammy Dees walked and junior Nikki Sorgi singled to load the bases before senior Logan Everett's base hit plated McCoy to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
• BG starting pitcher Payton Gottshall issued a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning, but after a sacrifice bunt, the Falcon freshman struck out the Bluejays' three and four hitters to retire the side.
• After the walk, Gottshall retired 10-straight batters – six via strikeout – before finally allowing another baserunner with one out in the fourth.
• Meanwhile, the Falcons added to the lead in the third. For the second-straight at-bat, McCoy reached on an error by the Creighton shortstop. Freshman Sophie Bosket sacrificed McCoy to second, and with two outs, senior Evelyn Loyola capped off an impressive at-bat with an RBI single to left. Loyola fouled off six pitches during her 11-pitch at-bat, and battled back after falling behind, 0-2, in the count. Her hit scored McCoy for a 3-0 BG lead.
• CU starter Mikayla Santa Cruz walked junior Payton Hamm and allowed a single to junior Sarah Gonzalez to begin the fourth inning. But, Santa Cruz then struck out the next three Falcons, beginning a stretch in which she retired nine in a row.
• In the bottom of the fourth, Mileah McKelvy broke up Gottshall's no-hit bid with a one-out single, and the next hitter, Kailey Wilson, doubled to drive home the Bluejays' first (and as it turned out, only) run of the game. Gottshall responded by striking out pinch-hitter Saren Croker, before catcher Loyola gunned down pinch-runner Brittney Manthie attempting to steal third.
• Gottshall issued a fifth-inning walk, but did not allow another Creighton baserunner over the final three innings.
• In the BG seventh, the Falcons broke the game open. Senior Taylor Blevins singled and promptly stole second, and a L'Esperance hit put runners at the corners and chased Santa Cruz from the game.
• With Haley Gatica now in the circle for the Bluejays, L'Esperance stole second before McCoy's four-pitch walk loaded the bases. Pinch-hitter Sophie Weber's fly ball to right scored Blevins, and BGSU then executed a double steal to score another run, as pinch-runner Montana Jones took second and L'Esperance scored for a 5-1 lead.
• A two-out walk to Loyola was followed by Everett's double to the gap in right-center, with pinch-runners Jones and Summer Callahan both crossing the plate to cap the scoring and signal the end of the day for Gatica.
• In the bottom of the inning, three fly balls resulted in three outs, giving Gottshall and the Falcons the six-run win.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons will return to Tennessee for the third consecutive weekend, heading to Johnson City for the Buccaneer Classic, hosted by East Tennessee State, next Friday through Sunday (Feb. 28-March 1).
• In that tournament, BGSU will play two games against Tennessee, two vs. host ETSU, and one against Tennessee Tech.
