Heroes Aplenty in BGSU's Win over Ohio at the Stroh
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team got key contributions from a host of players on Wednesday night (Feb. 26), as the Falcons knocked off Ohio University, 82-68, at the Stroh Center. Some of the many highlights, from a BGSU perspective, of the win over the Mid-American Conference East Division leaders...
• Junior Madisen Parker had a game-high 21 points and hit seven three-pointers, just one shy of the school record.
• Freshman Olivia Trice exploded for a career-high 17 points, going 6-for-8 from the field, hitting three long-range shots and adding six rebounds.
• Fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson scored in double digits for the 21st time this season, with 17 points and three triples of her own.
• Sophomore Kadie Hempfling had seven points, a game-high nine rebounds and a whopping 15 assists.
• Post players Angela Perry and Clare Glowniak scored 8 points apiece. Glowniak went 4-for-4 from the field for the second-straight game.
The Falcons shot nearly 52 percent from the field in the win, and held the Bobcats to just a 32.8% success rate from the floor. Led by Parker's seven three-pointers -- just one away from tying the BGSU school record -- the Orange and Brown knocked down 13 shots from the arc. And, BG outrebounded the visitors by a 38-35 count.

JUST ONE HOME GAME LEFT -- GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!
The Falcons have seen their fair share of games – and then some – go right down to the wire in MAC play this season. On Wednesday, through, the Falcons never trailed in the second half. BG led by seven points after the third quarter, and the hosts scored the first four points of the fourth period to take a double-digit lead. Ohio never got closer than nine points over the remainder of the game.
DID YOU SAY FIFTEEN ASSISTS?
• Yes. Yes we did. Sophomore Kadie Hempfling had 15 assists on Wednesday night vs. Ohio, the highest total by a Falcon since Lindsay Austin also dished out 15 assists over 16 years ago, in a win at Bucknell on Dec. 3, 2003.
• It is believed that Hempfling tied Austin for second place in school history for assists in a game. Dee Knoblauch holds the school record with 18 assists vs. Central Michigan on Feb. 2 1983.
Â
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons were called for an offensive foul on the opening possession of the night, and Cierra Hooks immediately came down and hit a three-pointer, giving the 'Cats a 3-0 lead just 30 seconds in.
• But, the Falcons would respond with the first of numerous runs on the night. Junior Madisen Parker hit a three-pointer, off of a pass by sophomore Kadie Hempfling – a harbinger of things to come in both cases – and the score was tied.
• That Parker triple sparked a 9-0 run for the hosts, as junior Angela Perry sank a pair of free throws, and fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson and Hempfling each hit floaters in the paint.
• A Caitlyn Kroll layup off of a steal stopped that run, but Thompson came right back with a driving layup, and Parker's second three-ball of the night made it a 14-5 game just over halfway through the period.
• But, the visitors went on a run to take the lead. Kroll's three-pointer was followed by two buckets by Gabby Burris, and when Hooks hit a triple try, the 'Cats had a 10-0 run and a 15-14 lead.
• Freshman Olivia Trice answered Ohio's run with one of her own. Trice hit a driving up-and-under layup, then took a pass from freshman Elissa Brett and knocked down a catch-and-shoot triple and a 19-15 lead. Hooks answered with a jumper, but Brett was fouled with 3.9 seconds to go in the period, hitting a free throw for a 20-17 lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Trice continued her stellar play as the second quarter got underway, with a putback to open the scoring and a three-pointer to give the Brown and Orange a 25-18 lead. Less than three minutes into the quarter, Trice had 10 points, a new career high.
• Hempfling found a cutting Perry for a layup, and Trice hit Thompson for a left-side three-pointer and a 30-21 BGSU advantage midway through the period. But, back battled the Bobcats.
• Quickly, the visitors erased the BG lead, three points at a time. Erica Johnson connected from the arc, and Amani Burke made back-to-back triple tries to knot the score with just under two minutes left in the half.
• Sophomore Morgan McMillen whipped a pass to Parker for a left-side three-ball, but Johnson connected on another long-range shot of her own. Hempfling drove the lane, drew four players toward her and dished to Perry for a layup with just over a minute left in the period – a bucket that, as it turned out, would give BG the lead for good –and a Johnson free throw in the final seconds closed the first-half scoring and cut BG's lead to a single point at the intermisssion.
THIRD QUARTER
• BGSU got off to a tremendous start to the second half, scoring the first 11 points. That run saw Hempfling assist on a trio of three-pointers, with Parker beginning the third-quarter scoring, After Brett pounded the ball inside to Perry for a bucket, Thompson knocked down a pair of long-distance shots from the leflt side. Her second bucket during that time gave the Falcons a 46-34 lead.
• Johnson ended the run with a hoop, but Parker drained another long-range attempt – off of another Hempfling assist – and BG's lead was 13 points, the largest of the night at that time.
• But, the 'Cats held the Falcons without a point for close to four minutes, as Deesh Beck's three-ball began a 9-0 run for the visitors. A pair of Hooks free throws cut the BG lead to four points with 2:46 left in the period.Â
• Senior Clare Glowniak snapped the run with a left-side jumper, and after the 'Cats answered at the other end, Glowniak took a Hempfling pass and flipped a return pass to the cutting sophomore for a layup and a six-point lead.
• Then, Trice faked a three, took a dribble to her left to avoid a fly-by, and hit a right-wing trey in the final minute of the quarter. A Burke bucket cut BG's lead to 56-49 after 30 minutes.
• BGSU shot 50% in the quarter, and the Falcons went 5-of-9 (55.6%) from the arc in the third period.
FOURTH QUARTER
• The Falcons scored the first four points of the period. After a near turnover, Trice drove into the paint and swished a floater. Then, Hempfling grabbed a defensive rebound and fired a long pass to Glowniak for a layup and a 60-49 lead.
• Glowniak scored again, but an offensive foul nullified the basket, and Hooks quickly scored at the other end to make it a nine-point game But, Ohio would get no closer.
• Hempfling's cross-court pass resulted in a corner three by Parker, and after Johnson answered with a driving layup, Hempfling found Glowniak for a quick bucket and a 65-53 lead with 7:27 to go.
• BG saw Brett whistled for her fifth foul 17 seconds lafter, but after Ohio narrowed the Falcon lead to nine points with a trio of free throws, Thompson hit Glowniak for a short-corner jumper in transition. BG led, 67-56. And, Hempfling's pass resulted in another Parker try that gave the hosts a 70-57 advantage at the evening's final media timeout.
• With Ohio applying a pree from time to time, however, Hooks fouled out of the game with 4:26 to go, and Thompson's driving layup gave the Falcons a 15-point lead.
• Glowniak was called for her fifth foul at the 3:55 mark, and a pair of Beck free throws got Ohio back within 12 points. But, Hempfling hit a free throw, and after Beck converted a layup, Hempfling found Thompson for a transition layup. Ohio missed a shot, and Trice was fouled and made both attempts from the stripe to give BG a 77-62 lead with 2:51 to go.
• Beginning with those Trice tosses, the Falcons went 7-of-8 at the line over the remainder of the game. The Bobcats cut the BG lead to 12 on several occasions, but could draw no closer.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• As mentioned, BGSU shot nearly 52% to Ohio's 32.8% from the field on the night. The Falcons had a better field-goal percentage in each of the four quarters.
• BGSU shot 50% from the field in the third quarter and 61.5% in the fourth. The Falcons went 16-of-29 from the field (55.2%) in the second half.
• Hempfling had 10 of her 15 assists after halftime, including six in the fourth quarter alone.
• Glowniak went 4-for-4 from the floor for the second consecutive game. Over the Falcons' last three contests, she is 10-of-11 from the field.
• Parker hit seven three-pointers for the third time this season.
• Burk led Ohio with 18 points, with Johnson scoring 17. Hooks, who tied the Ohio school record with 41 points in the 'Cats' last game (at Akron on Saturday), had 15 points on 5-of-16 shooting.
• Hooks, Johnson and Burke each made five field goals in the game, but the trio was a combined 15-of-47 (31.9%) for the contest.
