One Big Inning Proves Pivotal in Each Game for Softball Sunday
March 01, 2020 | Softball
BGSU drops a pair at the Buccaneer Classic
One big inning proved to be pivotal in each game on Sunday (March 1), as the Bowling Green softball team dropped a pair of contests at the Buccaneer Classic in Johnson City, Tenn. The Falcons fell to Tennessee Tech by a 4-0 count on Sunday morning, before losing a 9-3 decision to nationally-ranked Tennessee in the evening.
Freshman Payton Gottshall suffered the loss in the circle in each game, but the final scores – particularly in the latter contest – do not reflect how well she pitched.
The Massillon native allowed only three hits over the first five innings vs. the Lady Vols, who are ranked 20th and 22nd, respectively, in the national polls.
Gottshall and junior Madison French split the pitching duties in the TTU game, with Gottshall allowing two runs and four hits before leaving midway through the game. Six of the 10 batters she retired were by strikeout.
French came on with one out in the fourth, allowing three hits and two runs (both unearned) over the remainder of the contest.
In the nightcap, Gottshall went all the way vs. the Lady Vols, striking out 13. She allowed more than two earned runs in a game for the first time in her BGSU career, although three of UT's runs were unearned.
But, opposing pitchers were dealing on Sunday as well. TTU's Alyssa Arden threw a one-hitter in the opener, striking out 11, while UT's Samantha Bender allowed just three hits – including two by senior Madi McCoy – in the nightcap.
Both Arden and Bender issued just one walk, and Bender struck out three.
NOTEWORTHY
• McCoy's homer vs. the nationally-ranked Lady Vols was her first of the season and the 10th of her BGSU career. She missed a third of last season, her first with the Falcons, due to injury, and has hit those 10 homers in 45 games in the Orange and Brown.
• McCoy scored two of BG's runs on Sunday evening. It marked her fourth two-run game of the season, and she has scored a team-high 11 runs this year.
• Senior Logan Everett had a seventh-inning sacrifice fly to plate McCoy in the seventh inning vs. the Lady Vols, Everett's team-leading 11th RBI of the season.
• BGSU had four freshmen in the starting lineup for the UT game. Montana Jones (right field) and Sophie Weber (first base) each were in the starting lineup for the first time in their respective Falcon careers, and were joined by Gottshall and Greta L'Esperance (second base).
BGSU-TTU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• TTU pitcher Alyssa Arden limited the Falcons to just one hit in a complete-game victory. Arden walked just one batter and struck out 11 in improving to 6-1 on the year.
• BGSU's only baserunners were junior Nikki Sorgi, senior Logan Everett and freshman Greta L'Esperance. Sorgi worked her way back in the count after falling behind 0-2 to lead off the second inning. She worked a nine-pitch walk and moved to second on senior Evelyn Loyola's sacrifice bunt, but was stranded there after Arden whiffed the next two batters.
• Everett was hit by a pitch with one down in the fifth, but again, Arden got a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
• L'Esperance reached on a two-out bunt single in the bottom of the sixth and promptly stole second, but a fly ball to left produced the third out.
• Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles took the lead against freshman Payton Gottshall in the third. Gottshall had allowed just one baserunner in the first two innings, striking out five in that time. But, KaDedra Temple was hit by a pitch and Sydney Love-Baker followed with a single, putting two runners aboard with no outs. A fielder's choice produced the first out, but Haeli Bryson singled through the right side of the infield to plate the game's first run.
• In the fourth, Alexis Trimiar singled with one out, and after junior Madison French replaced Gottshall in the circle, Shelby Penning was hit by a pitch. A ground ball advanced the runners, and a wild pitch scored Trimiar. The inning was extended on an outfield error that allowed Penning to score, and Jessie Lowery tripled down the line to add another run.
• Gottshall suffered the loss, allowing two runs and four hits before leaving with one out in the fourth She walked one batter and struck out six.
• French pitched 3.2 innings of relief, giving up two runs – both unearned – and three hits. The junior walked one and fanned two.
• Trimiar (2-for-3) and Bryson (2-for-4) each had two hits to pace a seven-hit attack for TTU.
BGSU-TENNESSEE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Just prior to the BGSU game, the Lady Vols lost a 4-3 walk-off decision to host East Tennessee State, ending a streak of 100 consecutive wins over in-state foes.
• After freshman Payton Gottshall retired UT in order in the top of the first, striking out the final two hitters, senior Madi McCoy gave BGSU an early lead in the bottom of the inning, with a homer off of the flagpole in left-center.
• But, the Lady Vols responded with a four-run second inning. After a leadoff walk, the next batter popped up a bunt attempt that fell just in front of diving BGSU catcher Evelyn Loyola for a single. A hit batter loaded the bases, and Madison Webber lofted a ball that landed in the outfield. The play was originally called an error, but was changed to a two-run single. Either way, the Lady Vols had the lead.
• UT plated two more runs in the inning, capped by Chelsea Seggern's flare to left-center that made it a 4-1 game.
• After that one-out hit, Gottshall struck out McCrary, the first of eight-straight batters that she would retire. She whiffed six of those eight batters, including two in the third and all three in the fourth.
• But, UT starter Samantha Bender kept the Falcons at bay after the McCoy homer. She did not allow another baserunner until walking freshman Sophie Weber with two down in the fifth.
• By that time, it was a 6-1 game as the Lady Vols had scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth. Those runs came via a walk, an error, a stolen base and a sac fly.
• In the sixth, the Lady Vols got a two-out rally to score two more runs. Josie Willingham drew a walk after a 13-pitch plate appearance, and Amanda Ayala followed with a run-scoring double to left-center. Seggern's single then scored Ayala.
• The seventh inning saw UT get an unearned run on a single, an error and a sac fly.
• McCoy and junior Nikki Sorgi had back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the seventh. Loyola's ground ball advanced the runners, and McCoy tagged and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Logan Everett. Sorgi would come home on a wild pitch to cap the scoring.
• Seggern and Kiki Milloy each had two of UT's six hits.
