Five Falcons Named First Team All-MAC
March 02, 2020 | Women's Track and Field
Cleveland, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced that five members of the Bowling Green State University indoor track and field team have been named First Team All-MAC. Kaila Butler was named as MAC Champion in the weight throw, while Ryen Draper, Jazzlynn Gaiters, Savannah Nevels and Iyanna Ross were named as MAC Champions in the 1600 relay.
Butler won her second MAC title and first during the indoor track & field season Friday. She came from behind in the weight throw, earning a mark of 67-feet-3.5 (20.51m) to win the title. Entering as the No. 1 seed, Butler sat in second place through prelims. But on her fourth throw, she became the only competitor to go over 20.00m on the day. Butler adds the weight throw title to the hammer throw championship she earned last spring during the MAC outdoor championships.
Draper, Gaiters, Nevels and Ross won the 1600 relay in dramatic fashion as Ross took the lead on the home stretch for the Falcons. Entering the meet seeded third, the team broke the school record by more than four seconds, running the race in 3:41.47 to shatter the previous record of 3:45.49. It was just the program's third ever MAC Championship in the event and the first since 1992 – a span of 28 years.
The BGSU track and field team will now begin the transition to the outdoor season. The Falcons will open the campaign March 20 at Miami of Ohio's Blizzard Buster. Bowling Green will take part in the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 14-16, hosted by Western Michigan.
