July 21, 2020 | Volleyball
LEXINGTON, Ky.- The Bowling Green State University volleyball team has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for academic excellence with the AVCA Team Academic Award, marking the 20th consecutive season the Falcons have earned the award. The full list of recipients can be found HERE.Â
In being named, BGSU maintains the status of being one of five programs in Division I to be recognized for a minimum of 15 straight years. Of the five, three programs compete in the Mid-American Conference.
The 2019-20 award marks the 21st time in the program's 26-year history that the Falcons have been named for academic excellence by the AVCA. The award is presented to volleyball programs across the country that hold a cumulative team GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.0 scale. In 2020, the award was given to 1,313 teams, once again breaking the all-time record.Â
During the 2019 season, the BGSU volleyball team earned a 3.700 cumulative GPA with a total 10 student-athletes maintaining a 4.0 GPA for the fall semester, including nine student-athletes being named to the Dean's List. As for the spring semester, the team concluded with a 3.755 cumulative GPA, seeing 13 student-athletes have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and seven hold a GPA of 4.0 or higher. Additionally, 11 Falcons were named to the Dean's List.Â
Being named for the 20th consecutive season, Bowling Green continues one of the longest active streaks among all NCAA Division I volleyball programs. Only Indiana State University has been recognized annually for a longer period of time having been honored for 22 consecutive years. The program's 21 total awards is the third-most in Division I, behind just Indiana State and Morehead State. The AVCA began the award for the 1992-93 season.Â
