Fleming scores 21; BGSU forces 25 Rocket turnovers
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team led from wire to wire on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 16), as the Falcons posted a 69-57 road win over the University of Toledo in Mid-American Conference action at Savage Arena.
Freshman Lexi Fleming led the Falcons (9-3, 5-2 MAC) and tied for game honors with 21 points, while junior Kadie Hempfling added 11 points.
BGSU forced the Rockets (7-4, 3-4 MAC) into 25 turnovers, and the Falcons had a 29-19 advantage in points off turnovers, including a 21-7 lead in that category in the first half.
The Falcons had a total of 15 steals on the day, with four players recording three or more.
Freshman Kenzie Lewis had 15 rebounds, the highest total of her young career, and was one of seven BGSU players to score at least five points.
A trio of Falcons – seniors Madisen Parker and Angela Perry and sophomore Elissa Brett – had eight points apiece, with Lewis adding six and freshman Nyla Hampton five.
BGSU, as mentioned, never trailed, and the Falcons led by a game-high 21 points with under three minutes to go, before a late UT surge cut the final margin to 12 points.
Â
NOTE OF THE DAY
• With the win over Toledo, the Falcons are now 5-2 in Mid-American Conference action this season. BGSU has matched the MAC win total for the previous two years combined.
• The Falcons went 3-15 in league games last season after going 2-16 the previous year.
• BGSU has not won more than five MAC games in a season since the 2015-16 team went 6-12.
BONUS NOTE OF THE DAY
• Prior to this season, the Falcons had posted a total of eight MAC road wins in the last six years. A total of three of those eight wins came by double digits.
• Saturday's win over Toledo marked BGSU's third MAC road win, all by 12 points or more, in the last two weeks.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I'm really proud of our team effort today. I thought we really set the tone defensively from the opening tip. I told the team after the game that I'm proud of them for a million reasons, but I'm really proud of the kids who have stuck with us; the kids that have been here for three years and have chosen to stay at Bowling Green and continue to build this program. That win was just one moment, and just a small reward, but those kids are a huge part of us having an opportunity to have success today. "
FIRST QUARTER
• In a harbinger of things to come, freshman Lexi Fleming took a charge from a Toledo player on the Rockets' second possession of the day. Then, classmate Kenzie Lewis found sophomore Elissa Brett for a three-point field goal to open the game's scoring. Brett, in turn, would spot freshman Nyla Hampton for a three-ball and a 6-0 lead, prompting the Rockets to take a timeout with just 2:15 gone.
• The Rockets went five possessions without scoring, before getting a putback on possession number six, but a Fleming steal resulted in a transition layup for Hampton and an 8-2 lead.
• Brett knocked down another three-pointer midway through the period, and senior Madisen Parker hit a trailing Kadie Hempfling for another long-range shot, giving the Orange and Brown a 14-8 lead. BG went 4-for-4 from the arc to begin the game.
• The Rockets battled back, however, with Quinesha Lockett's three-pointer bring the home team within a single point, at 14-13. After a Fleming steal, senior Angela Perry took a pass from freshman Kenzie Lewis for a layup, and another Fleming steal resulted in a pair of Parker free throws. Then, Hempfling lobbed the ball inside to Perry for a hoop, giving the Falcons a 6-0 run to end the quarter and a 20-13 lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Sophia Wiard opened the scoring in the second period for the Rockets, but a Fleming steal led to a basket by senior Clare Glowniak, and off of that basket, Hampton stole the ball, leading to a run-out bucket from Hempfling. And, Fleming came up with a steal and an and-one layup. When she hit the ensuing free throw at the 7:59 mark, the Falcons had scored seven points in approximately 35 seconds, and BGSU had a 27-15 lead.
• Hempfling knocked down a pair of free throws, but BG then went scoreless for over three minutes, allowing the Rockets to cut the Falcons' lead to seven points. But, Fleming found Parker for a triple, drew a UT charge at the other end, then drew yet another Rocket foul and made both charity tosses for a 34-23 lead.
• Fleming was fouled while grabbing a defensive rebound, sinking two more shots from the stripe, and Glowniak's hustle to earn a jump ball gave BG possession soon after. Fleming was fouled just after the ensuing inbounds pass and made another foul shot, and Parker drained a corner three in the final minute, giving the Falcons a 16-point lead, the largest of the game at that juncture. BG took that 41-25 advantage into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER
• The Falcons struggled from the field in the third quarter, going just 3-for-16 in that 10-minute stretch. But, thanks in part to the BG defense, the Rockets were only able to shave five points off of the halftime deficit during that period.
• Sammi Mikonowicz converted a three-point play as part of a 7-0 run for the Rockets to begin the quarter, but Hempfling stopped that run with a layup as the shot clock wound down, and Fleming's layup followed soon after. Lockett hit a jumper, but Fleming came right back with a step-through move and a bucket. BG led, 47-34.
• For the Falcons, however, those three field goals – coming in a span of 1:05 – were the only three shots BG would make from the floor during the entire quarter. Lockett made an open layup, and Wiard got a friendly roll as her jumper bounced around and in. The hosts had cut the BG lead to seven points.
• After going nearly six minutes without a point, however, the Falcons scored four points in the final 29.9 seconds of the quarter. After a Hempfling steal, Fleming was fouled in transition and made both shots. UT missed an open layup attempt, and Hempfling lobbed the ball inside to Perry who was fouled and converted both tosses with 4.1 seconds on the clock for a 51-40 BG lead.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Hempfling opened the fourth-period scoring, and after a Lockett hoop, the junior lobbed the ball in to Perry for a layup that began a quick 6-0 run. Lewis hit two free throws, then Fleming drove into the paint and hit a cutting Lewis with a nifty pass, resulting in a layup and a 17-point lead, 59-42.
• Five-straight points by the hosts cut the lead to 12, but after a Mikonowicz three-pointer, Fleming immediately responded with a long-range make off of a Brett feed. Fleming returned the favor, finding Brett ahead of the pack for an easy layup, and when Fleming scored four-straight points at the free-throw line, BG's lead was a game-high 21 points, 68-47, with 3:38 to go.
• The lead remained 21 points with under three minutes remaining, before UT ended the game on a 10-1 run to cut the final margin to 12 points.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• BGSU now leads Toledo, 43-37, in the all-time series between the teams. The Falcons lead the series with each of the other 11 MAC schools.
