Cullen, Fleming Named Medical Mutual Athletes Of The Week
January 18, 2021 | General, Ice Hockey, Women's Basketball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Medical Mutual Athletes of the Week, as selected by the strategic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Will Cullen and women's basketball player Lexi Fleming.
Male Athlete of the Week
Will Cullen, a junior from Pelham Manor, N.Y., paced the Falcons in points over the weekend, totaling five in the sweep over Northern Michigan. Cullen assisted on the game-winner in both contests while also scoring the Orange and Brown's final goal of each game. In the first game of the series he had just the goal and the assist. As for the second game, he added another assist to his line for a three-point outing. The five-point weekend gives Cullen 16 points on the season, tying his career-high for a single season while also being the most points by a defenseman in the nation so far this year.Â
Female Athlete of the Week
Lexi Fleming, a freshman from Cincinnati, Ohio, continues to state her case as one of the top freshmen in the country. Fleming averaged 19.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals in a pair of road games last week. On Saturday, she led the Falcons in scoring for the 10th time in 12 games this season, scoring 21 points as BGSU won at Toledo, 69-57. Fleming also led BG with four assists, and had a game-high five steals in the win over the arch rivals, and she was 12-of-13 at the free-throw line. Fleming had 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists in BG's midweek game at Buffalo, getting to the stripe nine times and making eight.
