BGSU shoots 60% over the final three quarters to improve to 9-2 in the MAC
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team shot 60 percent from the field over the final three quarters Saturday afternoon (Jan. 30), en route to a 76-59 win over the University of Toledo. The Mid-American Conference game, the latest edition of the 'Battle of I-75,' was held inside the Stroh Center.
With the win, the Falcons (13-3, 9-2 MAC) have won five consecutive games, and BGSU completed a sweep of the season series with the Rockets (8-7, 4-7 MAC).
The Falcons shot over 50% from the floor for the third consecutive game. After hitting just 5-of-18 shots in the first quarter, BGSU made 27-of-45 shots from the field (60.0%) over the last three periods.
Senior Angela Perry was 9-of-15 from the field, including a 7-for-9 second-half performance, en route to a game-high 18 points, while sophomore Elissa Brett and freshman Lexi Fleming had 13 apiece.
Perry scored her 18 points in just over 14 minutes of action.
Brett added seven rebounds, good for second on the team behind freshman Kenzie Lewis's game-high 10 boards. Freshman Nyla Hampton had nine points and left it all on the floor Saturday, with a game-high five steals as BG picked up 11 as a team.
Senior Clare Glowniak had eight points on Saturday, as she and fellow senior post player Perry combined to go 13-of-23 from the field. The Falcons had a 48-24 lead in points in the paint on the day.
The Falcons trailed by one point after 10 minutes but – with Fleming on the bench for the entire second period after picking up two first-quarter fouls – outscored the Rockets by a 24-9 count in the second quarter to take a 14-point halftime lead.
UT got back within nine early in the third quarter, but back-to-back buckets by Fleming put the lead back into double digits for good, and the Falcons led by as many as 25 points in the latter stages of the fourth quarter.
Just over halfway through the MAC schedule, BGSU has tripled the conference win total from a year ago.
Quinesha Lockett was the lone Rocket in double figures in the scoring column, with 17 points on the afternoon.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• Several statistics that have gone in BGSU's favor in nearly every game this year again favored the Falcons on Saturday. BG forced the Rockets into 21 turnovers, while committing just eight themselves. The Falcons had a 24-5 advantage in points off turnovers against UT.
• BGSU has had the lead in points off turnovers in 15 of this year's 16 games. And, the Falcons – after recording 10 or more steals a total of five times last year – have had a double-digit steal total in each of the last five games (all wins), in eight of the last nine contests and in 11 of this season's 16 games.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I'm just so proud of our team's balanced effort today. We had a lot of kids step up, whether it was defensively or scoring."
"I have a lot of respect for Toledo, and I have a lot of respect for Coach Cullop. To be able to sweep our rival feels awesome, and I'm so proud of our team."
"I felt like we got better as the game went on, and I'm really proud that so many kids stepped up and impacted the game."
FIRST QUARTER
• Sophomore Elissa Brett got the Falcons on the board, opening the game's scoring with a three-pointer at the 8:23 mark, and the Adelaide, Australia, native hit a reverse layup to give her BG's first five points. UT answered Brett's buckets with a Sophia Wiard three-ball and a Quinesha Lockett layup.
• Freshman Lexi Fleming took a pass from junior Kadie Hempfling and knocked down a straightaway trey, and Fleming's spinning jumper gave the Falcons a 10-7 lead halfway through the quarter.
• But, the scoring slowed for both teams, and after senior Clare Glowniak backed her defender down for a bucket and a 14-10 lead, UT scored the final five points of the period. Khera Goss hit a quick layup, and Mali Morgan-Elliott scored three points at the free-throw line. Her first trip to the stripe, with 56.4 seconds left in the period, came after she had drawn Fleming's second foul of the quarter. UT led, 15-14, after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Fleming, who scored seven of BG's 14 first-quarter points, sat out the entire second period due to the two fouls. But, with their leading scorer on the bench, the Falcons outscored UT by a 24-9 count.
• Hempfling drove for a layup just eight seconds into the quarter, but Goss answered with a bucket. Freshman Nyla Hampton stole the ball and hit a turnaround floater on the break, and after Lockett hit a layup, Brett took a Hempfling pass and drained a three-pointer to give the Falcons the lead for good.
• Brett's triple, which came just under two minutes into the quarter, began a 10-0 run for the Falcons. Hempfling, who had assisted Brett on that trey, took a Brett pass and drilled a three-pointer from out top for a 24-19 lead. The BG defense forced the Rockets into a shot-clock violation – one of three on the day for the visitors – and senior Angela Perry's floating one-hander gave the hosts a seven-point lead. When Hampton stole the ball and hit a floater, the Falcons had a 28-19 advantage midway through the quarter.
• UT ended the BG run with a pair of Lexi Lance free throws, but some nifty Hempfling-to-Hampton-to-Perry passing resulted in an open layup for the senior, and Glowniak found a cutting Brett for a bucket that gave the Falcons a double-digit lead, 32-21, with three minutes left in the period.
• UT had gone over six minutes (6:20) without making a field goal, but a Sammi Mikonowicz three-pointer cut the BG lead to 10 points. But, Glowniak found a cutting Olivia Trice, and the sophomore's layup was followed by a Hampton steal and score. BGSU led, 38-24, at the break.
• The Falcons shot 68.8% from the field, going 11-for-16 including a perfect 2-for-2 effort from the arc.
• BGSU took twice as many shots as the Rockets, who went 3-of-8, in the quarter.
THIRD QUARTER
• The Rockets scored the first five points of the quarter to cut the BG lead to single digits, but Fleming made a reverse layup after a baseline drive, and the freshman then hit a transition layup after a Brett steal. Back-to-back layups by Perry, with the second coming after a nice look by freshman Kenzie Lewis, gave BG a 46-29 lead and prompted a Toledo timeout.
• Mikonowicz scored the game's next four points, but Perry took a Hampton pass and scored inside, and an impressive pass by Fleming resulted in Perry's fourth bucket of the quarter.
• Hampton found Glowniak, who worked her way inside for a bucket, and Hampton then went coast-to-coast for an and-one layup, with the free throw giving the Brown and Orange a 55-33 lead with 1:37 left in the quarter.
• The teams traded points over the remainder of the period, with Glowniak converting again for the home team. Fleming was fouled on a jumper with just 1.1 seconds left, and the freshman hit both free-throw tries for a 59-38 lead after 30 minutes.
• The Falcons went 9-of-10 from the field to end the third period.
FOURTH QUARTER
• The Rockets looked to get back into the game in the fourth quarter, but could not pull any closer than the final 17-point margin. Perry kicked the ball out to Brett for a three-pointer, and Lewis fed Perry for a turnaround layup and a 64-41 lead just over a minute in.
• That layup was the first of six-straight BG points for the senior, who capped that stretch with another hoop in the paint that made it a 68-44 game. Lockett scored five consecutive points to get UT within 19, but Hempfling found senior Madisen Parker for a three-ball and a 71-49 advantage with six minutes to go.
• Hempfling's driving layup made the score 73-49, and a Trice triple gave the Falcons a 25-point lead, the largest of the game, with 2:42 to go. UT scored the game's final eight points against the BG bench.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• The Falcons shot 50.8 percent from the floor in the win, going 32-of-63. UT shot 36.8% (21-of-57) on the day.
• UT was 8-of-30 from three-point range, but BG had a 41.2% success rate from the arc compared to the Rockets' 26.7% result. The Falcons were 7-of-17 from long distance.
• Angela Perry, as mentioned, scored 18 points in just over 14 minutes of game time, while Elissa Brett and Lexi Fleming had 13 points each.
• Brett went 5-for-6 from the field and added seven rebounds, while Nyla Hampton was 4-of-5 from the floor on the day. Hampton had nine points, three assists and a game-high five steals.
• Kenzie Lewis took just one shot on the day, but led all players with 10 rebounds and added three assists and a blocked shot.
• Kadie Hempfling had three assists as well, along with seven points, five boards and a pair of steals.
• After shooting just 5-for-18 in the first quarter, BGSU made 6-of-8 shots in the first five minutes of the second period. In the third quarter, BG hit nine of the final 10 shots.
• BGSU had advantages in points off turnovers (24-5), points in the paint (48-24) and bench scoring (34-12). The Rockets committed 21 turnovers compared to just eight for the Falcons.
UP NEXT
• BGSU begins February with a Wednesday (Feb. 3) game at Northern Illinois. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. locally (7:00 p.m. ET) in DeKalb.
• Then, the Falcons will return home to face Ohio next Saturday (Feb. 6), in a noon start at the Stroh.
