Defending MAC Regular-Season Champions Open '21-22 Season on Nov. 11
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team officially began preparations for the 2021-22 season on Thursday afternoon (Sept. 30), holding the first official practice inside the Stroh Center. Head coach Robyn Fralick and the defending Mid-American Conference regular-season champions open the '21-22 campaign on Nov. 11 with a home game vs. East Tennessee State.
"I love the first official practice day," said Fralick, the reigning MAC Coach of the Year. "There's an enthusiasm and an energy around this day. This is a step in our journey, and the trick is to keep that enthusiasm and energy. We want to maintain that, and be consistent with that all throughout the season."
Fralick and the Falcons welcome back 10 letterwinners, including all five starters, from last season's team. The 2020-21 Falcons, picked to finish 11th in the 12-team MAC in the preseason coaches' poll, went 21-8 overall, and finished 14-4 in league play to win the conference regular-season title. BGSU advanced to national postseason play for the first time in seven years, participating in the WNIT.
Â
The Falcons were tied for second in the nation on the NCAA's list of top Division-I turnarounds from 2019-20 to '20-21. Fralick and the Falcons posted a 12-game improvement over the previous season.
"Last year, I feel like our team practiced like they were tired of losing, and I don't want that to change," said Fralick. "I think the minute you feel like you've arrived, you're in a bad spot. We need to keep that chip on our shoulder. I feel like this group has another level they can get to, and our staff needs to continue to push them toward that level. They've been a very motivated, a very eager, and a very fun group to coach."
BG's top-five scorers are back from a year ago, including All-MAC performers Lexi Fleming and Kadie Hempfling. Fleming, a sophomore, was named the MAC Freshman of the Year after averaging a team-high 15.9 points per game, and she also was chosen to the All-MAC Second Team. Fleming's total of 67 steals was the highest by a freshman in BGSU history.
Hempfling, a senior, earned all-league third-team honors a year ago after averaging 12.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest. She ranked among the top-three players on the team in scoring, rebounding and assists (3.0 apg), and led the Falcons in plus/minus ratio.
Junior Elissa Brett rounds out BG's returning double-digit scorers. Brett averaged 12.0 ppg and led the Falcons in rebounding (6.7 rpg). She led the Orange and Brown in scoring at tournament time, averaging 13.8 ppg in BG's six tournament games (three MAC Tournament and three WNIT contests).
Sophomore Nyla Hampton and fifth-year Falcon Madisen Parker scored 9.3 and 7.4 ppg, respectively, last season. Hampton joined Fleming on the MAC's All-Freshman Team, and also was chosen to the MAC All-Defensive Team. She was second on the Falcons in both assists (2.8) and steals (2.3) per game, and shot 63 percent from the field in BG's three WNIT games in Rockford.
Parker, after leading the entire nation in three-point field-goal percentage two years ago, finished 11th in the country last season. She shot 45.0% from the arc, making a team-high 58 long-range attempts, and is fifth in BGSU history with a total of 201 career three-pointers made.
Sophomore Kenzie Lewis was one of just two Falcons to start all 29 games last year, joining Hempfling in that category. Lewis averaged 4.9 ppg despite attempting fewer than three shots per contest, and led the team in assists (3.1 apg) while ranking second in both rebounds (6.1) and steals (2.0)
Redshirt junior Molly Dever and sophomores Jasmine Clerkley, Sophie Dziekan and Olivia Hill round out the Falcons' returnees.
Fralick and the Falcons welcome four newcomers (all Ohio natives) to this year's roster, including redshirt sophomore Morgan Sharps (Granville, Ohio), a transfer from Xavier. BG's trio of freshmen include Zoe Miller (Berlin, Ohio), Jocelyn Tate (Pickerington, Ohio) and Amy Velasco (Centerville, Ohio).

CAPTAINS
Fralick recently announced the team's captains for the 2021-22 campaign. That quartet includes Molly Dever, Lexi Fleming, Kadie Hempfling and Madisen Parker.
"As we went through the process (of naming captains), it was clear that those four are really admired by their teammates," said the head coach. "I love that they are a very complementary group; they really bring different strengths. Together, they really have a good pulse on the team."
The Falcons open the regular season with back-to-back home games, taking on East Tennessee State (Nov. 11) and IUPUI (Nov. 14). The non-conference schedule also includes home games vs. Valparaiso (Dec. 5) and Notre Dame College (Dec. 12), as well as a game at Ohio State (Nov. 17) and trips to Annapolis, Md., and Las Vegas, Nev., for two games apiece.
BGSU will face George Mason (Nov. 27) and Liberty (Nov. 28) in the Navy Classic just after Thanksgiving, and will meet Campbell (Dec. 20) and UT Martin (Dec. 21) in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic just before Christmas.
The Falcons will begin defense of the MAC regular-season title on Dec. 29, opening the conference schedule at Eastern Michigan on Dec. 29. The home portion of the league slate begins on New Year's Day, when Ball State comes to the Stroh Center.
