Jaguars pick up 71-60 win on Sunday at the Stroh
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – In just the second game of their respective collegiate careers, freshmen Zoe Miller and Amy Velasco scored 15 points each, but it was not enough as the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team fell, 71-60, to IUPUI on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 14). The non-conference matchup was held at the Stroh Center.
Three-time Horizon League Player of the Year Macee Williams had game-high totals of 23 points and seven rebounds to lead three double-digit scorers for the Jaguars (1-1). Rachel Kent and Madison Wise each added 13 points for the visitors.
The Falcons (1-0) got a total of 42 points from the team's four newcomers. In addition to Miller and Velasco, Morgan Sharps and Jocelyn Tate added eight and four points, respectively, off the bench.
Sophomore Nyla Hampton had seven points, and led the Falcons with five assists and four steals on DC vs. Marvel Day at the Stroh.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"We turned the ball over a lot in the first half, and I thought they scored fast and easy off of that. I thought we settled in in the second half, both defensively and in taking care of the ball, but a lot of credit to IUPUI. They are one of the top mid-majors in the country right now. This was a great test for us early in the year. We're going to get a lot of feedback from this game that will really help us moving forward."
(On the play of Miller and Velasco)
"They were fearless, they were really aggressive and they made a lot happen. They're good players. It's their second college game, and Zoe's guarding a three-time player of the year from the Horizon League, and she battled. She really did. And, Amy was very aggressive tonight, which I love to see. She made a lot happen, not only for herself, but for her teammates. We're going to see our team continue to develop as we go."Â
FIRST QUARTER
• The Jaguars, who took #11 Michigan to overtime in their season opener, never trailed in Sunday's contest. IUPUI scored on the first two possessions, and after buckets by Miller and Hampton tied the score, the visitors got a Kent three-pointer and a Wise jumper.
• BGSU answered with a Velasco three-ball, and Miller's layup at the 6:43 mark got the Falcons within 11-9, but the Jags responded with a 10-2 run.
• Another Miller layup got the Orange and Brown within six points, 21-15, but Anna Mortag answered with a three-pointer, and after Velasco hit a floater, Williams scored inside to give IUPUI a 26-17 lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Velasco and fellow freshman Jocelyn Tate each scored in the paint in the early moments of the second period, but IUPUI seemingly had an answer for each BG bucket. After Tate's layup, four-straight points gave the visitors a 33-21 advantage.
• But, Hampton fed Kadie Hempfling for a bucket, then made a nifty pass to Miller for a layup, prompting an IUPUI timeout. Moments later, Hempfling drove and dished the ball to Hampton for a three-pointer from the left side, cutting the IUPUI lead to 33-28.
• A pair of Madisen Parker free throws made it a five-point game once again, with just over two minutes left in the half, but the Jags ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 42-30 lead into the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• Miller converted a three-point play early in the second half, but Williams answered with a bucket inside to start a 7-0 run. The visitors extended the lead to 21 points on another Williams hoop later in the quarter.
• Velasco's nifty driving layup late in the period was followed by a Sharps three-pointer in the final minute of the quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
• BG began the quarter on a 6-0 run, with Miller and Velasco combining for all six points.
• Velasco hit another nifty driving layup early in the period, but once again, the Jags had a quick answer in the form of a hoop at the other end. IUPUI extended the lead back out to 20 points on a Rachel McLimore layup
• Tate converted a jumper, and Hampton picked McLimore's pocket at midcourt and used a nifty behind-the-back dribble to shake a defender en route to a layup.
• After a Jasmine Clerkley hoop, three-pointers by Hempfling and Sharps narrowed the deficit, but the Falcons could not come all the way back.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERSÂ
• IUPUI shot 46.7 percent from the field for the game, while the Falcons went 41.7% from the floor. The visitors were 7-of-22 from the three-point line to BG's 5-for-26 effort.
• Both teams shot just over 57% in the first quarter, with IUPUI going 11-for-19 (57.9%) to BGSU's 8-for-14 (57.1%). But, the Jags turned the ball over just once in the quarter, compared to six times for the Falcons.
