• The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team begins the road portion of the 2021-22 schedule with a midweek matchup in the state capital. • Wednesday's game is the Falcons' third contest in a seven-day span.
THE OPENING TIP
• The Falcons are off to a 1-1 start to the season. BGSU posted a 32-point win over East Tennessee State on Thursday (Nov. 11) before dropping a 71-60 decision against Horizon League favorite IUPUI three days later.
• Head coach Robyn Fralick, in her fourth season at the helm of the Falcons, returned 10 players off of last year's BGSU roster.
• The Falcons, after going 10-21 overall and 3-15 in the MAC two years ago, were picked to finish 11th in the 12-team league in 2020-21, according to the preseason coaches' poll. BG proceeded to post a 14-4 MAC record to win the regular-season crown. Then, the Orange and Brown defeated Eastern Michigan and Buffalo in the MAC Tournament in Cleveland, before falling to Central Michigan in the championship game.
• BGSU advanced to the WNIT, and the Falcons finished with an overall record of 21-8. BG tied for the second-best turnaround in the nation, with an improvement of +12.0 games.

MARVEL-OUS
• Sunday's game promotion at the Stroh Center was 'Marvel vs. DC Day,' and although the Falcons suffered a 71-60 loss to IUPUI, fans can 'Marvel' at the impressive streak that came to an end that day (and yes, we know this is a stretch).
• The 11-point loss marked the first time BGSU had fallen by that many points since the final game of the 2019-20 season (an 84-67 loss at Western Michigan in the MAC Tournament's first round).
• In fact, BGSU did not lose a single game by more than eight points in the first 28 games last season, before dropping a 10-point decision to Drake in the season's final contest, in WNIT action in Rockford, Ill.
• BG lost 14 games by double-digit scores in 2017-18, 12 in '18-19 and nine in '19-20 before suffering just the one 10-point loss last winter.
GOOD START
• The Falcons got the 2021-22 season off to a successful start, scoring the first seven points of the game en route to a 90-58 win over East Tennessee State last Thursday (Nov. 11). Kadie Hempfling had 20 points – and went 6-for-7 from three-point range – to pace five double-digit scorers, while Nyla Hampton scored 10 of her 15 points in the first quarter to stake the Falcons to an early lead.
GOOD START II
• Two Falcon freshmen were in the starting lineup to begin their respective collegiate careers. Both Zoe Miller and Amy Velasco were in the starting five for both the ETSU game on Thursday night and the IUPUI matchup on Sunday.
• Miller had 13 points and six rebounds in her debut, while Velasco scored six points and dished out five assists. Both players scored 15 points vs. the Jaguars.
WELCOME!
• BGSU's four newcomers all saw action last Thursday, combining for 40 points and 23 rebounds vs. ETSU. In addition to Miller and Velasco (see the previous note), Morgan Sharps had 11 points and six boards, while Jocelyn Tate scored 10 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
• Then, against IUPUI, that quartet combined for 42 of the Falcons' 60 points, as Sharps had eight points and Tate four.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
• Have we mentioned that BGSU won 21 total games and the MAC regular-season title in 2020-21? We have? Well they did.
• A total of 10 letterwinners from that club, including all five starters, are on the roster in 2021-22. BG's top-five scorers are back from a year ago, including All-MAC performers Lexi Fleming and Kadie Hempfling. Fleming, a sophomore, was named the MAC Freshman of the Year after averaging a team-high 15.9 points per game, and she also was chosen to the All-MAC Second Team. Fleming's total of 67 steals was the highest by a freshman in BGSU history.
• Fleming recently suffered an injury, however, and will miss the 2021-22 season.
• Hempfling, a senior, earned all-league third-team honors a year ago after averaging 12.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest. She ranked among the top-three players on the team in scoring, rebounding and assists (3.0 apg), and led the Falcons in plus/minus ratio.
• Junior Elissa Brett rounds out BG's returning double-digit scorers. Brett averaged 12.0 ppg and led the Falcons in rebounding (6.7 rpg). She led the Orange and Brown in scoring at tournament time, averaging 13.8 ppg in BG's six tournament games (three MAC Tournament and three WNIT contests).
• Sophomore Nyla Hampton and fifth-year Falcon Madisen Parker scored 9.3 and 7.4 ppg, respectively, last season. Hampton joined Fleming on the MAC's All-Freshman Team, and also was chosen to the MAC All-Defensive Team. She was second on the Falcons in both assists (2.8) and steals (2.3) per game, and shot 63 percent from the field in BG's three WNIT games.
• Parker, after leading the entire nation in three-point field-goal percentage two years ago, finished 11th in the country last season. She shot 45.0% from the arc, making a team-high 58 long-range attempts, and is fifth in BGSU history with a total of 201 career three-pointers made.
• Sophomore Kenzie Lewis was one of just two Falcons to start all 29 games last year, joining Hempfling in that category. Lewis averaged 4.9 ppg despite attempting fewer than three shots per contest, and led the team in assists (3.1 apg) while ranking second in both rebounds (6.1) and steals (2.0)
• Redshirt junior Molly Dever and sophomores Jasmine Clerkley, Sophie Dziekan and Olivia Hill round out the Falcons' returnees.
• Fralick and the Falcons welcome four newcomers (all Ohio natives) to this year's roster, including redshirt sophomore Morgan Sharps (Granville, Ohio), a transfer from Xavier. BG's trio of freshmen include Zoe Miller (Berlin, Ohio), Jocelyn Tate (Pickerington, Ohio) and Amy Velasco (Centerville, Ohio).
• Through two games, Miller leads a balanced scoring attack with 14.0 ppg. She is one of five players averaging at least 9.5 points per outing. hempfling has 12.5 ppg, with Hampton at 11.0, Velasco 10.5 and Sharps at 9.5 points per outing.
• Tate has 7.0 ppg and a team-leading 7.0 rebounds per game. Hampton leads the Falcons in both assists (4.0 apg) and steals (4.5 spg).
HOME COOKIN'
• The Falcons had a 10-2 record at the Stroh Center last season, and BGSU was 8-2 in MAC games at home. Both victory totals are the program's highest since 2013-14, when the Falcons were 16-1 overall and a perfect 9-0 in MAC games at the Stroh.
• The Falcons went 2-7 in MAC home games in each of the prior three years. Last season, BG's second home conference win came on Dec. 22. BGSU recorded a winning home record, both overall and in MAC games, for the first time since '13-14.
• BGSU's total of eight MAC wins at the Stroh last season surpassed the total for the previous four years combined (1-8 in 2016-17, 2-7 in each of the next three years).
ROAD WARRIORS?
• The Falcons clinched the 2020-21 MAC regular-season title with a win at Akron on Feb. 27, 2021. That victory gave BGSU a record of 8-3 on the road, including 6-2 in MAC road games.
• BG more than doubled the program's road win total for all of the 2019-20 season (3-12), and the Falcons surpassed the total (five) for each of the prior two seasons combined. The Falcons went 2-13 on the road in 2018-19.
• The Falcons won four road games in 2017-18, going 4-11. Last year's total of eight road wins was the program's highest since the '13-14 club went 11-2 away from home.
• In fact, after going 8-1 in MAC road games in that '13-14 season, BG posted league road marks of: 0-9, 3-6, 3-6 again, 1-8, 0-9 and 1-8. With a 6-2 mark, the 2020-21 Falcons surpassed the MAC road win total for the previous four seasons combined.
• Prior to the 2020-21 season, the Falcons had won three MAC road games by 10 points or more in the last six years. Last season, BGSU posted four double-digit MAC road victories in the month of January alone.
• BGSU rang in the New Year with a 34-point win at Ball State – the program's most lopsided MAC road win in nine seasons – in the MAC road opener (Jan. 2), and followed that up with a 25-point victory at Western Michigan four days later. The Falcons also topped Toledo by 12 and Miami by 35 on the road in January.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE BUCKEYES
• Ohio State is 2-0 on the young season, and the Buckeyes are ranked 21st in the nation in this week's Associated Press poll. OSU picked up a pair of home wins last week, downing Bucknell (71-48) and Norfolk State (86-48) by a combined 61 points.
Jacy Sheldon has 15.0 ppg to pace three double-digit scorers.
• Head coach Kevin McGuff's team was picked to finish fifth in the Big Ten Conference this season. McGuff welcomed back 10 players from last year's team that finished 13-7 overall and 9-7 in Big Ten play.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons trail Ohio State, 14-2, in the all-time series, but BG won the most recent meeting, posting a 64-52 road win just under eight years ago (Nov. 24, 2013) in Columbus. Prior to that, the Buckeyes had won 12-straight meetings since BG's only other series win back in 1975. The Falcons are 1-2 at home, 1-7 on the road and 0-5 in neutral-site matches over the years.
DOWN THE ROAD
• BGSU, after beginning the season with three games in a seven-day span, then will have a week and a half between games before playing two contests in the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Md. The Falcons will face George Mason on Nov 27, before meeting Liberty the following afternoon.
• Then, BGSU will return home to face Valparaiso (Dec. 5) and Notre Dame College (Dec. 12) on back-to-back Sundays.
• Wednesday's game is the Falcons' third contest in a seven-day span.
