THE OPENING TIP
• The Falcons are off to a 1-2 start to the season, and BGSU is looking to snap a two-game losing streak. BG posted a 32-point win over East Tennessee State in the season opener (Nov. 11) before dropping a 71-60 decision against Horizon League favorite IUPUI (Nov. 14) and a 94-63 result on the road against #21/25 Ohio State (Nov. 17)..
• Head coach Robyn Fralick, in her fourth season at the helm of the Falcons, returned 10 players off of last year's BGSU roster.
• The Falcons, after going 10-21 overall and 3-15 in the MAC two years ago, were picked to finish 11th in the 12-team league in 2020-21, according to the preseason coaches' poll. BG proceeded to post a 14-4 MAC record to win the regular-season crown. Then, the Orange and Brown defeated Eastern Michigan and Buffalo in the MAC Tournament in Cleveland, before falling to Central Michigan in the championship game.
• BGSU advanced to the WNIT, and the Falcons finished with an overall record of 21-8. BG tied for the second-best turnaround in the nation, with an improvement of +12.0 games.
• This season, the Falcons were picked to finish second in the MAC in the preseason coaches' poll.
• George Mason will take a 3-3 record into the BGSU game on Saturday. Liberty enters the weekend with a 3-1 mark, including a win over MAC preseason favorite Ohio. The Lady Flames will face Navy Saturday before meeting BG on Sunday.
THREE-MENDOUS
• It's early in the season, to be sure, but just like the 2020-21 team, the '21-22 Falcons seem to have a knack for hitting shots from beyond the arc.
• Last season, BGSU made 8.1 three-point field goals per game, ranking 41st in the nation, and the Falcons were 34th in the country with a long-range success rate of 35.6%.
• Through three games this season, the Falcons have made 9.0 triples per game, ranking 27th in the nation. And, BG is shooting 37.0% from the arc, good for 57th in the country.
• Morgan Sharps is shooting an even 50% from three-point range, having gone 8-for-16 in the early going. Kadie Hempfling and Madisen Parker are shooting 47.1% and 45.5%, respectively, from downtown.
GOOD START
• Two Falcon freshmen were in the starting lineup to begin their respective collegiate careers. Both Zoe Miller and Amy Velasco have been in the starting five for each of BGSU's first three games..
• Miller had 13 points and six rebounds in her debut, vs. ETSU, while Velasco scored six points and dished out five assists. Both players scored 15 points vs. the IUPUI three days later.
WELCOME!
• BGSU's four newcomers combined for 40 points and 23 rebounds in the season opener vs. ETSU. In addition to Miller and Velasco (see the previous note), Morgan Sharps had 11 points and six boards, while Jocelyn Tate scored 10 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
• Then, against IUPUI, that quartet combined for 42 of the Falcons' 60 points, as Sharps had eight points and Tate four. And, that group had a combined 41 of BG's 63 points at Ohio State.
• Sharps went off for a game- and BG season-high 21 points vs. the nationally-ranked Buckeyes, while Miller hit double figures for the third time in as many collegiate contests, scoring 12 points.
KATE ACHTER. KADIE HEMPFLING. THAT'S IT. THAT'S THE LIST.
• In the first five decades (give or take) of BGSU women's basketball, only one player had amassed both 500 rebounds and 300 assists in her career. Now, there are two.
• Kate Achter had been the only player to achieve both of those milestones. After only two and one-half seasons in a BG uniform, though, junior Kadie Hempfling joined Achter on that list. Hempfling reached both the 500-rebound and 300-assist milestones in January of 2021. Entering the Navy Classic, she now has 636 boards and 371 dimes.
• Achter (2004-08), a member of the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame, had a school-record 688 assists and exactly 500 rebounds in her storied Falcon career.
KADIE HEMPFLING. THAT'S IT. THAT'S THE LIST.
• Junior Kadie Hempfling's final rebound of the Falcons' win over Buffalo in the MAC Tournament was the 600th of her career. She is the only player in school history to have grabbed 600 boards and dished out 300 assists.
• Hempfling currently ranks eighth on the BGSU career assists list.
MADIS3N PARK3R
• Madisen Parker went 2-for-3 from three-point range vs. Ohio State. Parker now has made 206 long-distance shots, and sits in fifth place on the BGSU career list for three-pointers made.
• Parker is 10 triples behind fourth-place Liz Honegger (216 treys from 2003-07). The legendary Lauren Prochaska holds the school record with 310 triples during her Falcon tenure (2007-11).
CAPTAINS
• Molly Dever, Lexi Fleming, Kadie Hempfling and Madisen Parker are the captains of the 2021-22 Falcons. "As we went through the process (of naming captains), it was clear that those four are really admired by their teammates," said Robyn Fralick. "I love that they are a very complementary group; they really bring different strengths. Together, they really have a good pulse on the team."
A QUICK LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS
• George Mason enters weekend action with a 3-3 record, and the Patriots have already matched last season's win total. All three GMU wins have come on the road, agaisnt FIU, Loyola (Md.) and Charleston Southern, but the Patriots are looking to snap a two-game losing streak. Most recently, Mason dropped a 69-61 decision to American on Tuesday night.
• Amaya Scott leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, with 15.5 ppg and 7.0 rpg, while Jordan Wakefield has scored 12..5 points per game to date. Head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis, in her first season with the Patriots, has nine returning letterwinners, including four starters, from last year's team. The 2020-21 club went 3-19 overall and 0-14 in Atlantic 10 Conference play.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons are meeting both George Mason and Liberty for the first time this weekend. BGSU is 22-16 against current members of the Atlantic 10 Conference, and the Falcons have an all-time record of 8-5 vs. current ASUN schools.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the Navy Classic, the Falcons will return home for the next two games. BGSU will face Valparaiso (Dec. 5) and Notre Dame College (Dec. 12) on back-to-back Sundays at the Stroh Center, with each contest set for a 2:00 p.m. tip..
