Junior defender earns prestigious honor from CoSIDA
Bowling Green State University men's soccer standout Michael Montemurri has earned a prestigious national honor. Montemurri has been named to the 2021 Academic All-America® Team, selected by CoSIDA.
Montemurri, a junior, was named to the Academic All-America® Third Team. He is the first men's soccer Falcon to earn Academic All-America® honors in five years.
Montemurri, a native of Windsor, Ontario, Canada (Holy Names Catholic), started all 20 matches this season, and led the Falcons in minutes played. The defender has been on the pitch for 1,873 of the Falcons' 1,877-plus minutes this fall.
He scored five points on a pair of goals and an assist for the Falcons in 2021. At the other end of the pitch, he helped the Orange and Brown keep nine clean sheets in those 20 matches. BGSU had a team goals-against average of just 1.10 on the year.
The ninth shutout of the season came in the first round of the NCAA Championships, as the Falcons went to Louisville and came away with a 1-0 win over the Cardinals.
In the classroom, Montemurri has a 3.983 cumulative grade-point average as a physics major.
Last month, he was named to the Academic All-District® First Team, in the process seeing his name placed on the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot
The Academic All-District® and All-America® Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District® teams are divided into geographic districts across the United States and Canada. Academic All-District® honorees are placed on the Academic All-America® ballot.
For more information about CoSIDA's Academic All-District® and Academic All-America® Teams program, visit AcademicAllAmerica.com on CoSIDA.com.
Montemurri is the first Falcon to earn Academic All-America® honors from CoSIDA since both Pat Flynn and Joe Sullivan each earned first-team accolades in 2016.
The Falcons finished the season with a record of 11-6-3, and BGSU advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships. BG picked up a 1-0 victory at Louisville in the first round of the national tourney, marking the fifth NCAA Tournament victory in program history, and the first since 1997. The Falcons now have a record of 36-20-7 over the last 63 matches, dating to late in the 2018 season. A total of 13 of the 20 setbacks in that time have come by a single goal.
