Redshirt freshman fires one-hitter & strikes out a school-record 20 batters
Payton Gottshall was nothing short of dominant in downtown Cleveland on Friday afternoon (Feb. 12). The Bowling Green State University redshirt freshman fired a complete-game one-hit shutout, striking out a school-record 20 hitters as the Falcons downed Cleveland State University, 3-0, at the Krenzler Dome.
The Vikings salvaged a split of the doubleheader with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
Evelyn Loyola provided all of the run support Gottshall would need in the opener, with a two-out, three-run homer in the third inning.
On the day, Loyola hit .750 with an .857 on-base percentage. She was 3-for-4 with three walks.
Sarah Gonzalez drove in BG's lone run in the nightcap, with a fourth-inning single that scored Nikki Sorgi. Sorgi scored a run in each game.
True freshman Harlie Vannatter took the loss in the circle in game two. She allowed only one earned run and five hits in her collegiate debut, walking just one batter while striking out eight.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• Payton Gottshall. That's it. That's the note.
• Actually, there might not be enough room on the internet for all of the notes on BG's pitching phenom, but here are just a few facts from Friday...
• Gottshall faced 22 CSU batters. She allowed one hit, a single to left field by the leadoff batter in the fifth inning. She allowed one other batter to put the ball in play, and that resulted in a popup back to the circle. The remaining 20 plate appearances by the Vikings resulted in strikeouts, with 17 of those 20 at-bats ending in a swing and a miss.
• Gottshall's strikeout total set a school record for a seven-inning game. In fact, the 20-K total ties her for third on the NCAA Division-I list for strikeouts in a regulation-length contest. The list, from the 2021 NCAA Softball Record Book...

QUOTING COACH WILLIS
"I was pleased with how the team played today at Cleveland State. It was great to be back out on the field and face some competition. Payton Gottshall threw a gem of a game and her offense did a good job providing some run support. It was a fun game to watch."
"The second game was a close, but tough game as we fell short offensively and had some miscues on defense. Harlie Vannatter did a nice job in her first collegiate outing and she will only get better from here. With some small adjustments offensively, we will be ready for the doubleheader tomorrow."
GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons outhit Cleveland State, 10-1, in the opener. BGSU put at least one runner on base every inning, and the Orange and Brown had at least two runners on base in each of the last six frames.
• While BGSU struggled to bring those runners around, leaving 12 runners on base, the Vikings had trouble generating any baserunners at all. Payton Gottshall retired the first 12 CSU batters before Becky Hurosky singled to lead off the fifth. Then, Gottshall set down the next nine to close out the win.
• The Falcons put three runs on the board – which would prove to be two more than Gottshall would need – in the third inning. Greta L'Esperance led off with a bunt single and promptly stole second. She would stay at second on an infield single by Peyton Dolejs. CSU starter Hannah Griffin would get two outs, as Madi McCoy's fly ball hit the roof of the dome for an infield fly, and Nikki Sorgi's ground ball resulted in a force at second.
• But, Evelyn Loyola homered on the very next pitch, scoring L'Esperance and Sorgi ahead of her.
• Meanwhile, Gottshall struck out the first 10 batters she faced, all swinging. Kiera Frascone became the first Viking to put a ball in play, with a popup that Gottshall gloved, before the BG hurler struck out Mackenzie Tucker to retire the side. Tucker's at-bat marked the first strikeout looking by a CSU hitter.
• Following Hurosky's leadoff single in the fifth, Gottshall struck out nine-straight batters to end the game. Valeri Broschk struck out looking to end the fifth, and Hurosky did the same to end the seventh. Those two at-bats bookended seven more swinging strikeouts for CSU hitters.
• So to recap, Gottshall struck out 10-straight batters to begin the game and nine consecutive hitters to end it.
• Gottshall threw 77 strikes out of 101 total pitches.
• At the plate, Loyola was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and three runs batted in. L'Esperance and Sophie Bosket each went 2-for-4 for the Falcons, and Logan Everett reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Vikings scored a first-inning run against Harlie Vannatter, who was making her collegiate debut, but it would be the only earned run CSU would score. Sydney Bajusz, who was 2-for-2 in the nightcap, led off with a double, and came home on a two-out, ground-rule double by Becky Hurosky.
• The Falcons put a pair of runners in scoring position in the second, on an Evelyn Loyola walk and back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Logan Everett and Sarah Gonzalez. Everett was safe on a throwing error by CSU pitcher Taylor Betz, while Gonzalez moved Everett and pinch-runner Marlie McNulty to second and third, respectively. But, Betz was able to escape the jam. She got a strikeout for the second out, then – after a pitch got away from Hurosky, the catcher – Betz covered the plate to take a throw and tag McNulty.
• Vannatter struck out the side in the bottom of the second, and allowed only a walk in the third. Then, the Falcons tied the contest in the fourth
• Nikki Sorgi led off with a single to center, and one out later, a fielder's-choice grounder by Everett resulted in BG runners at first and second. Then, Gonzalez singled to plate Sorgi, before Betz was able to get a fielder's-choice grounder and a strikeout to avoid further damage.
• Vannatter worked a 1-2-3 fourth inning, striking out the final two hitters, before allowing a one-out double to Kaelin Ettinger in the fifth. The next batter, Jenna Deang, hit a grounder to the left side, and shortstop Madi McCoy threw to Gonzalez at third to erase Ettinger.
• But, a Bajusz double moved Deang to third, and an infield error on Kiera Frascone's bunt allowed both Deang and Bajusz to come around to score.
• Betz allowed only one baserunner, on a walk to Loyola, over the final two innings. She threw a three-hitter, walking three and striking out three.
• Vannatter allowed just one earned run and five hits, walking one batter and striking out eight. She threw 72 of her 101 pitches for strikes in her debut.
• Sorgi, Gonzalez and Greta L'Esperance each had one hit for BG in the nightcap, while Loyola walked twice.
NOTEWORTHY
• Payton Gottshall's epic game marked her fifth career contest with a double-digit strikeout total.
• Her previous career-high strikeout total was 17, recoded in last season's opening game, vs. Tennessee Tech.
• In that TTU game, which also was played on a Friday afternoon (Feb. 14, 2020), Gottshall also threw a complete-game one-hitter. The hit on that day was a homer, as Gottshall and the Falcons recorded a 3-1 win.
• Friday's performance at CSU was Gottshall's 10th complete game in 12 collegiate starts. It was her third shutout and her fourth one-hitter in those 12 starts.
• The CSU game marked the first time in those 12 starts that Gottshall did not walk a batter.
• In the 2020 and 2021 season-opening games, Gottshall faced a total of 45 batters, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out 37.
• Evelyn Loyola was a perfect 3-for-3 in the opener, for her third three-hit game as a Falcon and her first since the 2019 season.
• True freshman Peyton Dolejs recorded the first hit of her collegiate career, with an infield single in her second-ever BGSU at-bat.
• Redshirt freshman Sophie Bosket picked up her first collegiate hit with an infield single in the fourth inning, and recorded her second hit with another infield single two innings later. Following the second hit, she stole her first base as a Falcon. Bosket had just seven at-bats during the truncated 2020 season.
• Marlie McNulty, in her first-ever collegiate appearance, stole second base after pinch-running for Loyola in the second inning. She made a pinch-running appearance in game two as well.
• Dolejs, Makailah Dees, Madison Hendrix and Harlie Vannatter each made their first collegiate start on Friday, with Dolejs starting both games.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons will return to the Krenzler Dome for another doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 13). Game one is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
