Fleming, Hempfling combine for 37 points as BG tops the defending MAC champions
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team used a 14-0 run spanning the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth to overtake Central Michigan University, and the Falcons went on to a 76-67 win Wednesday night (Feb. 17) at the Stroh Center.
Freshman Lexi Fleming had a game-high 20 points to help the Falcons (16-4, 12-3 Mid-American Conference) remain atop the standings, while junior Kadie Hempfling had 17.
Fleming scored 10 points in each half, while Hempfling had 15 of her 17 in the second half as BGSU outscored the Chippewas (13-7, 11-5 MAC) by a 42-29 count after the intermission.
Senior Angela Perry scored 12 points off the bench, while freshman Nyla Hampton had 11 points and a team-leading three steals. The Falcons had 21 points off turnovers to CMU's 16, giving BG the advantage in that category for the 19th time in 20 games this season.
Molly Davis (18), Maddy Watters (17) and Micaela Kelly (16) combined for 51 of the Chippewas' 16 points, and Watters had a game-high seven assists.
Central took a seven-point lead, the visitors' largest of the game, midway through the third quarter, and CMU's lead was six points after Kelly's transition layup with 3:43 left in the period. But, beginning with a Madisen Parker three-pointer, the Falcons would score the final 12 points of the quarter, and Perry's jumper early in the fourth period capped the 14-0 run that gave BG the lead for good.
The lead reached double digits for the first time on a Hempfling layup with just under five minutes to go, and another Hempfling bucket gave the Falcons a 12-point advantage, the largest of the game, with 2:57 remaining.
Central got within six points on triples by Watters and Kelly, but both Hempfling and Fleming made a pair of free throws to extend the BG lead back out to 10 points in the final minute.
The Falcons had advantages of 50-36 in points in the paint and 22-4 in bench scoring, and BGSU had 36 rebounds to CMU's 27 on the night.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• Wednesday's victory was BGSU's 12th MAC win of the season. The 2020-21 Falcons have matched the conference win total for the previous four years combined.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"This was a tremendous team win. We just had so many different kids step up. They made a good run in the third quarter, and I liked the way we fought back. Then, I loved our push to end the quarter, and I liked our toughness and our effort to finish the game with a lead as well. Central Michigan is such a good team, and they have incredibly dynamic guards. I was very proud of our 40-minute effort."
FIRST QUARTER
• The teams traded scoring runs for nearly all of the opening quarter. BGSU scored the first seven points of the game, saw CMU reel off the game's next 11 points, then rallied with an 8-0 run.
• Nyla Hampton took a pass from classmate Lexi Fleming and knocked down a three-pointer, and layups by Fleming (in transition after a long outlet pass by Kadie Hempfling) and Hampton (on a drive down the lane) gave the Orange and Brown a 7-0 lead with under 90 seconds gone.
• But, Maddy Watters hit a long three-pointer to get CMU on the board at the 7:20 mark, and both Watters and Micaela Kelly scored off of BG turnovers to tie the game. Jahari Smith and Kyra Bussell each knocked down shots to give the visitors an 11-7 lead.
• But, back came the Falcons, as Fleming's floater was followed by Angela Perry's tough shot off glass, tying the score with 3:37 left in the quarter. Kenzie Lewis drove for a hoop before Fleming hit a reverse layup off of a baseline drive. Molly Davis responded with a bucket for the Chippewas, and Bussell's jumper tied the game at 15-all after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Clare Glowniak backed her defender down the lane for a bucket to open the second-quarter scoring, and Hempfling scored inside as well. Kelly answered with a triple for the visitors, but another Glowniak bucket gave BG a three-point lead, and when Elissa Brett fed Madisen Parker for a three-ball, the Falcons had a 24-20 advantage.
• The lead was still four points after Lewis spotted Fleming for a layup, but a quick 7-0 run put the visitors back on top. Fleming's driving layup dropped through the hoop, as BG began an eight-point run. Perry scored inside, and Hampton stole the ball from Davis on back-to-back CMU possessions. The BG freshman drove and scored after the first steal, and the second resulted in a Perry putback and a 34-29 Falcon lead with 2:24 on the clock.
• But, the explosive Chippewas scored nine-straight points to end the half. Davis scored the last five, splitting a pair of free throws with just 2.6 seconds remaining to give CMU a 38-34 lead at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• Fleming drilled a three-point try on the opening possession of the second half, and after Davis answered with a quick triple, Hempfling banked a shot high off glass and in, then converted a driving layup to tie the score at 41-41.
• A long three-ball by Watters, however, began a 7-0 run for the Chippewas. A nifty no-look pass from Watters resulted in a layup by Anika Weekes, and a Davis layup made it a 48-41 game. Hampton snapped the run with a driving layup of her own, but Watters again found an open Weekes under the hoop.
• But, Hempfling knocked down a straightaway triple, and after Kelly scored in transition, Hempfling kicked the ball to Parker for a triple. CMU used a timeout, but Fleming came up with an immediate 'pick-six' as she deflected a Watters inbounds pass and sailed in for a layup. When Perry was fouled and hit a pair of free throws with 2:12 on the clock, the Falcons had a 53-52 lead, and BG would not trail again.
• Perry took a pass from Parker and scored inside, and Fleming hit a long three-pointer with just nine seconds left in the quarter, giving the hosts a 58-52 lead.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Olivia Trice found Perry for a foul-line jumper, completing BG's 14-0 run with just under nine minutes to go. Bussell snapped the run with a jumper, but after neither team scored for over two minutes, Brett drove and dished to an open Hempfling for a layup. Davis answered with a floater, but Brett had an answer to that answer, with an up-and-under layup in traffic to give BG a 64-56 lead. Then, after Hampton rebounded a CMU miss, Hempfling ran the entire length of the floor to take a pass from the Falcon freshman and hit a layup that gave the Falcons a 10-point advantage as Central used a timeout with 4:54 to go.
• After Davis scored at the other end, layups by Brett and Hempfling gave the hosts a 12-point lead, the largest of the game, with 2:57 left.
• CMU cut that lead in half, as Watters and Kelly each connected from downtown. Kelly's trey made it a 70-64 game with 48.4 seconds on the clock. The Chippewas fouled Hempfling, who made both shots at the stripe, and after CMU missed a three-pointer, Fleming was fouled and hit two charity tosses for a 74-64 lead with 35.5 seconds to go. Watters knocked down another three-pointer, but the visitors could draw no closer. Hampton capped the game's scoring with two free throws.

• The Falcons were 8-of-10 at the free-throw line, going 6-for-8 from the stripe in the fourth quarter. The Chippewas were just 1-of-4 at the line for the game.
