BSU Rallies for Sunday Win over Falcons, 9-5
March 28, 2021 | Softball
Sammy Dees, McCoy combine for 5 hits; Gonzalez homers for second-straight day
For the Falcons (10-13, 2-6 MAC), Sammy Dees went 3-for-4 to lead a 10-hit attack, while Madi McCoy was 2-for-4 with a double. Sarah Gonzalez homered for the second-straight day.
But, the Cardinals (10-9, 4-0 MAC) scored five times in the sixth inning to take the lead, and Tieghan Morio pitched three innings of no-hit ball to pick up the win in relief.
NOTEWORTHY
• Madi McCoy doubled in the first inning, then singled and drove in a run in the fourth. McCoy now has a nine-game hitting streak, and has hit .500 (14-of-28) in that time.
BGSU-BSU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• BGSU struck first off of BSU starter Darcie Huber. With one out, Sammy Dees singled, and Madi McCoy roped a line drive to the wall in right-center for a double. Dees took third on the play, and she tagged and scored on a sacrifice fly by Evelyn Loyola.
• The Orange and Brown doubled the lead in the second inning. Nikki Sorgi hit a ball over the BSU third baseman's head for a single, and Makailah Dees walked on four pitches with two outs. Greta L'Esperance also drew a walk to load the bases, and Sammy Dees singled to left to score Sorgi.
• BGSU starter Sydney Stepp kept the Cardinals scoreless through two innings, but the hosts got on the board in the third, on back-to-back doubles by Janae Hogg and Stacy Payton. But, Sarah Gonzalez responded by leading off the Falcon fourth with a homer to left-center. It marked the second round-tripper in as many days for the BG third baseman.
• The Gonzalez homer was the first of five hits in the fourth inning for the Falcons. L'Esperance, Sammy Dees and McCoy had back-to-back-to-back singles, with McCoy's hit scoring L'Esperance. After a fielder's-choice grounder resulted in the second out, Maycee Godbolt singled to score McCoy for a 5-1 BGSU lead.
• But, the Cardinals responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Payton singled to plate Haley Wynn, and Faith Hensley tripled to drive home two more runs. Hannah Davies, who had entered the game in the third inning, retired the hosts in the fifth, but BSU would mount a rally in the sixth.
• Payton homered to lead off that BSU sixth, tying the game at 5-5. Then, Hensley reached on an error and Delanie Johnson singled, and Amaia Daniel doubled to drive home a runner and give the Cards the lead.
• Kennedy Wynn had a run-scoring single before Haley Wynn homered to give the hosts a 9-5 lead. Morio worked around an error in the seventh, as BG got a runner to third base before a fly ball ended the game.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons will host Akron for a four-game series next weekend, beginning with a 3:00 p.m. single game on Friday (April 2) at Meserve Field.
• Then, BGSU will meet the Zips in a Saturday (April 3) doubleheader, starting at 1:00 p.m., and a Sunday (April 4) single game that begins at noon.
