Two One-Run Games Go UB's Way Friday

Bulls hang on for a pair of 5-4 wins in Western New York
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Bowling Green State University softball team came up short in a pair of 5-4 decisions on Friday afternoon (April 9), falling to the University at Buffalo in a doubleheader at Nan Harvey Field.
The Falcons (14-15, 6-8 Mid-American Conference) outhit UB in the twinbill, but the Bulls (8-19, 6-6 MAC) hit a pair of homers in each game. The hosts scored four third-inning runs in both contests, and nine of UB's 10 runs scored via the long ball.
Both Evelyn Loyola and Sarah Gonzalez reached base in every plate appearance for BGSU in game one. Loyola hit a solo homer and walked three times, while Gonzalez was 2-for-2 with a base on balls.
In the nightcap, both Sammy Dees and Greta L'Esperance had two hits, with Dees driving in a pair of runs.
Nikki Sorgi had a hit and a walk in the first game, then had another hit and scored two runs in the nightcap.
QUOTING COACH WILLIS
"It was a tough day for the program, coming up short in two close ball games. As much as there were runs given up today, we had many opportunities to manufacture several multi-run innings and outscore our opponent. We had a lot of runners in scoring position with less than two outs and we failed to execute."
"Our sense of urgency needs to start from the jump tomorrow, and we will look to capitalize early in the games rather than trying to make something happen late."
BGSU-UB GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons took the lead against Ally Marcano in the second, with the aid of several UB errors. Evelyn Loyola drew a leadoff walk, and Maycee Godbolt laid down a sacrifice bunt. On the play, Marcano's throw to first was off line, and Godbolt was safe as pinch-runner Sophie Bosket advanced to third base.
• Then, Godbolt stole second, and Bosket scored when the throw to second base was wild. After another error and walks to Sophie Weber and Sarah Gonzalez, though, the Bulls got out of the inning without giving up any additional runs.
• And, UB tied the score in the bottom of the frame when Brianna Castro hit a one-out homer.
• In the third, the Bulls loaded the bases on a walk, an infield error and a base hit, and Jenna Richmond's grand slam gave the hosts a 5-1 lead. Hannah Davies entered the game at that point, and proceeded to strike out the next three hitters to retire the side.
• In fact, Davies retired the first seven batters she faced, striking out six. She threw four innings of two-hit shutout relief.
• Meanwhile, BGSU chipped away at UB's four-run lead. In the fourth, Nikki Sorgi led off with a single and took second on Weber's grounder. Gonzalez singled to plate Sorgi, and Payton Hamm's single put runners at the corners, before Gonzalez scored on a Greta L'Esperance grounder.
• Sammy Dees doubled to put runners at second and third, but UB was able to escape further damage.
• In the fifth, Loyola led off with a long homer to straightaway center, making it a 5-4 game. But, Marcano, who had left the game in the second inning, returned to the circle and kept BG off of the scoreboard the rest of the way.
• Gonzalez lined a single up the middle in the sixth inning and got as far as second base, and Loyola and Sorgi each drew seventh-inning walks, but the Falcons could not push the tying run across the plate.
BGSU-UB GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Bulls again used the long ball to take the lead in the nightcap. Anna Aguon led off the bottom of the first with a homer.
• In the Falcon third, Sorgi was hit by a Alexis Lucyshyn pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball. Then, Makailah Dees ripped a ball to left for a run-scoring triple that tied the score. Dees would tag and score easily when her sister, Sammy, lifted a fly ball to center.
• But, for the second-straight game, UB scored four times in the bottom of the third. Aguon singled, stole second and scored on a Rachel Steffan single, and after an Alexis Matheney walk, Lucyshyn homered to give Buffalo a 5-2 lead.
• BG got a run back in the fifth, as Sorgi singled, took second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a bunt single by L'Esperance. L'Esperance alertly advanced to second when no UB fielder covered the base.
• Then, Sorgi scored on a Sammy Dees grounder, but with L'Esperance at third, UB pitcher Lucyshyn got an inning-ending grounder.
• Loyola walked yet again to lead off the sixth, and pinch-runner Bosket took second on a sac bunt by Logan Everett, but she was stranded there.
• In the seventh, Sorgi lined a ball up the middle, but shortstop Castro made a nifty play, ranging to her left to grab the ball and fire to first. That out would prove to be crucial as, after a strikeout, three-straight Falcons singled.
• L'Esperance and Sammy Dees each singled to put runners aboard, and Madi McCoy singled up the middle to plate L'Esperance. But, the throw to third was in time to get Dees for the game's final out.
STATS, LEADERS & NOTES
• Loyola and Gonzalez, as mentioned, each reached base in every plate appearance in game one. Gonzalez was 2-for-2 with a walk, a run and an RBI.
• Loyola was 1-for-1 with three bases on balls, scoring a run and driving in a run. She walked yet again in game two.
• Sorgi had a hit, a walk and a run in the opener.
• For the Bulls, both Lucyshyn and Aguon went 2-for-3, but the big blow was the grand slam by Richmond.
• Julia Tarantino got the win despite giving up all four BG runs in under three innings. Marcano picked up the save, allowing just one run and one hit in four-and-a-third non-consecutive innings.
• Sydney Stepp took the loss for the Falcons, while Davies allowed just two hits in four innings of shutout relief. Davies struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
• In game two, Sammy Dees was 2-for-3 with a sac fly and a pair of RBI, while L'Esperance went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Sorgi was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
• Davies allowed five runs and five hits in her complete-game effort, walking three and striking out five. She gave up just seven hits in 10 total innings on Friday.
• Steffan went 2-for-3 for the hosts, while Aguon scored two runs and Lucyshyn drove in three. Lucyshyn picked up the win in the circle, allowing four runs on seven hits in her complete-game effort.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons and Bulls are scheduled to conclude their four-game weekend series with another doubleheader on Saturday (April 10). First pitch of the first game is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Nan Harvey Field.
• BGSU's next home game is scheduled for Wednesday, April 28, when Toledo comes to Meserve Field for a twinbill.
