McNulty picks up three hits in DH, Gottshall records 20th win of season
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Marlie McNulty drove in the winning run and scored an insurance run as the Bowling Green State University softball team picked up a 3-1 win over Western Michigan University on Wednesday afternoon (May 12). The win gave the Falcons (27-27, 19-20 MAC) a split of the teams'  Mid-American Conference doubleheader at Ebert Field.
The Broncos (14-34, 10-24 MAC) used a seventh-inning rally to post a 2-1 win in the day's first game.
Payton Gottshall pitched a pair of complete games for the Falcons on Wednesday, with a total of 220 pitches – 111 in the first game and 109 in the second. The redshirt freshman threw 142 of those 220 pitches for strikes.
Gottshall's win in game two was her 20th of the season. She is just the fourth BGSU pitcher, and the first since 1995, to reach the 20-win plateau in a season.
McNulty had a total of three hits on the day, while Makailah Dees and Madi McCoy each had a hit in both games. McCoy drove in a run in the nightcap to give her 43 RBI on the season, the second-highest total in BGSU history.
QUOTING COACH WILLIS
"I am proud of the team and how they played this season. There were many obstacles and distractions that we couldn't control, and our players did a great job focusing on what they could control. I am so very proud of the senior performances this year and the way they have positively changed our program. Â It was great to finish on a win and send our seniors out the right way."
"The future looks bright thanks to our upperclassmen, and we are looking forward to the return of the MAC tournament and making a run in the 2022 postseason."
BGSU-WMU GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• BGSU starter Payton Gottshall was just one out away from a shutout win before the Broncos rallied.
• The only hit by either team in the first two innings was an Alyssa Kramer single with one out in the bottom of the second, but Gottshall set down the next two hitters.
• BGSU put runners at the corners in the third. Sarah Gonzalez led off with a walk, and took second on Marlie McNulty's one-out sacrifice bunt. Sammy Dees then singled to right, but the hard-hit ball was hit directly at rightfielder Maggie Kehoe, and Gonzalez was forced to stop at third. WMU starter Reily Galloway then got an inning-ending strikeout.
• WMU put runners at the corners with one out in the home half of the third, but on a grounder to second, Sammy Dees threw to catcher Evelyn Loyola to get an out at the plate, before Gottshall struck out the next batter.
• Gottshall ended each of the first three innings, and four of the first five frames, with a strikeout.
• The Falcons took the lead in the fourth. Madi McCoy led off with a double, and took third on Loyola's sac bunt. Then, Logan Everett singled up the middle to put BG on the board.
• In the bottom of the inning, Gonzalez made a nice play at third, grabbing a liner off the bat of Kramer and firing to first to double up a pinch-runner.
• BG got hits from McNulty in the fifth, and Loyola and Everett in the sixth, but could not add to the lead.
• Gottshall worked around a leadoff double by Kaylen Glenfield in the sixth, retiring the next three hitters and leaving Glenfield stranded at second.
• And, in the seventh, the first two Broncos were retired on a popped-up bunt and a grounder to short. But, Madison Duell walked, and Jordyn Swinehart singled to put runners at the corners. Mackenzie Swinehart, hitting .400 on the year, drew a walk to load the bases, and Glenfield followed with a single through the right side of the infield to score a pair of runners and give the Broncos the win.
BGSU-WMU GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Both pitchers, Gottshall and WMU's Autumn Godwin, allowed a first-inning hit. For the Falcons, Greta L'Esperance led off the game with a single and stole second, but she was stranded there.
• BG put a pair of runners aboard in the second inning, as Everett reached on a one-out infield error, and Makailah Dees singled with two down. But, Godwin then got a ground ball that led to an inning-ending force play at second.
• The Broncos broke on top in the third, as Jordyn Swinehart was hit by a pitch and took second on her sister's sac bunt. She went to third on a grounder, then scored on Sydney Stefanick's double down the left-field line.
• BGSU responded immediately, scoring twice in the fourth. Loyola led off with a walk, and Nikki Sorgi's sacrifice bunt sent pinch-runner Madison French to second. Gonzalez walked, and pinch-hitter Sophie Weber came through with a two-out single up the middle that plated French with the tying run.
• The next hitter, McNulty, also singled, scoring Gonzalez to give the Falcons the lead.
• Gottshall worked around a walk in the home half of the fourth, but WMU put a pair of runners aboard with two down in the fifth, as Glenfield singled and Stefanick walked. The BG redshirt freshman, however, retired the next hitter to keep BG on top.
• In the seventh, the Falcons doubled the lead. McNulty and L'Esperance each singled, and a Sammy Dees sac bunt moved the runners up 60 feet each. Then, McCoy singled through the right side to plate McNulty. Relief pitcher Stefanick got a pair of popups to end the inning, but the Falcons led by two.
• And, that was more than enough for Gottshall. Mackenzie Swinehart reached on a one-out infield single in the bottom of the inning, but Glenfield's grounder to McCoy resulted in a force at second, and Gottshall then struck out Stefanick to end the game.
STATS, LEADERS & NOTES
• Everett led the Falcons' seven-hit attack in game one, going 2-for-3 and driving in BGSU's lone run.
• Five of her teammates had one hit apiece, including McCoy, who doubled and scored.
• Both Loyola and McNulty had a hit and a sac bunt in the opener.
• Gottshall was one out away from a shutout win before the Broncos mounted a rally. She allowed eight hits, walking two and striking out six.
• For the hosts, Jordyn Swinehart and Glenfield combined for five of the team's seven hits. Swinehart was 3-for-3 and scored a run, while Glenfield went 2-for-4 with a double and the walk-off two-run single.
• Galloway picked up the complete-game win, giving up one run and seven hits. She walked just one batter and struck out six.
• In game two. BGSU outhit WMU by an 8-5 count. McNulty was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while L'Esperance went 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
• McCoy and Weber also drove in runs, while French, a pitcher, scored the first run of her BGSU career.
• Gottshall picked up the complete-game win, allowing one run and scattering five hits. She walked three and struck out five.
• Godwin took the loss for BG, giving up two runs in four innings. Stefanick pitched the final three innings and gave up one run. Both WMU hurlers allowed four hits, with Godwin striking out five and Stefanick four.
• Stefanick was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and an RBI to lead Western's five-hit attack in the second game.
