Neal, Richard each surpass their respective seeds by double digits in Saturday action
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Bowling Green State University wrapped up weekend action at the NCAA Track & Field East Region Preliminaries on Saturday (May 29), as the Falcons competed in three events. Zaresha Neal just missed advancing to nationals in the discus, while Brianna Richard exceeded her seed in the triple jump and the Falcon 4x400 M relay team capped the weekend festivities.
The four-day event, hosted by the University of North Florida, was held at Hodges Stadium.
Neal, seeded 27th in the discus, finished 13th, missing a trip to the National Championships by one spot. Richard, seeded 37th in the triple jump, also exceeded her seed by double digits, placing 26th. The Falcons' 4x400 M, the first relay team in program history to advance to the regional meet, finished 23rd overall in the final event of the weekend.
QUOTING COACH SNELLING
"What a great experience! The returners can learn from this weekend and fuel that fire to take bigger steps next year. We appreciate everything our seniors have done this weekend and collectively in their careers at Bowling Green. And, we look forward to watching Kaila Butler represent our program in Eugene."
SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS
• In the discus, Zaresha Neal's first throw on Saturday afternoon was 47.62m (156-3), and she fouled on her second throw. Then, however, the sophomore surpassed her first throw by nearly five meters, with an effort of 52.53m (172-4) on her third throw.
• That put her into the top 12, but during the last round of the final flight, she was bumped to 13th, just missing out on a trip to Oregon.
• Still, Neal surpassed her seed by 14 spots.
• Brianna Richard also surpassed her seed by a double-digit total. She was seeded 37th for the triple jump, and recorded distances of 12.28m and 12.25m, respectively, in her first two efforts.
• Then, Richard jumped 12.58m (41-3 1/4) on her third attempt, and wound up in 26th place, 11 spots higher than her seed.
• The Falcons' 4x400 M team of Chasatea Brown, Savannah Nevels, Ryen Draper and Iyanna Ross concluded the evening with a time of 3:41.64. That effort enabled the quartet to finish 23rd.
SURPASSING EXPECTATIONS
• Under tenth-year coach Lou Snelling, the Falcons have sent 39 representatives to the regionals. Student-athletes have equaled or bettered their seeds in 31 of those 39 appearances (79 percent).
• Over the course of Snelling's BGSU tenure, every individual or team seeded in the top 18 at regionals has finished inside the top 12 and advanced to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.
