Senior shortstop goes 5-for-5 with two homers in Friday's second game
The Bowling Green State University softball team used different methods to achieve the same outcome, sweeping Friday's (May 7) Mid-American Conference doubleheader against host Northern Illinois University by scores of 1-0 and 15-4 at Mary M. Bell Field.
Payton Gottshall picked up the win in each game, with a complete-game shutout in the opener and nearly five innings of no-hit relief in the nightcap.
The Falcons (25-25, 17-18 MAC) had six hits in the first game, and the game's only run was unearned.
In game two, Madi McCoy went 5-for-5 with two homers and four RBI, and Sammy Dees had a grand slam as part of an eight-run seventh inning. Five different players had multiple-hit games, and no fewer than seven Falcons scored two runs apiece.
McCoy's total of five hits is believed to be a BGSU single-game record. In addition to her two homers, she also had a pair of doubles in the win.
The Huskies (18-30, 12-20 MAC) had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, and the contest was all knotted up at 4-4 after three innings. But, the Falcons scored three times in the fourth inning before blowing the game wide open in the eighth.

NOTEWORTHY
• Payton Gottshall's shutout in Friday's opener was her eighth of the season, the highest total by a BGSU pitcher in 15 years, since BGSU Hall-of-Famer Liz Vrabel had eight complete-game shutouts in 2006.
• As mentioned, Madi McCoy's total of five hits in the second game is believed to be a school record.
• BGSU's totals of 15 runs and 16 hits are the team's highest in a game in over two years, since the Falcons pounded out 19 hits in a 21-0 win over St. Bonaventure on March 16, 2019.
• BGSU's 16 hits are the most in a MAC game in three years, since April 1, 2018. On that date, the Falcons had 18 hits in a win at NIU.
• BG had not scored as many as 15 runs in a MAC game in over nine years. The last such game also came at NIU, as BG scored 15 runs in a win at Mary M. Bell Field on April 27, 2012.
DINGERS
• Madi McCoy's two-homer game was the third of her career. She is one of just four players in school history to have more than one multi-homer game, joining Hayley Wiemer (four such games), Paige Berger (three) and Gina Rango (three).
• McCoy is only the third Falcon with two two-homer games in the same season, joining Rango (2006) and Wiemer (2008) on that list.
• McCoy also homered twice in a win over Toledo on April 28 at Meserve Field, giving her a pair of two-homer games in a 10-day span.
BGSU-NIU GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The two starting pitchers in game one, BGSU phenom Payton Gottshall and NIU's Claire Norred, combined to allow 11 hits and no earned runs.
• The first four BG batters grounded out to second baseman Sam Mallinder, before Evelyn Loyola drew a one-out walk in the second inning. Peyton Dolejs continued her hot hitting with a double that sent pinch-runner Sophie Bosket to third base, but Norred then got a grounder back to the circle, with the runners forced to hold, followed by an inning-ending ground ball to third base.
• BG took the lead with a two-out rally in the third inning. Three consecutive batters hit the ball up the middle, just to the shortstop side of the second-base bag. Sammy Dees and Madi McCoy each reached on base hits, and Dees scored when shortstop Kelly Walinski was unable to field Nikki Sorgi's bouncer.
• Logan Everett doubled over the rightfielder's head with one out in the fourth inning, and Sarah Gonzalez reached on an infield single, with Everett forced to hold. But, Norred got a one-hopper back to the circle, throwing to third to cut down the lead runner, then got another ground ball to end the inning.
• Norred would allow only two more baserunners, as Sammy Dees reached on an error in the fifth and Greta L'Esperance had a bunt single in the seventh. But, the Huskies were unable to manufacture the tying run.
• NIU had gotten a runner as far as third base in the first inning, on a single, stolen base and a throwing error, but Gottshall's third strikeout of the frame halted that rally.
• A third-inning walk began a streak in which the NIU leadoff hitter reached base in four consecutive innings. But, Gottshall struck out two hitters in the third, and catcher Loyola teamed up with shortstop McCoy to gun down a would-be base-stealer for the second out.
• NIU's first hit of the game came when Amberly Rodriguez singled to begin the fourth. L'Esperance made a nice running catch in center for the first out, but Walinski singled, and the runners each tagged and advanced after a fly ball to left. A walk to Mallinder loaded the bases before Gottshall struck out the next hitter for out number three.
• Kira Mickelson singled to begin the fifth, but on a sacrifice bunt, Mickelson was out attempting to advance to third base, and first baseman Sorgi grabbed a bunt attempt off the bat of the next NIU hitter.
• In the sixth, Rodriguez walked, and Katie Keller reached on a slow bouncer up the middle, as Rodriguez slid under the lunging tag attempt of Dees at second. But, McCoy made a nice running catch of a foul pop, and BGSU then turned two on a grounder to McCoy.
• Kara Apato singled with one down in the seventh, but Dees grabbed a popup, then fielded a grounder and flipped the ball to McCoy at second for the final out.
BGSU-NIU GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• BGSU starter Hannah Davies deserved a much better fate in Friday's second game. Davies allowed four hits, but just one earned run, before leaving the game in the third inning.
• NIU scored twice in the first inning. After Courtney James led off with a double, Rodriguez reached on a bunt single, then took off for second. A throw toward second was off the mark and sailed into the outfield, and both runners wound up scoring on the bunt.
• Mackenzie Bryan, the first of four NIU pitchers in the game, allowed two baserunners in each of the first two innings. In the first, L'Esperance walked, but was caught stealing second, and after a McCoy single, a strikeout ended the inning.
• Loyola led off the second with a walk, and a two-out error put runners at the corners, but third baseman Bianca Barone made a nice diving catch of Marlie McNulty's liner.
• BGSU scored four runs after the first two hitters were retired in the third. McCoy homered to left, and Sorgi singled to center. After Loyola walked for the second time in the game, Dolejs reached on a roller toward first. NIU catcher Mickelson, in an attempt to scoop up the ball and toss it with her glove hand in one motion, overran the ball, allowing Sorgi to score and tie the game.
• Then, Everett singled to right, scoring both Loyola and Dolejs, and Everett went all the way to third when the ball got past the right fielder. Delaney Ostrowski replaced Bryan in the circle and struck out the next hitter to retire the side.
• And, NIU tied the game in the bottom of the third. Keller singled, then stole both second and third. Barone doubled to plate Keller, and Mallinder singled, then continued toward second in an attempt to get in a rundown and allow Barone to score. The ploy worked, as an errant throw allowed NIU to tie the game.
• Gottshall replaced Davies in the circle and proceeded to strike out the next two batters to end the inning.
• BGSU took the lead right back in the fourth. McNulty singled, and L'Esperance reached on an infield hit, with McNulty continuing to third when Ostrowski bounced her throw toward first. L'Esperance stole second, before Sammy Dees was hit by a pitch to load the bases. McCoy doubled to plate a pair of runs, and Dees scored on a Sorgi sac fly, making it a 7-4 game.
• McNulty singled again in the fifth, and McCoy doubled again in the sixth, but the Falcons could not increase the lead. Gottshall walked a Huskie batter in both the fifth and sixth, but allowed no other Northern players to reach base before retiring the side in each case.
• Then, the Falcons broke the game wide open in the seventh. Dolejs led off with a walk, then took third on Everett's double. One out later, McNulty reached on a fielder's choice, as Dolejs dove back to third to beat the throw. That loaded the bases, but a grounder to the right side produced a force at the plate for the second out.
• But, BGSU scored eight runs after two were out. Sammy Dees hit a grand slam to dead center to make it an 11-4 game, and the Falcons went back-to-back as McCoy followed with a homer to left-center.
• Emily Dato replaced Dayton Elliott in the circle, and Sorgi greeted her with a line drive back to the circle. The ball caromed off of Dato and toward the second baseman as Sorgi reached on the infield hit. Madison Hendrix reached on a walk, and Dolejs singled off of the diving shortstop's glove, with Sorgi scoring.
• Then, Hendrix scored when Everett reached on an error, and Dolejs scored on a pinch-hit single by Maycee Godbolt. Finally, a grounder up the middle produced an out at second base, ending the inning.
• Gottshall set down the Huskies in order in the home half of the seventh to close out the win.
