Rose, Gurney & Furnas Earn All-MAC Recognition For BGSU Baseball
June 01, 2021 | Baseball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Three student-athletes on the Bowling Green State University baseball team – freshman infielder Nathan Rose, freshman catcher Kyle Gurney and junior first baseman Adam Furnas – earned All-Conference recognition. The Mid-American Conference announced the news on Wednesday, June 2. Rose was named First Team All-MAC at third base. Gurney was named the league's Freshman of the Year, and Furnas took home All-Defensive Team honors at first base.
Rose becomes the first freshman in school history to earn First Team All-MAC honors. The native of Shaker Heights, Ohio is Bowling Green's first All-MAC First Team selection since Trey Keegan in 2015. Rose started 40 games for the Falcons this spring and hit .311 with a .403 on-base percentage. Rose led all MAC freshmen and ranked fifth in the entire conference with 14 doubles. He had 11 multiple-hit games for the Orange and Brown in 2021.
Gurney becomes the third player in school history to be named MAC Freshman of the Year, joining Jake Wilson (2017) and Andy Tracy (1993). The Belleville, Michigan native led all MAC freshmen in batting average (.333), total bases (89) and RBI (40). Gurney's 40 RBI are the most from a Bowling Green player in a single season since 2010. He hit .336 in conference play with five home runs, ranking top-15 in the entire league within both categories. Gurney started 48 games and will bring a 16-game hitting streak into 2022.
Furnas had a complete season. The junior's .435 on-base percentage ranked eighth in the MAC. Furnas hit .335 on the campaign, which is the highest batting average from a Falcon since Brian Bien in 2014. The Bowling Green, Ohio product becomes the program's first corner infielder to be placed on the league's All-Defensive squad. BGSU has now placed at least one player on the All-Defensive Team in every season since the award's inception in 2015. Furnas started 47 games and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in conference play.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Kyle Hallock, the Falcons won 20 games this spring for the first time since 2015. BGSU won 18 league games, which is the most for the program since 2010. Bowling Green won its last two MAC series of the season and went 6-1 over its last seven ballgames.
