MAC Champions garner the honor for the 21st consecutive season
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for academic excellence yet again. The Falcons have received the United States Marine Corps (USMC)/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2020-21 season.
This latest honor marks the 22nd time in the 27-year history of the award -- and the 21st consecutive season -- that the Falcons have earned the honor. BGSU's 21-year streak is tied for the second longest among all NCAA Division-I programs.
"Even though teams might not have played during their usual season or may not have competed at all during the past year, coaches still found ways to lead their players to academic excellence," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "This is a testament to the important role volleyball coaches play in their players success both on and off the court."
BGSU is one of just four programs nationally to have earned this honor in at least the last 17 seasons. Three of those four programs are Mid-American Conference schools.
The award is presented to volleyball programs across the country that hold a cumulative team GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.0 scale. This season, the award has been bestowed upon a record total of 1,275 programs across all levels of high-school and collegiate volleyball.
The Falcon volleyball team currently maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.662. All 17 student-athletes on the 2020-21 roster ended the spring semester with a cumulative GPA higher than 3.000, and 13 of the 17 have a GPA in excess of 3.500.
In the Spring 2021 semester, while the team was winning MAC regular-season and tournament championships on the court, the Falcons had a team GPA of 3.59 for the semester, with eight student-athletes being named to the Dean's List and six earning a perfect 4.000 GPA in the spring.
BGSU's 21-season active streak, as mentioned, is tied for the second-longest streak in the nation in NCAA Division I. Only Indiana State University (23 years) has a longer active streak. The Falcons' 22 total awards ranks third, behind only ISU and Morehead State. The AVCA began the award for the 1992-93 season.
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT CAPACITY
The Stroh Center is set to be back to 100% capacity this season for all sports, including the BGSU Volleyball season!
"The BGSU Division of Health and Wellness continues to monitor national, statewide, and local COVID-19 trends. We're glad to see the continual increase in vaccinations and decreases in cases. We are so proud of how our BGSU student-athletes found a way forward last year and we're happy to be able to open all athletic facilities to full capacity to cheer them on," said Chief Health Officer Ben Batey.
