THE OPENING TIP – STREAKS, STORYLINES AND SIDEBARS
• The Falcons are 6-4 on the season, and BGSU will put a five-game winning streak on the line on Wednesday night. The Falcons went a perfect 4-0 in the month of December after losing the last two November games by a combined six points, and BG began January with a 24-point win over Ball State in New Year's Day's MAC opener at the Stroh.
• Buffalo, 8-4 overall, is one of just two schools with a 2-0 MAC ledger heading into Wednesday night.
• BGSU is 15-4 in MAC regular-season games since the start of the 2020-21 season, but two of the four losses have come to UB. The Bulls swept last year's two regular-season matchups, winning by scores of 82-74 in Western New York and 69-68 (in overtime) in Northwest Ohio.
• If senior Kadie Hempfling is in the starting lineup on Wednesday night, it will be her 100th career start – and her 100th consecutive start – in a BGSU uniform. After coming off the bench to make her collegiate debut (at Michigan State; Nov. 6, 2018), Hempfling has started each of BG's last 99 contests. Hempfling would become just the 14th player in school history to start at least 100 career games.
• Senior Madisen Parker is now tied for fourth in BGSU history with 216 career three-pointers made. She went a perfect 3-for-3 from the arc against Ball State, and has tied Liz Honegger (2003-07) on the career list. Tracy Pontius (2007-11) sits in third place with 235 career triples made.
• The Falcons outscored Ball State by a 49-23 count in the second half on Saturday, including 31-13 in the third quarter. Over the last two games (wins over UT Martin and BSU), BGSU has shot 57.4 percent from the field (35-of-61) in the second half, outscoring the Skyhawks and Cardinals by a combined 92-60 after halftime.
THIS SEASON TO DATE...
• BG, as mentioned, is 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the MAC. The Falcons' overall record includes marks of 4-1 inside the Stroh Center, 0-1 in true road games and 2-2 in neutral-site contests, and BGSU has won five consecutive games.
• That Falcon win streak includes a pair of victories at the Stroh Center, against Valparaiso (69-53; Dec. 5) and Notre Dame College (100-48; Dec. 12) on back-to-back Sundays. BGSU then went to Las Vegas and picked up victories over Oakland (72-60) and UT Martin (67-52; Dec. 21) prior to the holiday break.
• BGSU opened MAC play with Saturday's (Jan. 1) 82-58 victory over Ball State.
• The Falcons posted a 32-point win over East Tennessee State in the season opener, before dropping a 71-60 decision against Horizon League favorite IUPUI and a 94-63 result on the road against then-#21/25 Ohio State. Then, BGSU fell in a pair of narrow contests at the Navy Classic, against George Mason (77-75 in overtime; Nov. 27) and Liberty (76-72; Nov. 28) prior to going 4-0 in December.
• Head coach Robyn Fralick, in her fourth season at the helm of the Falcons, returned 10 players off of last year's BGSU roster.
• The Falcons, after posting records of 10-21 overall and 3-15 in the MAC two years ago, were picked to finish 11th in the 12-team league in 2020-21, according to the preseason coaches' poll. BG proceeded to post a 14-4 MAC record to win the regular-season crown. Then, the Orange and Brown defeated Eastern Michigan and Buffalo in the MAC Tournament in Cleveland, before falling to Central Michigan in the championship game.
• BGSU advanced to the WNIT and finished with a 21-8 overall record. BG tied for the second-best turnaround in the nation, with an improvement of +12.0 games.
• This season, the Falcons were picked to finish second in the MAC in the preseason coaches' poll.
FALCONS VS. THE MAC
• BGSU has won the MAC opener for the second-straight season after the victory vs. Ball State. Last year, the Falcons posted a 71-64 win over Eastern Michigan in the first conference contest of the season (Dec. 11, 2020). It snapped a four-game losing streak in league openers.
• Overall, the Falcons own the second-best record in MAC history. Entering the Buffalo matchup, BGSU has an all-time record of 425-245 (.634) in MAC regular-season games, for the second-highest winning percentage of all league institutions (just behind Toledo [427-245; .635]). BG has the second-most conference wins of all 12 programs, trailing UT by just two victories.
• BGSU leads the all-time series with all 11 MAC foes, making the Falcons the only team in the league with a winning record against every other school. BG also has the most overall victories and highest overall winning pct. of any league institution.
THREE IS A MAGIC NUMBER
• The Falcons made six three-pointers in the third quarter alone on Saturday, outscoring Ball State by a 31-13 count in that 10-minute span. BGSU went 6-of-8 from the arc in that quarter and 12-of-24 for the game.
BATTLE OF THE BOARDS GOES TO BG
• The Falcons outrebounded the opponent in just one of the season's first five games, but BGSU has won the battle of the boards in four of the last five contests. The Orange and Brown topped Valparaiso by 20 (42-22) and Notre Dame by 13 (45-32) in the rebounding category, before doubling up on UT Martin (38-19) in that category. And, BG had a 42-30 advantage on the glass vs. Ball State.
• Over the last five games, BGSU has a rebounding margin of +11.4, with 205 total boards (41.0 per game) to the opponents' 148 (29.6 per contest).
BRETT BESTS BSU ON THE BOARDS
• Junior Elissa Brett had a double-double, with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, in the win over Ball State. The double-double was the fifth of her career.
• Brett singlehandedly outrebounded BSU in the second half, with eight boards as BGSU held a 23-7 lead in that category after halftime.
MADIS3N PARK3R
• After going a perfect 3-for-3 from the arc vs. Ball State, Madisen Parker has made 216 three-point field goals in her storied career. She is now tied for fourth place on the BGSU career list for three-pointers made.
• Parker has caught Liz Honegger (216 treys from 2003-07) on that list. The legendary Lauren Prochaska holds the record with 310 triples in her Falcon tenure (2007-11).
A QUICK LOOK AT THE BULLS
• Buffalo is 8-4 on the season, and the Bulls are off to a 2-0 start in the MAC, with wins over Central Michigan 92-75; Dec. 29) at home and Miami (88-83; Jan. 1) on the road. UB is 6-0 at home, 1-2 on the road and 1-2 in neutral-site games.
• Dyaisha Fair leads the team and is seventh in the nation in scoring, with 22.3 points per game, while Summer Hemphill and Georgia Woolley have 16.0 and 10.0 ppg, respectively. Hemphill has a team-best 8.5 rebounds per contest. Head coach Felisha Legette-Jack welcomed back nine letterwinners, including four starters, from a 2020-21 club that went 15-9 overall and 11-6 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Buffalo, 27-19, in the all-time series, and BGSU won the last meeting, snapping a five-game UB series win streak. The Falcons picked up an 80-67 victory in the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament in downtown Cleveland (March 12, 2021). During the regular season, the Bulls earned an 82-74 win at Alumni Arena (Jan. 13, 2021), then came to the Stroh and withstood a furious Falcon comeback to down BG, 69-68 in OT (March 6, 2021). BGSU is 12-8 in home games, 13-11 on the road and 2-0 at neutral sites vs. UB over the years.
