Buffalo guard scores 40 points in 82-66 win
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Dyaisha Fair exploded for a career-high 40 points, leading the University at Buffalo to an 82-66 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Wednesday night (Jan. 5) inside the Stroh Center.
Fair and the Bulls (9-4, 3-0 Mid-American Conference) built a 22-point halftime lead, taking a 43-21 advantage into the intermission. The Falcons (6-5, 1-1 MAC) were able to creep within 11 points on two occasions in the second half, but could not cut the deficit to single digits.
The loss snapped BGSU's five-game winning streak. It was also the Falcons' first double-digit loss to a MAC team since March of 2020.
Fair was 14-of-22 from the floor, including 6-for-10 from three-point range, en route to breaking the Stroh Center single-game scoring record. Summer Hemphill had a double-double, with 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Bulls, while Dominique Camp added 11 points.
Freshman Amy Velasco scored 15 points to lead three double-figure scorers for BGSU. Senior Kadie Hempfling had 12 points and six rebounds, while junior Elissa Brett had 11 points and five boards.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"It was a really disappointing first half for us. That was the difference in the game. Obviously, Buffalo is a really good team, and we can't come out to start the game the way we did. We need to learn a lesson from this moving forward."
FIRST QUARTER
• Elissa Brett gave the Falcons an early lead, hitting a corner three on BG's first offensive possession of the night. Moments later, Amy Velasco knocked down a shot from outside the arc for a 6-4 BGSU lead.
• But, a pair of buckets by Dyaisha Fair began a 12-0 run for the visitors. Fair scored six points during that stretch, and when she fed Dominique Camp for a transition layup, UB had a 16-6 lead.
• Sophie Dziekan snapped BGSU's four-minute scoreless streak with a banker, and after a pair of Kadie Hempfling free throws and a Zoe Miller layup, the Falcons were back within four points. Adebola Adeyeye answered with a layup for the visitors, but Madisen Parker was fouled on a three-point try with just 4.1 seconds left in the quarter, and the fifth-year Falcon drained all three free-throw attempts, cutting the UB lead to 18-15 after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• The second quarter, however, was all Buffalo. Velasco came up with a steal on the first possession of the period, and the freshman found Brett for a layup. But, leading by just a single point, the Bulls would score six-straight points, including back-to-back jumpers by Summer Hemphill.
• A Dziekan layup made it a five-point game, but UB responded with an 11-0 run, including seven-straight points from Fair. When Hemphill converted a layup at the 3:09 mark, Buffalo's lead was 35-19
• Hempfling's no-look pass freed Jocelyn Tate for a layup, but a Fair triple began a half-ending seven-point run for the visitors.
THIRD QUARTER
• Velasco hit a pull-up jumper early in the third period, and Nyla Hampton's pass led to a Hempfling three-pointer.
• BGSU scored on four-straight possessions, as after Hempfling's triple, Kenzie Lewis assisted Brett for a second-chance layup, then fed Morgan Sharps for a three-pointer. Then, Lewis picked up her third assist in as many trips down the floor, with her long pass finding Hampton for a layup that cut the UB lead to 49-33 at the media timeout.
• After Velasco's driving layup, Hempfling stole the ball, got it back from Sharps and knocked down a three-point try. BGSU had a 10-0 run, and the Falcons had cut the UB lead to just 11 points, at 49-38.
• But, Fair hit a long three-pointer on the next possession, and after the teams traded points over the next few minutes, Hemphill's three-point play gave the visitors a 59-43 lead after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• BG got a Brett layup and a Velasco pull-up jumper in the first two minutes of the final quarter, UB was scoring at the other end, and a step-back three-pointer by Fair gave the visitors a 20-point advantage, 67-47, with 7:33 to go.
• Hempfling hit a jumper, and after a pair of Hampton charity tosses, Velasco found Brett for a short-corner jumper. Then, after BG forced a miss, Hampton found Hempfling for a three-pointer that cut the UB lead to 11 points with 5:30 to go.
• Once again, however, Fair responded, hitting a triple to end BG's 9-0 run. Hampton drove the baseline and found Hempfling for a layup, but yet another triple by Fair gave the Bulls a 15-point lead, 73-58, with 4:22 on the clock.
• Camp was called for an intentional foul 14 seconds later, with Sharps hitting a pair of free throws, but BG could get no closer than that 13-point margin over the remaining four-plus minutes.
• Fair had 15 of UB's 23 fourth-quarter points.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• The Bulls shot 50.9 percent from the field on the night, and UB was 7-of-16 (43.8%) from three-point range.
• The Falcons shot 48.6% (17-of-35) in the second half, but it was not enough to offset a poor-shooting first half. BG shot 34.3% for the game, and the Falcons went 7-of-25 from the arc.
• UB shot 58.1% from the field in the first half, including 9-of-14 (64.3%) in the second quarter.

• BG had leads of 9-5 in second-chance points and 22-3 in bench scoring.
