THE OPENER
• The Falcons are 8-3 in home openers since the Stroh Center was built, and BGSU has won the home opener in each of the last five seasons. Head coach Robyn Fralick is a perfect 4-0 in home-opening contests since coming to BG.
ONE AND OH
• The Falcons began the 2022-23 season with a win, starting the season with a 1-0 record for the fourth consecutive season. BGSU downed St. Bonaventure, 77-61, in Western New York, with Elissa Brett and Allison Day combining for 45 points. BG forced the Bonnies into 29 turnovers in the game, and the Falcons had a 25-5 lead in points off turnovers.
A CAREER BEST FOR BRETT
• Fourth-year Falcon Elissa Brett scored 26 points, the highest total of her collegiate career, in the win at St. Bonaventure. Brett's previous career best was 22 points (on 2/2/22) at Northern Illinois.
A SUCCESSFUL DEBUT FOR DAY
• In her first game as a Falcon, Allison Day scored 19 points at SBU. She had 15 of those 19 points in the second half. Day was nearly unstoppable in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 of BGSU's first 14 points of the period. She was 6-of-8 from the floor in that quarter alone.
LEXI'S BACK!
• Lexi Fleming, after missing all of last season due to injury, made her return to the floor at St. Bonaventure, coming off the bench to play nearly 15 minutes and score four points. She had three rebounds and tied for the team lead with five fouls drawn.
• Not surprisingly (at least for Falcon fans), she also went into the second row of the stands chasing a loose ball, went careening into a table behind the basket after being fouled and hit the floor numerous other times.
• Fleming was the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year in 2020-21.
THE FALCONS – A QUICK OVERVIEW
• Head coach Robyn Fralick and her staff welcomed back a total of 10 student-athletes from last year's team. That group includes four starters from the 2021-22 season, plus a fifth player who started in 2020-21 before missing all of '21-22 due to injury.
• Last season, the Falcons – despite losing nearly 75 player-games to injury – won 17 games and advanced to national postseason play for the second-straight season. BGSU went 17-16 overall and 10-10 in Mid-American Conference play, and the Falcons were selected to participate in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI). BG went 2-1 in that tourney, finishing the '21-22 season with a victory.
• Kadie Hempfling returned for her fifth year with the Falcons after starting all 33 games last winter. Nyla Hampton and Amy Velasco made 32 and 30 starts, respectively, while Elissa Brett started 26 contests in 2021-22.
• BGSU's top-five scorers from a year ago – Hempfling (11.7 ppg), Velasco (10.8), Brett (10.7), Morgan Sharps (9.5) and Hampton (8.4) – all returned. Brett paced last year's team in rebounding (6.0 rpg), while Jocelyn Tate (6.3 ppg, 4.9 rpg) was second on the team in that category.
• Other returnees from last year's squad include Sophie Dziekan (2.5 ppg) and Olivia Hill (0.8 ppg).
• Jasmine Clerkley played in the first three games of '21-22 before missing the remainder of the season due to injury, while Lexi Fleming was injured prior to the start of the season and missed the entire '21-22 campaign.
• Fleming was a full-time starter in the 2020-21 season, when she was named MAC Freshman of the Year.
• Fleming, as mentioned earlier, made her return to the floor at St. Bonaventure, coming off the bench to play nearly 15 minutes and score four points.
• Five newcomers, including a pair of transfers, joined the 10 returnees. Allison Day played four seasons at Loyola Chicago, where she started 97 games and had totals of 1,139 points and 645 rebounds.
• Payton Moore is also in her first season with the Falcons, but her fifth as a collegian. Moore played in 78 games, starting 60, at Anderson (Ind.) University, where she had 1,111 career points along with 701 rebounds.
• Three freshman have joined the Falcons. That group includes Jasmine Fearne (Cairns, Australia), Emily Siesel (New Washington, Ohio) and Jaci Tubergen (Hudsonville, Mich.)
FALCONS FLOURISH UNDER FRALICK
• The Falcons have improved in a multitude of statistical categories since Robyn Fralick took over as head coach prior to the 2018-19 season.
• BGSU has been ranked among the top-40 teams in the nation in three-point field-goal percentage in each of Coach Fralick's first four seasons, after being ranked 174th the year before she & her staff arrived.
• The Falcons were among the bottom 10 teams in the nation in assists and assists per game in 2017-18, but have been ranked among the top 100 in both categories in each of Fralick's four years to date.
• BGSU was 302nd in the country (and last in the MAC) in field-goal pct. in 2017-18, but the Falcons have been ranked in the top 75 in each of the last three seasons.
• And, BG has been among the top 50 highest-scoring teams in the country in each of the last three years.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE RAIDERS
• Wright State is 0-1 on the young season. The Raiders will be playing a game in Northwest Ohio for the second-straight Monday, having opened the season with an 88-56 loss at Toledo. Makiya Miller had 14 points to pace three double-figure scorers against the Rockets.
• WSU's roster features 12 newcomers, including seven freshmen and five upperclass transfers. Head coach Kari Hoffman is in her second season at the helm of the Raiders. Last season, WSU went 4-19 overall and 3-14 in the Horizon League. Channing Chappell is the top returning scorer, having started all 23 games and averaged 6.7 ppg last winter. The Raiders were picked to finish 10th in the HL this season, according to the league's preseason poll.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Wright State, 4-3, in the all-time series, but the Raiders captured the most recent meeting. That matchup, however, came nearly 21 years ago, as WSU posted an 83-76 victory over the Falcons on Dec. 15, 2001. BGSU's last series win came nearly a year earlier, as the Falcons picked up a 56-52 road win (Dec. 16, 2000). The home team won the first five series matches – all between 1975 and 1982 – before the visiting team picked up victories in each of the last two contests. BGSU is 3-1 in home games (0-0 at the Stroh) and 1-2 in road contests vs. the Raiders over the years.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the Wright State game, the Falcons will hit the road for a pair of contests. BGSU will meet nationally-ranked Indiana on Thursday (Nov. 17), then will face Southern Indiana two days later (Saturday, Nov. 19).
• The Falcons will return home to meet Northern Kentucky on Wednesday, Nov. 23, with tipoff set for 2:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center. That match is scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+.
