Bowling Green Set To Battle Buffalo In MAC Tournament Monday Night

MUNCIE, IND. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball program will compete in the MAC Tournament on Monday night (Nov. 21) to continue a streak of seven straight seasons with an appearance in the tournament, dating back to the 2016 season. The Falcons will take on the Buffalo Bulls on Monday for a 7:00 p.m. start in the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament in Muncie, Ind. The Falcons closed out the regular season last Wednesday with a win over Miami (OH) to log the program's fourth consecutive 20-win season, finishing 20-9 over the course of the regular season.
The Falcons swept the Buffalo Bulls over two matches during the regular season. On Friday (Nov. 11), the Orange and Brown overcame a 2-0 deficit to win three straight sets to take the match in a 3-2 final. Yelianiz Torres matched her career-high for digs in a match while Petra Indrova added a double-double. As for Saturday (Nov. 12), Bowling Green completed the weekend sweep with a 3-0 victory. Three Falcons tallied nine kills, but none reached double-digits.
The all-time series between Bowling Green and Buffalo favors the Falcons with a record of 38-10 against the Bulls. Despite this being the 49th meeting between the two teams, it will mark the first neutral site matchup. The Falcons and Bulls have met twice previously in the MAC Tournament, coming in 2019 and 2008, but both matches were played in Bowling Green. In 2019, the Falcons won 3-0 while picking up a 3-1 win in 2008.
Battling Buffalo
The Buffalo Bulls will enter Monday's match after topping the Ohio Bobcats in the first round of the MAC Tournament in four sets. The Bulls worked to capture a 3-1 win in a match that saw each set settled by four points or less. During the regular season, Buffalo went 18-12, including a 10-8 showing within the Mid-American Conference. Buffalo finished out the regular season with a 3-0 win over Akron. The Bulls concluded the season with a record of 7-2 over their last nine matches with the only two losses coming against the Falcons on Nov. 11 and Nov. 12.
In their first match of the MAC Tournament, the Bulls were paced by Courtney Okwara with 16 kills. Katrin Trebichavska added a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs while landing four aces. Mandy Leigh set up the attack with 51 assists while her older sister Abby Leigh led the team in blocks with seven, consisting of three solos and four assists, in addition to 11 kills. The attack rounded out with 10 kills from Cali Assaley.
Indrova Back-To-Back MAC Player Of The Year
On Saturday (Nov. 19), the MAC announced awards for the 2022 season, including naming BGSU senior Petra Indrova the MAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Indrova is the third player in program history to win the award in back-to-back seasons and brings the BGSU tally to eight Player of the Year awards. Indrova was also named All-MAC First Team for the third straight season.
Hovey Earns Freshman Of The Year
In addition to Indrova's Player of the Year recognition, Lauryn Hovey became just the fourth Falcon in program history to be named the MAC Freshman of the Year. This season, Hovey tallied seven double-doubles as well as two triple-doubles on her way to the award. Hovey was also named All-MAC First-Team and MAC All-Freshman, joining Katelyn Meyer as the only players in program history to be named to both awards in the same season.
Andrews Collects Multiple Awards
It was a busy weekend for Jessica Andrews. On Friday (Nov. 18), the freshman middle blocker was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. As for Saturday (Nov. 19), Andrews was announced as All-MAC Second Team and MAC All-Freshman. Andrews joins Hovey in becoming the first pair of BGSU teammates to be named MAC All-Freshman in the same season.
Meyer Eyes Program-First Milestone
Earlier this season, fifth year senior Katelyn Meyer broke the program's all-time record for career attack attempts. Now, Meyer has a chance to reach a milestone for the first time in program history. Meyer will enter Monday with 4,983 career attack attempts, needing 17 to become the first player in program history with 5,000 career attack attempts. Meyer is also closing in on the all-time kills record, needing 28 kills to break the record.
