November 21, 2022 | Volleyball
MUNCIE, IND. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball program will compete in the MAC Championship on Tuesday (Nov. 22) to continue a streak of four consecutive trips to the championship match. The Falcons will take on the top-seeded Ball State Cardinals on Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. start. Bowling Green and Ball State have now met in the championship three times in the last four seasons. The Falcons advanced to the championship following a 3-0 sweep over Buffalo on Monday night (Nov. 21).
The Falcons and Cardinals met just once during the regular season, being back on Oct. 28 in the Stroh Center. Ball State took the match in a 3-0 final, one of just two home losses for Bowling Green this season. For the Orange and Brown, Lauryn Hovey led the way in the match with 16 kills while Jaden Walz contributed a double-double with 18 assists and 12 digs, both team-highs in the match. On the defensive side, Jessica Andrews logged a team-high five blocks.
The all-time series between Bowling Green and Ball State leans to the Cardinals with a record of 46-20-1. Ball State has come away with wins in the last three matchups between the two teams, but the last three victories for the Falcons have come in Muncie, Ind. The Orange and Brown tallied two 3-0 wins over the Cardinals in Muncie during the 2020-21 season. BGSU also registered a win in 2019, coming out of a five-set match with a 3-2 victory.
Familiar Foe
The Ball State Cardinals will enter the MAC Championship on Tuesday (Nov. 22) following a 3-1 win over Central Michigan on Monday (Nov. 21). The Cardinals came up short in a close first set, 25-23, but stormed back to take the second, third and fourth sets for the 3-1 win to advance to the championship round. The win marked the first of the season for the Cardinals against Central Michigan after the Chippewas swept the season series. Ball State will now compete in their third MAC Championship over the last four seasons and their second consecutive on their home floor.
In their first match of the MAC Tournament, the Cardinals were led by a three-headed monster on the attack with three players logging at least 15 kills. Cait Snyder paced the team with 21 kills while both Marie Plitt and Natalie Mitchem registered 15 over the four sets. Megan Wielonski set the attack with 54 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double. The digs column was topped by Maggie Huber with 30 while Natalie Risi added 14.
Falcons Efficient On The Attack
Bowling Green logged a .407 attack percentage in the semifinals match against Buffalo, the second-highest mark of the season. The highest mark for BGSU came in the match before, hitting .540 against Miami (OH) in the regular season finale. Over the last seven matches, the Falcons have hit at least .333 four times. Over those seven matches, Bowling Green is 7-0 and has hit a cumulative .317 while holding their opponent to a mark of .148. In total, the Falcons have registered an attack percentage of .300 or higher in six matches this season and hold a record of 6-0 in those matches.
Meyer Eyes Program-First Milestone
Earlier this season, fifth year senior Katelyn Meyer broke the program's all-time record for career attack attempts. Now, Meyer has a chance to reach a milestone for the first time in program history. After registering 16 attacks against Buffalo, Meyer enters with 4,999 career attack attempts, needing just one to become the first player in program history with 5,000 career attack attempts. Meyer is also closing in on the all-time kills record, needing 24 kills to break the record. Meyer's mark stands at 1,686 career kills and she needs to reach 1,710 to break the record and pass Tammy Schiller.
Torres Continues Trend
With 20 digs against Buffalo, Yelianiz Torres entered the Top 10 all-time for digs in a single season, tying for 10th with 537 digs this year. Torres' mark continued a trend during Coach Tomic's tenure at Bowling Green. Each season during the Tomic Era, the Falcons have added a name to the program's Top 10 list for single season digs. Torres now needs 22 to move up to ninth all-time. The 20-dig outing for Torres also marked her 12th 20-dig match of the season.
Hovey Adds To Impressive Freshman Campaign
After being named the MAC Freshman of the Year, Lauryn Hovey paced the Falcons attack against Buffalo in the semifinals round. Hovey landed a team-high 13 kills for the Falcons while registering a team-high, and career-high, .550 attack percentage. Hovey is just the fourth Falcon in program history to be named the MAC Freshman of the Year. Hovey was also named All-MAC First-Team and MAC All-Freshman, joining Katelyn Meyer as the only players in program history to be named to both awards in the same season.
