ONE THING YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE BGSU-UDM MATCHUP
• A BGSU Hall-of-Famer will be on the visiting team's bench on Monday night. Kate Achter, one of the top players in program history, is in her first season as head coach of the Titans. As a player (2004-08), Achter helped the Falcons to four MAC regular-season titles, three MAC Tournament crowns and four national postseason appearances. She helped the Orange and Brown go 108-23 overall and 57-7 in the MAC.
• Achter had 1,580 career points as a Falcon, and remains BGSU's all-time assists leader, with 688. The 2008 MAC Player of the Year, she was inducted into the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018, her first year of eligibility.
A SECOND THING YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE BGSU-UDM GAME
• Former Falcon Andrea Cecil is on the UDM staff, as director of operations. Cecil played three years at BGSU, scoring 891 points and earning All-MAC Third-Team honors as a junior in 2018-19. She missed the '19-20 season due to injury, then played two seasons at Florida Gulf Coast as a graduate transfer.
OK ... SINCE YOU ASKED, HERE'S A THIRD THING
• Prior to taking over at UDM, Kate Achter was head coach at Loyola Chicago for seven seasons. One of her top players was Allison Day, who had 1,139 points and 645 rebounds during four seasons with the Ramblers. Day was named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference team in each of her last two years on Achter's squad.
WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE
• The Falcons committed just seven turnovers in the home opener against Wright State, tied for the fourth-lowest single-game total in school history. The Falcons have turned the ball over 17 times or fewer in each of the five games so far, and BG is averaging 12.6 turnovers per game.
• Meanwhile, BGSU has forced the opponent into 18 or more turnovers in every game. Falcon foes are averaging 22.0 turnovers per contest.
• Through five games, the Falcons have outscored the opponents, 94-55, in points off turnovers.
THE FALCONS – A QUICK OVERVIEW
• The Falcons are 4-1 on the young season. BGSU posted double-digit wins over St. Bonaventure and Wright State, before falling to #9/12 Indiana, 96-61, on Thursday night (Nov. 17) in Bloomington. The Falcons bounced back with a 100-74 victory at Southern Indiana Saturday afternoon (Nov. 19).
• Most recently, BGSU returned home and downed Northern Kentucky, 76-68, on Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 23). Four Falcons scored in double digits in that win.
• Head coach Robyn Fralick and her staff welcomed back a total of 10 student-athletes from a year ago. That group includes four starters from the 2021-22 season, plus a fifth player who started in 2020-21 before missing all of '21-22 due to injury.
• Last season, the Falcons – despite losing nearly 75 player-games to injury – won 17 games and advanced to national postseason play for the second-straight season. BGSU went 17-16 overall and 10-10 in Mid-American Conference play, and the Falcons were selected to participate in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI). BG went 2-1 in that tourney, finishing the '21-22 season with a victory.
• Kadie Hempfling returned for her fifth year with the Falcons after starting all 33 games last winter. Nyla Hampton and Amy Velasco made 32 and 30 starts, respectively, while Elissa Brett started 26 contests in 2021-22.
• BGSU's top-five scorers from a year ago – Hempfling (11.7 ppg), Velasco (10.8), Brett (10.7), Morgan Sharps (9.5) and Hampton (8.4) – all returned. Brett paced last year's team in rebounding (6.0 rpg), while Jocelyn Tate (6.3 ppg, 4.9 rpg) was second on the team in that category.
• Other returnees from last year's squad include Sophie Dziekan (2.5 ppg) and Olivia Hill (0.8 ppg).
• Jasmine Clerkley played in the first three games of 2021-22 before missing the remainder of the season due to injury, while Lexi Fleming was injured prior to the start of the season and missed the entire '21-22 campaign.
• Fleming was a full-time starter in the 2020-21 season, when she was named MAC Freshman of the Year. She made her return to the floor in the '22-23 opener at St. Bonaventure, and has seen action off the bench in all four games this season.
• Five newcomers, including a pair of transfers, joined the 10 returnees. Allison Day played four seasons at Loyola Chicago, where she started 97 games and had totals of 1,139 points and 645 rebounds.
• Payton Moore is also in her first season with the Falcons, but her fifth as a collegian. Moore played in 78 games, starting 60, at Anderson (Ind.) University, where she had 1,111 career points along with 701 rebounds.
• Three freshman have joined the Falcons. That group includes Jasmine Fearne (Cairns, Australia), Emily Siesel (New Washington, Ohio) and Jaci Tubergen (Hudsonville, Mich.)
• Five games into the season, Brett leads the Falcons in both scoring and rebounding, with 15.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Day and Tate have 11.4 and 10.2 ppg, respectively, with each player averaging around five rebounds per game.
• Sharps has 9.4 ppg and has hit a team-leading 15 three-pointers. She is shooting 38.7 percent from the arc. Hampton has 9.0 ppg, and she leads the Falcons in steals (3.6 spg) and is second in assists (2.8 apg). Brett, Day, Hampton, Sharps and Tate each have started all four games this season.
• Fleming and Velasco have 7.0 and 6.8 ppg, respectively, with Dziekan averaging 6.2 points per contest. Fleming has scored her seven points in just 13.7 minutes per contest, while Velasco leads the Falcons with 3.0 apg. Dzieken is shooting 70% from the field, having gone 14-for-20 this year to date.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE TITANS
• Detroit Mercy is 1-3 on the young season. The Titans picked up a 70-65 win over Canisius on Nov. 13, but suffered a heartbreaking 65-63 loss to Northern Illinois on Tuesday (Nov. 22), falling on a shot at the buzzer.
• Amaya Burch leads the Titans with 15.3 points per game, and also has 7.0 rebounds per outing, while Irene Murua is averaging a double-double, with 10.5 ppg and 10.8 rpg.
• Head coach Kate Achter is in her first season with the Titans. UDM returned seven letterwinners, including three starters, from the 2021-22 team that went 1-29 overall and 1-21 in the Horizon League.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Detroit Mercy, 15-10, in the all-time series, and the Falcons have captured the last nine meetings. The teams' most recent matchup saw BGSU win a narrow 79-73 decision at the Stroh Center four years ago (Dec. 17, 2018). In that game, BGSU's Andrea Cecil – now a member of the UDM coaching staff – scored a then career-high 30 points, adding 11 rebounds. Cecil led the Falcons with 20 points in her only other game against the Titans, an 85-81 road win the previous season (Nov. 13, 2017). BGSU is 8-4 in home games (1-0 at the Stroh) and 7-6 in road contests vs. the Titans over the years.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the UDM game, the Falcons will take to the road for the next five contests, beginning with a Friday (Dec. 2) matchup at Valparaiso. BGSU's lone December game at the Stroh will be against Findlay on Friday, Dec. 30.
