Falcons Show Detroit No Mercy
November 28, 2022 | Women's Basketball
Dominant defensive effort includes second-quarter shutout in Monday's 76-29 win
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team displayed a dominant defensive effort on Monday evening (Nov. 28), topping the University of Detroit Mercy, 76-29, at the Stroh Center.
Lexi Fleming had 12 points to lead four double-digit scorers for the Falcons (5-1). Nyla Hampton and Morgan Sharps scored 11 points apiece, while Elissa Brett had 10.
The Falcons forced the Titans (1-4) into 32 turnovers on the night, and BGSU enjoyed a 36-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
BG pitched a shutout in the second quarter, outscoring the visitors by a 23-0 count to take a 43-11 halftime lead.
Monday's victory marked the first time in program history that the Falcons have allowed fewer than 30 points against an NCAA Division-I opponent.
Fleming and Hampton each had four steals, as the Falcons had 20 as a team. That team total was just one shy of the school record.
A few key notes from the victory...
• BGSU, as mentioned, held a Division-I foe to fewer than 30 points for the first time in program history. The Falcons have held the opponent under 30 points five times, with the other four such games coming against Wayne State (1973-74 season), Ohio Northern (in 1973-74 and again on Feb. 11, 1975) and Davis & Elkins (Dec. 30, 2018).
• The Falcon defense forced the Titans into 32 turnovers, tied for the second-highest total by a BGSU opponent in school history and just one shy of the school record.
• BGSU recorded a total of 20 steals, just one away from that school record.
• The 47-point win was tied for the ninth-largest margin of victory in school history, and was BG's largest in nearly 11 years.
• The Falcons held an opponent scoreless for an entire quarter for the first time in school history (NCAA women's basketball games have consisted of four 10-minute quarters since the 2015-16 season).
• BG allowed Detroit to just 11 points in the first half, tied for the third lowest single-half total by an opponent in program history.
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons burst out to an 8-0 lead. A Nyla Hampton steal on the game's first possession led to a Jocelyn Tate layup, and Elissa Brett scored the next two buckets. The latter hoop came after another Hampton steal, as the junior then found Brett for a transition layup. Brett's third bucket of the night came when she cut to the basket and took a Tate pass for another layup just over three minutes into the game.
• The Titans responded with a pair of buckets from Imani McNeal, before Lexi Fleming took Sophie Dziekan's pass and knocked down a three-point try. Just over a minute later, Fleming came up with a steal and hit an and-one layup. Her free throw out of a media timeout gave the Falcons a 14-6 lead.
• Allison Day and Amy Velasco each scored in the paint, and a Velasco steal led to a Hampton hoop and a 20-9 lead. Emma Trawally Porta's layup with eight seconds remaining in the first quarter cut the BG advantage to nine, but the Titans would not score again until the third period.
SECOND QUARTER
• In the second quarter, seven different players scored for the Falcons, who went 9-of-15 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, the BGSU defense forced the Titans to go 0-of-9 from the floor and commit nine turnovers.
• Tate found Morgan Sharps for a three-pointer on the first possession of the period, and Day's baby hook was followed by another Brett layup. BG's lead was 27-11 as the visitors used a timeout.
• But, the timeout could not slow the Falcons' momentum. Sharps hit a turnaround jumper, BGSU forced a shot-clock violation and Brett threw the ball inside for a Dziekan layup.
• Fleming grabbed a defensive rebound, Brett ran the floor and Velasco found the senior for a layup. Then, Hampton scored BGSU's final seven points of the period, with a steal and breakaway layup followed by a driving layup at the 1:56 mark. Another driving layup by the junior became a three-point play, the the successful free throw gave the Orange and Brown a 43-11 lead at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• Tate opened BGSU's second-half scoring by grabbing an offensive rebound, stepping outside the arc and hitting a corner three – the first three-point field goal of her Falcon career.
• McNeal got to the stripe and split a pair of shots, ending a 26-0 BG run and snapping UDM's scoreless drought at 21:40.
• Neither team scored for several minutes, before Hampton found Fleming for a fast-break layup and a 48-12 lead. Taylor Blunt hit a three-pointer for Detroit's first field goal in 23:51, but Fleming answered with a pair of free throws.
• A Dziekan layup gave BGSU a 52-17 lead, and after a Kadie Hempfling steal, Fleming did her best impression of former NBA great Earvin "Magic" Johnson, firing a one-handed pass from midcourt that split the defense and found Hampton for a transition layup. Hempfling's three-pointer gave the Falcons a 40-point lead just over halfway through the period, and BG's lead was 38 points after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Jasmine Fearne hit a step-back three-pointer just nine seconds into the fourth quarter, and after Trawally Porta scored inside, Sharps knocked down three-point tries on back-to-back possessions, with her second shot barely moving the net. Sharps then blocked a UDM shot before finding Jaci Tubergen for a transition layup and a 72-25 lead.
• Olivia Hill picked Maite Lara Garcia's pocket and immediately scored, and Fearne lobbed the ball inside to Jasmine Clerkley to give the Falcons a 51-point lead, 76-25, with 4:06 to go.
• Garcia's hook shot snapped a 12-0 BG run, before a pair of late free throws capped the scoring.
