QUOTING COACH ROBYN FRALICK
"This was a great opening-night team win. I loved our defensive tenacity and rebounding efforts. We have a lot of things to learn from and improve upon moving forward."
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons spotted the Bonnies three points on the game's opening possession, but the visitors then scored the game's next nine points in a span of just over two minutes. Jocelyn Tate fed Elissa Brett for a three-pointer, then scored herself on a driving layup. Layups by Brett and Allison Day prompted a timeout for the home team with under three minutes gone.
• Morgan Sharps answered a Bona triple with one of her own, but BG then went scoreless for more than five minutes. The hosts went on a 7-0 run, with a long-range shot by Nikki Oppenheimer giving SBU a 13-12 lead.
• Brett stopped that run with a pull-up jumper, and she then took an Olivia Hill pass and knocked down a shot from the arc. Breauna Ware's layup tied the score at 17-all after 10 minutes of play.
• Brett had 10 points in the opening quarter, and the Falcons had nine offensive rebounds, but BG shot just 7-of-23 (30.4%) from the floor.
SECOND QUARTER
• Nyla Hampton's defense allowed the Falcons to retake the lead. She had steals on each of SBU's first two possessions of the period. After the first one, Sharps found Hill for a transition layup. Then, Hampton picked Ware's pocket and went in all alone for a layup of her own and a 21-17 lead.
• I'yanna Lops hit a three-pointer, but Day banked a shot home, then kicked a pass out to Brett for a triple and a 26-22 advantage. A Brett layup and a pair of Hampton free throws gave the Falcons an eight-point lead.
• Oppenheimer, however, hit long-range shots on back-to-back possessions to cut that lead to two. But, Hampton hit a layup, and Sharps knocked down two shots from the stripe, then hit a long two-pointer. A Lexi Fleming free throw gave the Orange and Brown a 37-31 lead at the half.
THIRD QUARTER
• The teams got off to a slow-scoring start in the second half, but Day blocked SBU shots on back-to-back possessions, and each time, Amy Velasco found Tate for a layup on the ensuing trip down the floor. The latter layup gave BGSU a 42-33 lead.
• The hosts crept back within five points, but Brett hit a turnaround shot in the paint, then fed Sophie Dziekan for a reverse layup and a 46-38 lead midway through the period. After a Lops layup, Brett drove and scored, and Day powered her way inside for a bucket that increased the BG lead to double digits.
• Velasco's steal and bucket gave the Falcons an 11-point lead with just over a minute on the clock, and the visitors had a 55-45 advantage after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• SBU started quickly, scoring the first five points of the final quarter, but Day quickly countered with a layup, and a steal and layup by Fleming put BG on top, 59-50.
• Day hit a baby hook, then a second-chance layup. The latter bucket began a personal 6-0 run for the Loyola transfer, as Sharps found her running the floor in transition, before some nifty Fleming-to-Brett-to-Day ball movement resulted in an easy layup and a 67-54 lead with 5:31 to go.
• After an SBU timeout, Taylor Napper scored for the hosts, but Day connected again, and a Velasco layup with 3:32 on the clock gave the Orange and Brown a 71-56 advantage.Â
