MASK UP!
• EVERYONE in attendance at BGSU home games is required to wear a mask which covers the nose and mouth throughout their entire time inside the Stroh Center, except when actively eating or drinking, regardless of vaccination status. This includes fans, media (including radio, TV and web-stream broadcasters) and staff.
• If individuals are unwilling to wear masks, they are encouraged not to attend games in person for the sake of their health and the health of others. Additionally, fans and media should stay home if feeling ill, showing any symptoms of COVID-19, or think they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. Thanks in advance!
THE OPENING TIP – STREAKS, STORYLINES AND SIDEBARS
• The Falcons are coming off of a 77-67 win at Kent State on Monday night (Feb. 21). Nyla Hampton scored 12 of her career-high 23 points in the fourth quarter, while Kenzie Lewis had a season-high 11 points. Madisen Parker hit double digits for the second-straight game with a 10-point night vs. the Golden Flashes.
• BGSU entered Monday action in ninth place in the MAC standings with five games to go – not ideal, since only eight teams will make the conference tournament. The win over KSU, though, moved the Falcons into a four-way tie for sixth place. Entering Wednesday action, the fourth- through ninth-place teams are separated by just one-half game. Both Ball State and Ohio are 8-7 in the MAC, while four teams – BGSU, KSU, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan – are 8-8.
• BGSU is scheduled to play a lot of games during the year's shortest month. The Falcons are slated to play 10 games in a 25-day span during February. Wednesday's Akron contest wraps up a stretch of six games in just 12 days.
• For what it's worth, BGSU is now 9-3 in weekday games this season. The Falcons are 7-2 in such contests during MAC play (2-0 on Monday and 5-2 on Wednesday), and BG has won seven of the last eight weekday games.
• BGSU is 22-12 in MAC regular-season games since the start of the 2020-21 season, after going 8-46 in the previous three seasons (2017-18 to '19-20). That 22-12 record includes a 13-5 mark at the Stroh and a 9-7 ledger in league road games.
• Parker recently broke the school record for games played, and she is moving up another BGSU career list. Parker hit two three-point field goals vs. KSU on Monday, giving her a total of 236 in her career. She passed Tracy Pontius (235 treys from 2007-11) to move into third place on that BGSU list, and is just five triples behind second-place Sydney Lambert (241 from 2015-19).
• As a team, the Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in 544 consecutive games over the last 17 years. That is the fifth-longest active streak in the nation.
• Kadie Hempfling has started 114 career games at BGSU, and ranks seventh on that school list. If she remains in the starting lineup, she will move into the top-five in school history in that category by the end of the regular season.
• Hempfling is also ranked on the BGSU career lists for scoring (24th), rebounding (11th), assists (sixth) and three-pointers made (T-18th). Parker has broken into the top 40 on the BG career scoring chart, and currently is 35th.
• Entering Wednesday's game, Morgan Sharps leads the MAC – and is fourth in the nation – in three-point field-goal percentage. She has hit 46.8% of her long-distance shots this season.
• Lewis doesn't shoot the ball quite as often as her aforementioned teammates. But, she has made 13-of-17 shots (76.5%) from the floor over the last four games, and has averaged 7.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists in that span.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE ZIPS
• Akron is 13-9 on the season, and the Zips have a 10-6 record in MAC play, good for third place. UA had won four-straight games before suffering a narrow 69-66 loss to Ohio on Monday night. The Zips are 7-3 at home and 6-6 on the road this season. In conference play, UA is 5-3 in Akron and 5-3 at hostile venues.
• Jordyn Dawson leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, with 21.8 points and 9.8 boards per game. And, Dawson paces the Zips in both assists (4.0 apg) and steals (3.0 spg). Reagan Bass is also in double digits in scoring, at 12.0 ppg. Head coach Melissa Jackson welcomed back nine letterwinners from a 2020-21 club that went 7-14 overall and 4-14 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Akron, 57-12, in the all-time series, but UA captured this season's first meeting, a 79-69 decision in the Rubber City (Jan. 8, 2022). The Orange and Brown swept last season's matchups, including a 66-57 triumph at the Stroh Center (Jan. 20, 2021) and a 79-64 win on the road (Feb. 27, 2021). BGSU is 30-4 in home games, 25-28 in road contests and 2-0 in neutral-site affairs vs. UA over the years.
• More information on the BGSU-Akron series can be found on page 24 of the PDF version of these very notes.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the Akron contest, the Falcons return to the road to take on Miami on Saturday (Feb. 26). That game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. tip at Millett Hall.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will close the home portion of the regular-season schedule with a Wednesday (March 2) contest vs. Kent State at the Stroh. BGSU's remaining regular-season schedule follows.
