February 24, 2022 | Volleyball
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After being named 2021 MAC Defensive Player of the Year, Bowling Green's Julia Walz has been invited to the 2022 USA Volleyball Women's National Team Open Program (WNTOP). The program will be held from Friday, Feb. 25, to Sunday, Feb. 27, at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Formerly known as the Open Tryout, the WNTOP is a part of the selection process for the U.S. Women's National Team, NCAA Elite Athlete List, and 2022 Collegiate National Team. Walz, a libero from Brooklyn, Ohio, is the lone participant from the Mid-American Conference.
Walz was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year after a campaign that featured 571 digs, the seventh-highest single-season mark in program history. Her season average of 5.24 digs per set ranked sixth in program history and 16th in the NCAA. She eclipsed 1,500 career digs while earning MAC East
Defensive Player of the Week seven times.
Walz helped the Falcons to their third consecutive MAC East title, as well as their third straight appearance in the MAC Championship. Bowling Green finished with a 21-9 overall record and a 10-0 record at home, the second perfect home season in program history.

Coach Tomic's Take
"We are excited for Julia to have this excellent opportunity to train and compete with the top collegiate players at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Julia has earned this opportunity with her outstanding performances on the court last season, for which she was recognized as the MAC Defensive Player of the Year. I have no doubt she will represent Bowling Green State University, BGSU Volleyball, and the MAC well."
