STORY TIME
• This week's BGSU road swing bears a passing resemblance to a trip the Falcons took 11 years ago. On Jan. 31, 2011, the Falcons left for a game at NIU. BG picked up a win over the Huskies, then returned to the hotel as the trip wound up taking much longer than expected. In 2022, the Falcons also had an extended stay in DeKalb before getting ready for a game vs. Ball State. More information is available on page 3 of the PDF version of these notes.
THE OPENING TIP – STREAKS, STORYLINES AND SIDEBARS
• BGSU begins the month of February with three road games in a four-game stretch. All told, the Falcons are scheduled to play 10 games in a 25-day span during the calendar year's shortest month.
• The Falcons started that busy February stretch with a 64-54 win at Northern Illinois on Wednesday night (Feb. 2). Junior Elissa Brett led the way with a career-high 22 points, and a host of her teammates made key plays down the stretch as BGSU ended the game on a 12-1 run.
• BGSU has won three of the last four games, with the only loss in that time a four-point setback, 71-67, vs. first-place Toledo on Saturday (Jan. 29). Freshman Amy Velasco scored 21 points, the highest total of her young career, in her first-ever 'Battle of I-75.'
• Senior Kadie Hempfling, who scored the 1,000th point of her career in last Wednesday's (Jan. 26) win over Western Michigan, reached yet another milestone three days later, pulling down her 700th rebound as a Falcon in the UT game.
• In the NIU game, Velasco – scoreless to that point – made the tying and go-ahead free throws with just 1:18 left to begin BG's 12-1 run. Hempfling – who had not made a field goal to that point – took a Velasco pass and knocked down a three-pointer with 52.5 seconds left, putting BGSU up by four.
• BGSU is now 19-8 in MAC regular-season games since the start of the 2020-21 season, after going 8-46 in the previous three seasons (2017-18 to '19-20). That 19-8 record includes an 11-4 mark at the Stroh and an 8-4 ledger in league road games.
• Madisen Parker has made a total of 226 three-point field goals in her career, good for fourth place on that BGSU list. Parker's next target is Tracy Pontius (2007-11), who hit 235 treys in her storied Falcon career.
• Parker is on pace to tie a school record on Saturday at Ball State. She has played in a total of 134 games as a Falcon, just one shy of the BGSU mark. Should BG's current schedule hold and she sees action in each game, Parker would tie that BGSU record on Saturday and break it on Wednesday (Feb. 9) vs. Northern Illinois at the Stroh.
• Hempfling has now started 107 career games at BGSU, tying her for eighth place on that school list. She has a shot to move into the top-five in school history in that category by the end of the regular season.
• Hempfling is also ranked on the BGSU career lists for scoring (28th), rebounding (12th) and assists (sixth). Parker has broken into the top 40 on the BG career scoring chart.
• Through Wednesday's game, Morgan Sharps leads the MAC – and is tied for second in the nation – in three-point field-goal percentage. She has hit 47.4% of her long-distance shots this season.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE CARDINALS
• Ball State is 13-7 on the season, and the Cardinals are 6-4 in MAC play. BSU enters Saturday's contest riding a four-game winning streak, including impressive road wins over Buffalo (72-70) and Ohio (84-74) on the last two Wednesdays. The Cards are 6-3 at home, 6-2 on the road and 1-2 at neutral sites to date. In MAC play, BSU is 2-2 in Muncie and 4-2 in hostile venues.
• Anna Clephane leads the team in scoring, with 16.2 points per game, but has missed the last seven games due to injury. Thelma Dis Agustsdottir and Sydney Freeman have 11.1 and 10.3 ppg, respectively, while Ally Becki has 9.8 ppg. Becki has averaged 22.3 points over the last three games, with 19 in a win over Miami, 21 at Buffalo and 27 at Ohio. Head coach Brady Sallee welcomed back eight letterwinners, including four starters, from a 2020-21 club that went 14-11 overall and 12-8 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Ball State, 46-24, in the all-time series, and BGSU has captured the last two meetings. In this season's first matchup, the Falcons picked up an 82-58 win on New Year's Day at the Stroh Center. BG posted an 89-55 win in Muncie (Jan. 2, 2021) in last season's lone meeting, snapping BSU's 10-game series winning streak. BGSU is 25-7 in home games, 19-14 in road contests and 2-3 in neutral-site events vs. the Cardinals over the years.
• More information on the BGSU-Ball State series can be found on page 21 of the PDF version of these very notes.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the BSU game, the Falcons return home for the second meeting with Northern Illinois in as many Wednesdays. BGSU hosts the Huskies (Feb. 9) in a 7:00 p.m. start at the Stroh.
• Then, BGSU faces Toledo for the second time in two weeks, heading to the Glass City for a Saturday afternoon (Feb. 12) matchup with the Rockets. The schedule currently calls for BGSU to play 10 games, including six on the road, during February. Barring any (more) schedule changes, BG's upcoming schedule is as follows...
