THE OPENING TIP – STREAKS, STORYLINES AND SIDEBARS
• The Falcons picked up an 81-76 win at Miami on Saturday (Feb. 26). Amy Velasco had 19 points and five assists to lead the Orange and Brown in both categories. Velasco went 10-of-12 at the free-throw line, including 7-for-8 over the game's final three minutes. Kadie Hempfling had 18 points vs. the RedHawks.
• BGSU went 2-1 last week, with a pair of road wins sandwiched around a last-second loss. On Wednesday, Hempfling exploded for a career-high 29 points, and Velasco hit a layup to tie the game with 10.5 seconds to go. But, after an Akron three-point try clanged off of the left side of the rim, Jordan Dawson's putback with 1.2 seconds remaining gave the visitors the victory.
• The UA game was BG's sixth in a 12-day span. Two nights earlier (Feb. 21), Nyla Hampton scored 12 of her career-high 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Falcons picked up a 77-67 win in the first meeting with KSU.
• BGSU is 23-13 in MAC regular-season games since the start of the 2020-21 season, after going 8-46 in the previous three seasons (2017-18 to '19-20). That 23-13 record includes a 13-6 mark at the Stroh and a 10-7 ledger in league road games.
• With two games left in the regular season, BGSU has moved into a three-way tie for sixth place in the MAC standings. The top-eight teams will qualify for the conference tournament. Currently, the fourth- through ninth-place teams are separated by just a game and a half. Fourth-place Northern Illinois is 10-8 in league play, while Ball State is 9-8, three teams (BGSU, KSU and Western Michigan) are 9-9 and Ohio is 8-9.
• For what it's worth, Wednesday's KSU game will mark the third time this season that the Falcons have faced an opponent twice in less than two weeks. BGSU played Northern Illinois twice in eight days, and faced Miami two times in a 13-day span. The Orange and Brown went 2-0 against both the Huskies and RedHawks. And, as mentioned, BG won the first meeting with the Flashes, 77-67, last Monday (Feb. 21).
• Another note from the "For What It's Worth" column: , BG is 9-4 in weekday games this season. The Falcons are 7-3 in such contests during MAC play (2-0 on Monday and 5-3 on Wednesday), and BGSU has won seven of the last nine weekday games.
• Kenzie Lewis had a season-high 11 points at Kent State, then scored 10 points (while adding a BGSU season-high 14 rebounds) two nights later vs. Akron. Lewis has been contributing in multiple ways all season long, but has stepped up her shooting – and her scoring – in recent weeks. She has made 17-of-23 shots (73.9%) from the floor over the last six games.
• Madisen Parker recently broke the school record for games played, and she is moving up another BGSU career list. Parker has hit 240 three-point field goals in her career. She recently passed Tracy Pontius (235 treys from 2007-11) to move into third place on that BG list, and is just one triple behind second-place Sydney Lambert (241 from 2015-19).
• As a team, the Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in 546 consecutive games over the last 17 years. That is the fifth-longest active streak in the nation.
• Hempfling has started 116 career games at BGSU, and is now sixth on that school list. If she remains in the starting lineup, she will move into the top-five in school history in that category by the end of the regular season.
• Hempfling is also ranked on the BGSU career lists for scoring (23rd), rebounding (T-10th), assists (sixth) and three-pointers made (T-15th). Parker recently broke into the top 40 on the BG career scoring chart, and currently is 31st.
• Entering Wednesday's game, Morgan Sharps leads the MAC – and is eighth in the nation – in three-point field-goal percentage. She has hit 44.6% of her long-distance shots this season.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE GOLDEN FLASHES
• Kent State is 17-10 on the season, and the Golden Flashes have a 9-9 record in MAC play. KSU won at Miami last Wednesday before dropping an 82-64 decision to visiting Buffalo over the weekend. The Flashes are 9-4 at home, 6-5 on the road and 2-1 at neutral sites this season. In conference play, KSU is 5-4 in Kent and 4-5 at hostile venues.
• Katie Shumate leads the team in scoring, with 12.5 points per game. She paces a balanced attack which includes four players averaging at least 10.6 ppg. One of those four, Nila Blackford, has 11.3 ppg and a KSU-best 9.3 rebounds per contest. Head coach Todd Starkey welcomed back nine letterwinners, including all five starters, from a 2020-21 club that went 11-9 overall and 10-6 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Kent State, 59-37, in the all-time series, and BGSU has captured the last three meetings following last week's (Feb. 21) 77-67 decision in Kent. The Orange and Brown swept last season's matchups, including an 82-65 triumph at the Stroh Center (March 3, 2022). Prior to that, the teams' last two meetings each had required overtime, including last year's contest at the M.A.C. Center, an 80-79 BGSU win (Feb. 10, 2021). BGSU is 29-13 in home games, 23-22 in road contests and 7-2 in neutral-site affairs vs. KSU over the years.

DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the KSU contest, the Falcons wrap up the regular-season schedule with a trip to Western New York. BGSU faces Buffalo on Saturday (March 5), with tipoff at 2:00 p.m. at Alumni Arena. Then, the Falcons hope to be among the eight teams that head to Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in downtown Cleveland for the MAC Tournament (March 9-12).
