BGSU ends home schedule with 69-60 win over KSU
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Freshman Jocelyn Tate scored a career-high 19 points and keyed a 14-0 run, helping the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to a 69-60 win over Kent State University on Wednesday night (March 2). The Mid-American Conference contest was held at the Stroh Center
With the win, the Falcons (15-13, 10-9 MAC) have clinched a spot in the MAC Tournament.
Tate went 9-of-13 from the field, posting career-high totals for both field goals made and attempted. Sophomore Nyla Hampton had 15 points along with game-high totals of five assists and five steals, while freshman Amy Velasco and junior Elissa Brett added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Lindsey Thall scored a game-high 22 points for the Golden Flashes (17-11, 9-10 MAC).
Trailing by a 23-21 score midway through the second quarter, the Falcons proceeded to go on a 14-0 run, holding the Flashes scoreless for nearly four minutes. Tate scored nine of the Falcons' 14 points during that stretch, with her final bucket giving the hosts a 35-23 lead.
KSU cut that lead to six points at the half, and got within two points on two occasions in the third quarter. But, only once in the second half did KSU have the ball in a one-possession game, and that possession ended with a BGSU steal.
After Thall's layup cut BGSU's lead to 60-56 with 5:56 to go, the Flashes did not make another field goal until only 32 seconds remained.
With one game left in the regular season, the Falcons are tied for fifth place, just a half game out of fourth.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• The Falcons are part of a three-way tie for fifth place in the MAC standings, and BGSU has clinched a top-eight finish and a trip to the conference tournament.
• The fourth- through ninth-place teams are separated by just a game and a half. Fourth-place Ball State is 10-8 in conference play, while three teams – BGSU, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan – are 10-9. Ohio is now 9-9 and KSU 9-10.
• BG still has an outside chance of finishing as high as fourth place, but the Falcons can be no worse than the eighth seed.
• BGSU is a half-game ahead of Ohio and one game ahead of KSU, and the Flashes host the Bobcats on Saturday, meaning one of those teams will lose.
• For a slightly more detailed list of tournament scenarios, check back to BGSUFalcons.com on Friday morning (March 4).
BONUS NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• Senior Madisen Parker went 2-of-3 from three-point range on Wednesday night, giving her a total of 242 successful triples in her stellar career. She has moved into second place on that list, passing Sydney Lambert (241 treys from 2015-19). Lambert, a member of BGSU's Athletics Marketing team, was in the building on Wednesday night.
• Parker will end her career trailing only the legendary Lauren Prochaska, a member of the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame induction class of 2022. Prochaska made a total of 310 three-point field goals in her storied career.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"It was a great win. We knew it was going to be our last game at the Stroh this season, and the Stroh was rockin'. Our fans were awesome, and it was really a special game."
"It felt like March. It felt like every possession was the most important possession of the year, and I was pleased that we gutted out a win against a good team."
"Jocelyn Tate was spectacular, obviously. She was just a huge catalyst for us tonight. Jocelyn gave us a lot of momentum tonight, but our whole team played really tough, and found a way to grind out a win."
FIRST QUARTER
• Elissa Brett gave the Falcons the lead on a baseline drive with just over a minute gone, but the Flashes answered with a pair of layups over the next 45 seconds. Neither team made a bucket for the next few minutes, until Hannah Young knocked down the first three-pointer of the game at the 5:42 mark.
• Jocelyn Tate answered with a layup after a nifty change of direction, and after Amy Velasco grabbed a defensive rebound and found Brett for a three-pointer, the Falcons had an 11-8 lead.
• Lindsey Thall answered from outside the arc, but a Kenzie Lewis 'extra pass' found Nyla Hampton for a layup, and Hampton found Morgan Sharps for a triple and a 16-11 lead. Bridget Dunn's trifecta got the Flashes within two points after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• KSU scored the first five points of the period, with another Dunn triple completing an 8-0 run and giving the visitors a 19-16 lead. Hampton found Tate for a quick layup, then spotted Madisen Parker outside the arc for a left-wing three-pointer and a 21-19 BGSU lead.
• Nila Blackford scored the game's next four points, before a BGSU possession that was seemingly going nowhere ended in a three-pointer and sparked a 14-point run. After several near-turnovers, Lewis saved the ball from going out of bounds and found Hampton for a triple and a 24-23 lead at the 5:22 mark.
• Then, Tate stole the ball and traded passes with Hampton on a two-on-one break. Their nifty give-and-go resulted in a Tate layup.
• BG forced a miss, and the Falcons were off and running again, as Brett grabbed the rebound and found Tate, who raced downcourt and hit an and-one layup. Out of the media timeout, the freshman completed the three-point play for a 29-23 lead.
• KSU missed a shot, with a long rebound caroming toward the press-row table across from the BG bench. A KSU player attempted to save the ball, but threw it in the area of Tate, who was off and running once again. Her layup gave the Falcons an eight-point advantage, and after Brett drew a charge against Blackford, the junior's baseline drive put BG ahead by double digits.
• Lewis found Tate for a short floater, and the Falcons had a 12-point lead – the largest of the game – with 2:06 left before the half. Casey Santoro's three-point play ended BG's 14-0 run, and Thall followed with a long-distance make as KSU ended the half on an 8-2 run of their own.
THIRD QUARTER
• Neither team scored for a span of two-and-a-half minutes to begin the second half, before Velasco hit a jumper in the paint. Thall scored four-straight points for the visitors before Tate found Velasco for a triple.
• Velasco would score BG's first seven points of the quarter, with her driving layup giving the Falcons a 44-37 lead, but a Santoro layup began a 7-2 run for the visitors, as after a Kadie Hempfling hoop, Thall hit a three-pointer to make it a 46-44 game at the 2:51 mark.
• Parker drained a long-distance shot on BG's next possession, after Hempfling grabbed an offensive board and kicked the ball out to her fellow senior. But, Thall knocked down another triple try. Brett made a free throw, and Tate hit a contested jumper, before Clare Kelly's layup cut the Falcon lead to 52-49. Velasco answered with a pair of free throws, and BG wound up leading by four after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• A nifty pass by Sophie Dziekan led to a Brett layup that began the fourth-quarter scoring, and after Blackford answered for the Flashes, Dziekan found Tate for a floater and a 58-52 lead.
• KSU cut the lead to four points on three more occasions over the next few minutes, but BGSU answered each time, with Hampton making a nifty crossover move and going in for a layup, then ripping the ball away from Thall, heading downcourt and pulling up for a foul-line jumper. After two Mariah Modkins charity tosses, Tate snapped a scoreless stretch of over two minutes with a driving layup. BGSU led, 64-58, with two minutes to go.
• The Falcons got back-to-back stops, and after the first, a Brett offensive rebound with four KSU players around her allowed the hosts to work some clock. BG wound up scoreless on the possession, but by the time the Flashes got the ball back, less than a minute remained. Then, Brett rebounded a missed shot, and Velasco was fouled with 38.5 seconds left. She hit both shots for a 66-58 BG lead.
• Katie Shumate scored for the visitors, but the Falcons then broke KSU's press, and Hampton was fouled, sinking two shots from the stripe with 22.8 seconds to go. After another KSU miss, Velasco's final charity toss provided the final margin.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• BGSU shot 45.5 percent from the field, while KSU shot 42.1% on the evening. The Falcons were 6-of-19 from three-point range (31.6%), with the Flashes going 7-of-25 (28%) from the arc.
• KSU had a slim 35-32 lead on the boards, but the Falcons were 13-of-17 (.76.5%) at the free-throw line, compared to a 5-of-8 (62.5%) effort from the visitors.
• Tate, as mentioned, scored a career-high 19 points, going 9-of-13 from the floor. She added five boards, an assist and a pair of steals, and led all players with a plus/minus rating of +20.
• Hampton, who had a career-high 23 points in BG's win at KSU last Monday (Feb. 21), had 15 points and led all players with five assists and five steals in the return match with the Flashes.
• Velasco scored 13 points and went 6-of-8 from the line, helping salt away the win at the stripe for the second-straight game. She was 10-of-12 at the line in BG's victory at Miami on Saturday (Feb. 26).
• Brett had 11 points, and just missed a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds.
• Thall led all players with 22 points, and Young joined her in double digits with 10 points for the Golden Flashes.
• BGSU forced KSU into 19 turnovers while committing 12 themselves. The Falcons had narrow advantages in points off turnovers and points in the paint, and BG had a 14-1 lead in fast-break points and a 28-18 margin in bench scoring.
