FIRST THINGS FIRST: THE FALCONS AND THE MAC TOURNAMENT SCENARIOS
• BGSU closed the home portion of the schedule with a 69-60 win over Kent State at the Stroh Center on Wednesday night (March 2). In the process, the Falcons clinched a top-eight finish and a berth in the MAC Tournament. A few notes about BG's tourney possibilities...
• BGSU has an outside chance to finish as high as fourth, with a win at Buffalo and a Ball State loss to Eastern Michigan. In such a case, the Falcons would move past the Cardinals. It is possible for Northern Illinois and/or Western Michigan to be tied for fourth with BG, but the Falcons would win any and all tiebreakers. BGSU swept the two head-to-head meetings with NIU, and the Falcons went 1-1 vs. WMU, but in this case the BGSU-WMU tie would be broken by virtue of BG's win over UB.
• A Buffalo win on Saturday would mean that BGSU could finish anywhere between fifth and eighth, depending upon other outcomes around the league. Kent State hosts Ohio on Saturday, and regardless of all other results, BGSU will still finish ahead of the loser of that KSU-Ohio game.
• Should KSU defeat Ohio, the Falcons – even with a loss at UB – would be a half-game ahead of Ohio. BGSU would be tied with KSU, but the Falcons swept the Flashes in their two meetings.
• If Ohio defeats KSU, the Falcons would finish no worse than a game ahead of the Flashes.
THE OPENING TIP – STREAKS, STORYLINES AND SIDEBARS
• The Falcons have won two-straight games for the first time since late January, following Wednesday night's (March 2) 69-60 win over Kent State at the Stroh Center. Freshman Jocelyn Tate scored a career-high 19 points and keyed a 14-0 second-quarter run that gave BGSU the lead for good. Sophomore Nyla Hampton, who had a career-high 23 points in the first KSU meeting (Feb. 21), had 15 points along with game-high totals of five assists and five steals on Wednesday.
• The KSU contest came four days after the Falcons picked up an 81-76 win at Miami (Feb. 26). In that win, freshman Amy Velasco had 19 points and five assists to lead the Orange and Brown in both categories. Velasco went 10-of-12 at the free-throw line, including 7-for-8 over the game's final three minutes. Kadie Hempfling had 18 points vs. the RedHawks.
• BGSU has won three of the last four games, with a last-second loss to Akron (Feb. 23) the only setback in that time. In that UA contest at the Stroh, Hempfling exploded for a career-high 29 points, and Velasco hit a layup to tie the game with 10.5 seconds to go. But, after a UA three-point try clanged off of the left side of the rim, Jordan Dawson's putback with 1.2 seconds to go gave the visitors the victory.
• BGSU is 24-13 in MAC regular-season games since the start of the 2020-21 season, after going 8-46 in the previous three seasons (2017-18 to '19-20). That 24-13 record includes a 14-6 mark at the Stroh and a 10-7 ledger in league road games.
• With just one game left in the regular season, BGSU has moved into a three-way tie for fifth place in the MAC standings. Currently, the fourth- through ninth-place teams are separated by just a game and a half. Fourth-place Ball State is 10-8 in league play, while three teams (BGSU, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan) are 10-9, Ohio 9-9 and KSU 9-10.
• For what it's worth, Wednesday's KSU game marked the third time this season that the Falcons have faced an opponent twice in less than two weeks, and BGSU went 6-0 in those games. The Falcons played Northern Illinois twice in eight days, met KSU two times in nine days and faced Miami twice in a 13-day span, sweeping them all.
• Another note from the "For What It's Worth" column: , BG is now 10-4 in weekday games this season. The Falcons went 8-3 in such contests during MAC play (2-0 on Monday and 6-3 on Wednesday), and BGSU has won eight of the last 10 weekday games.
• Madisen Parker recently broke the school record for games played, and she is moving up another BGSU list. Parker has hit 242 three-point field goals in her career, and has moved into second place on that BG career chart.
• As a team, the Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in 547 consecutive games over the last 17 years. That is the fifth-longest active streak in the nation.
• Hempfling has started 117 career games, and is now sixth on that BGSU list. If she is in the starting lineup on Saturday at UB, she will move into a tie for fifth in school history.
• Hempfling is also ranked on the BGSU career lists for scoring (23rd), rebounding (10th), assists (sixth) and three-pointers made (T-15th). Parker recently broke into the top 40 on the BG career scoring chart, and currently is 31st.
• Entering Wednesday's game, Morgan Sharps leads the MAC – and is seventh in the nation – in three-point field-goal percentage. She has hit 44.7% of her long-distance shots this season.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE BULLS
• Buffalo is 21-8 on the season, and the Bulls have a 15-4 record in MAC play, good for second place. UB has won five-straight games and 10 of the last 11 contests, with the only loss during that time coming in overtime. Most recently, UB recorded an emphatic 86-60 win on the road vs. third-place Akron Wednesday night. The Bulls are 13-1 at home, 7-5 on the road and 1-2 at neutral sites this season. In conference play, UB is 8-1 in Buffalo and went 7-3 at hostile venues.
• Dyaisha Fair leads the team and is fourth in the nation in scoring, with 23.9 points per game. Fair also leads the MAC in field goals made and attempted, minutes played and three-pointers made and attempted. Fair leads the team in assists, with 4.2 per game. Georgia Woolley and Summer Hemphill are scoring in double digits, with 14.0 and 13.7 ppg, respectively, and Hemphill has a team-high 10.1 rebounds per game. Head coach Felisha Legette-Jack welcomed back nine letterwinners, including four starters, from a 2020-21 club that went 15-9 overall and 11-6 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Buffalo, 27-20, in the all-time series, but UB captured this season's first meeting, with an 82-66 triumph at the Stroh two months ago (Jan. 5, 2022). Last season the Bulls swept the two regular-season matchups, including an 82-74 victory in the last meeting at Alumni Arena (Jan. 13, 2021), but the Falcons downed UB by an 80-67 count in the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament (March 12, 2021). BGSU is 12-9 in home games, 13-11 in road contests and 2-0 in neutral-site affairs vs. UB over the years.
• More information on the BGSU-UB series can be found on page 24.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the UB contest, the Falcons will head to Cleveland for the MAC Tournament. The quarterfinals are set for Wednesday (March 9) at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
