CLEVELAND, Ohio – Bowling Green State University baseball student-athlete Kyle Gurney was named the MAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, as announced by the Mid-American Conference on Wednesday (April 6).
Gurney, a junior from Belleville, Mich. (Divine Child) put together a strong performance at the plate for the Falcons last week as BGSU went 4-1, including a win over Big 10 foe Michigan State. Gurney began the week with two RBI in the Falcons' 12-3 victory against the Spartans on Tuesday (March 29) before adding another two hits in the first game of a four-game series against Akron.
The hot streak continued through the series against Akron for Gurney. In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader (April 2), he had two hits and two RBI, including a home run. That momentum carried into the second game of the doubleheader, hitting another two home runs to total four RBI in the contest. In the final game of the series on Sunday (April 3), Gurney racked up another homer, a double, and three more RBI. Over the course of the week, Gurney logged a .429 batting average and 1.048 slugging percentage while belting four home runs, 11 RBI and 22 total bases over the five games.
