2012 MAC Volleyball Champions To Be Recognized At Saturday's Homecoming Football Game

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The 2012 Bowling Green State University volleyball team put together a historic season for the program. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Danijela Tomic, the Falcons captured the MAC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the program's second of now three NCAA appearances, as well as winning the program's first match in the NCAA Tournament.
The 2012 squad went 22-11 during the regular season with a 13-3 standing within the Mid-American Conference, including a win streak of nine straight matches. The Falcons were able to overcome an 0-2 deficit in the MAC Championship against Northern Illinois, winning the final three sets, including the third set in extra points. In the NCAA Tournament, BGSU went five sets once again, facing Yale in the first round, to register the program's first NCAA victory. The Falcons run came to a close in the second round against No. 1 Penn State.
During the 2012 season, Paige Penrod set the program record for attack attempts in a single season, logging 1,436 for the Falcons. Penrod landed 491 kills that season, the eighth-most for a single season in program history. The offense was paced by Laura Avila's 1,333 assists, the third-most for a single season in program history.
The Orange and Brown were strong at the net as well with Kaitlyn Skinner producing 136 block assists, which was second in program history for a single season at the time and is now third all-time. The top performances carried into digs with Ashley Dunn logging 568. At the time, that stood third all-time and is now eighth in the record books for a single season.
Following the season, three Falcons were named First Team All-MAC, being Lindsey Butterfield, Paige Penrod and Danielle Tonyan. Penrod and Butterfield were also named to the MAC All-Tournament Team with Penrod being named MVP. As for Butterfield, her accolades continued with being named First Team Capital One Academic All-District.
In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Title IX and the 10th Anniversary of the MAC Championship season, the 2012 MAC Volleyball Champion Falcons will be recognized at Saturday's (Sept. 17) Homecoming football game against Marshall. The recognition will be during the first quarter of the game. Tickets for the game can be purchased here.
