FASCINATING FALCON FACTS
• The Falcons are 2-3-3 on the season. BGSU fell, 1-0, to Western Michigan in Tuesday night's (Sept. 27) MAC opener at Cochrane Stadium.
• Prior to the WMU setback, the Falcons scored nine goals in a two-match span. The Falcons downed Air Force by a 3-1 count on the road (Sept. 17) before posting a 6-0 win over visiting Oakland last weekend (Sept. 23).
• Alberto Anaya exploded for a seven-point night in the Oakland match. He was involved in the scoring of five of BGSU's six goals, scoring the first two (just 2:23 apart) and assisting on all three second-half markers.
• Anaya's total of seven points was the highest by a Falcon since 2014, and was the highest against an NCAA Division-I opponent since 1989.
• Sergi Martinez had a three-point night, with a goal and an assist vs. the Golden Grizzlies. Kyle Cusimano had three points in the win at Air Force, scoring BGSU's first goal and assisting on the third.
• Brendan Graves made three saves in the win over Oakland to earn his third clean sheet of the season.
• BGSU has allowed just five goals in eight games this year. The Falcons have not surrendered a first-half goal. In fact, BG has not given up a goal in the first 65 minutes of a match in 2022 to date.
• No fewer than seven of this year's eight games have been scoreless at the half, with the lone exception being the Oakland contest.
• All three of BGSU's losses – to Loyola (Ill.), Ohio State and Western Michigan – have come by identical 1-0 scores.
• In the Falcons' three draws – scoreless ties at DePaul and Michigan and a 1-1 home outcome vs. Michigan State – BGSU outshot the opponents by a combined total of 59-20. The Falcons had 17 shots on goal, compared to eight for those three opponents.
A FEW MORE NOTES FROM THE OAKLAND MATCH
• The Falcons' six-goal output was the team's highest in over eight years, since an 8-0 win over Findlay at Cochrane on Sept. 2, 2014.
• Alberto Anaya's total of seven points vs. the Golden Grizzlies was the highest by a Falcon since that same Findlay match, when Pat Flynn tied the school record with 11 points. And, Anaya's total was the highest by a BG player against a Division-I opponent since a Sept. 20, 1989 win over Eastern Michigan.
• Anaya became the first Falcon with three assists in a match in nearly nine years, since Danny Baraldi had three helpers against Purdue Fort Wayne (then IPFW) on Nov. 5, 2013.
• Anaya fell just one assist short of tying the school single-game record. Brian Ferguson had four assists in that 1989 win over Eastern Michigan.
• And, Anaya had the first two-goal game by a Falcon in just under four years. Tate Robertson scored twice in a win over Valparaiso on Sept. 29, 2018.
• For his efforts, Anaya was named the MAC Player of the Week on Tuesday.
INDIVIDUALLY...
• Alberto Anaya, not surprisingly, leads the Falcons in scoring. The 2021 MAC Freshman of the Year, his nine points include team-high totals of three goals and three assists.
• Sergi Martinez has five points on a pair of goals and an assist, while Joey Akpunonu has four points, with two penalty-kick goals to date. At the other end of the pitch, Akpunonu had three 'team saves' over the two-match span vs. Air Force and Oakland, including a first-half sequence in the Air Force match in which he blocked back-to-back shots off the goal line.
• Brendan Graves and the BGSU back line have allowed just five goals – including one on a PK – in 720 minutes of action. Graves has 18 saves and a goals-against average of 0.63 this season. He now has a career GAA of 1.12 and five shutouts in 15 career starts.
• Akpunonu, Anaya, Graves and Martinez each have started all eight matches this season. Kyle Cusimano, Josh Erlandson, Jensen Lukacsko and Kale Nichols also have started every match, while Amer Dedic and Nathan Masters have made seven starts apiece and Eli Shope six.
THE OPPONENT
• Georgetown enters Saturday's match with an overall record of 2-4-2, and the Hoyas are 1-1-0 in Big East Conference play after a 2-1 win over Creighton last weekend. Jacob Murrell has a team-high total of eight points, on three goals and two assists, while Jack Panyotou has six points on the season. In goal, three players have made at least two starts apiece. Ryan Schewe has a team-low 0.67 goals-against average. Head coach Brian Wiese welcomed back 19 letterwinners, but just four starters, from last year's club that went 18-3-1 overall and 8-2-0 in conference. The 2021 Hoyas won the Big East regular-season and tourney titles and advanced all the way to the national semifinals for the second time in three seasons. Georgetown won the NCAA title in 2019 under Wiese's direction.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Georgetown, 1-0-0, in the all-time series. The teams' only prior meeting was a 1-0 road win for the Falcons on Sept. 10, 1989. BGSU is 19-13-2 against the current Big East teams. The Falcons are 6-4-0 all-time against Xavier, 6-7-1 vs. Marquette, 4-0-1 against DePaul, 1-1-0 against both Butler and Creighton and 1-0-0 vs. the Hoyas. BGSU has never met UConn, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall or Villanova in men's soccer.
UP NEXT
• Following the Georgetown match, the Falcons will close the regular-season schedule with seven-straight MAC matchups, beginning with a home game vs. Akron on Thursday (Oct. 6). First touch for that matchup is 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane, and admission is free.
