Late Georgetown Goal Downs Falcons, 1-0, in DC

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Jack Panyotou knocked home a rebound with just over six minutes to go, lifting Georgetown University to a 1-0 win over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Saturday afternoon (Oct. 1). The match, the final non-conference contest of 2022 for both teams, was held at Shaw Field.
BGSU goalkeeper Brendan Graves made a nifty kick save on a shot by Marlon Tabora from the top of the 18, but Panyotou was first to the rebound, running onto the ball on the left side of the six-yard box and firing it into the far side of the net to give the Hoyas (3-4-2) the lead.
Graves made three saves on the afternoon for the Falcons (2-4-3), while Ryan Schewe had three stops for the hosts.
All four BGSU losses this season have been by identical 1-0 scores.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• The Falcons have allowed just six goals – all in the second half – in nine matches this season to date.
• BGSU has not given up a first-half goal in 11 consecutive contests, dating to November of 2021. All six opponent goals this season have come in the 65th minute of later.
HIGHLIGHTS
• The Falcons fired the first two shots of the match, but Georgetown had what would probably be considered the best chance of the first 40 minutes. A left-side cross found the sliding Jacob Murrell at the six-yard line. Murrell redirected the ball on goal, but Brendan Graves made the save.
• BGSU's best chance of the half came in the 42nd minute, with Trace Terry, Kale Nichols and Sergi Martinez involved in the play. Nichols ran on to a pass near the end line and played the ball back to Martinez on the right side of the penalty area. Martinez fired a quick ball to Terry, who hit a one-time shot from just outside the six-yard line. GU 'keeper Ryan Schewe had no chance to stop Terry's shot, but the ball hit the right goalpost. A follow-up shot by Alberto Anaya was blocked, and the Hoyas were able to clear the ball out of danger.
• Early in the second half, a nifty flick-on by Kyle Cusimano sent the ball toward Nathan Masters, and Masters was fouled on the left side of the field, only about 10 yards away from the goal line. Anaya's free kick sailed into the box and struck several players. Nichols directed the ball toward the goal line before a defender knocked it away. Then, Joey Akpunonu lofted the ball back in, but Schewe leaped to punch it away at the far post.
• With 31 minutes remaining, a long throw-in by Cusimano sailed into the box and glanced off of the head of a leaping Georgetown defender. The Hoyas knocked it out of the penalty area, but Jake Bergin was there to blast a shot from just outside the 18-yard line. Bergin's hard shot, however, was just wide of the target.
• Three minutes later, the Hoyas had a chance against the run of play. Jack Panyotou received a pass on the left side of the box, as Graves came off of his line to cut down the shooting angle. Panyotou's shot attempt went wide of the near post.
• With 16 minutes remaining, Georgetown's Joe Buck fired a hard shot from just outside the box after a corner kick. But, Graves saw the shot all the way, leaping to grab it out of the air.
• But, with 6:07 remaining, the Hoyas got on the board. After a quick throw-in sent the hosts toward the BG goal, Graves made a nice kick save on a shot by Marlon Tabora from the top of the 18. But, Panyotou was first to get to the rebound, firing a shot from the left side of the six-yard box that found the far corner of the goal.
• Just a minute later, the Falcons nearly equalized. Again, a long throw-in put the ball into the box, where it bounced around inside the six-yard area as players from both teams poked at it. Despite some desperate defending from the hosts, Terry got his foot on the ball on the left side of the area, but Schewe finally was able to dive on the ball near the end line.
• Masters was fouled just outside the penalty area as the clock ticked under one minute to go. Anaya took the ensuing free kick, but his curving shot whizzed just wide of the upper-right-hand corner of the goal, and the Hoyas were able to salt away the win.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• The Hoyas had narrow advantages of 13-9 in total shot attempts and 4-3 in shots on goal. BGSU had a slim 3-2 lead in corner kicks.
• Georgetown went 18-3-1 overall last season, advancing all the way to the national semifinals. It was the Hoyas' second College Cup appearance in three years, as GU won the NCAA championship in 2019.
• As mentioned, the Falcons kept the opponent off of the scoreboard in the first half for the 11th consecutive match. BGSU has not allowed a first-half goal since Nov. 11, 2021 (at Northern Illinois in the MAC Tournament).
• Saturday marked the eighth time in nine matches this season that the Falcons were tied, 0-0, at halftime.
• BGSU has not allowed a goal in the first 65 minutes of a match this season.
• The Falcons now have a record of 38-24-10 over the last 72 matches, dating to late in the 2018 season. Sixteen of the 24 setbacks in that time have come by a single goal.
