EVENTS, PROMOTIONS AND HAPPENINGS
• Wednesday marks BGSU's National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration, and there will be a kids clinic from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Stroh. The clinic will feature members of each of BGSU's women's athletic teams interacting and engaging with children to teach the importance of sport participation, leadership and leading a healthy and active lifestyle.
• Additionally, there will be a postgame autograph session with the women's basketball Falcons.
GREAT START!
• The Falcons enter the WMU game with an overall record of 18-2, tying the best 20-game start in program history. Four previous BGSU teams also won 18 of 20 games to begin the season, and all four of those squads wound up winning at least 27 games and advancing to national postseason play (three to the NCAA Championships, one to the WNIT).
• A total of 11 BGSU teams have won at least 17 of the first 20 games of the year.
BRETT COMES UP B!G
• Elissa Brett has been one of the Falcons' top players all season long, but she took her game up another notch in last week's two wins. At Buffalo, Brett led the Falcons with 19 points and seven rebounds, and her final rebound was an offensive board with 9.6 seconds left and the Falcons up by just two points. Her free throw several seconds later capped the scoring in that 64-61 win.
• Three days later at Northern Illinois, Brett had a double-double, with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds, and she also led all players with four steals. Midway through the fourth quarter, after NIU had cut the BGSU lead to 10 points, she knocked down three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to give the Falcons a 60-44 lead.
• Brett has had two double-doubles over the last three games – all wins – and has averaged 17.0 points and 9.7 rebounds per game in that time. She went 9-of-18 from the arc in last week's two victories.
FALCONS TOP LAST YEAR'S WIN TOTAL
• BGSU picked up a 66-50 win at Northern Illinois on Saturday (Jan. 28), in the process improving to 18-2 on the season. The Falcons have topped the team's overall win total for all of last year. The 2021-22 club went 17-16 and advanced to the WBI.
ROAD WARRIORS
• Before the calendar flipped to January, the Falcons already had topped the road win total for all of last season. Last year's team went 4-7 in true road games and 8-11 in all games played away from home (4-4 in neutral-site contests).
• And, before January came to an end, BGSU had more than doubled last season's road win total. Following the win at NIU on Saturday, the 2022-23 Falcons are now 9-2 in true road games and 10-2 in all games played away from home.
HOME COOKIN'
• BG has a record of 8-0 in home games this season. The Falcons have begun the home portion of the schedule with eight-straight wins for just the second time in the Stroh Center Era.
• The 2013-14 club went 16-0 at home before losing to Rutgers in the fourth round of the WNIT.
FINDING WAYS TO WIN
• The Falcons are one of the top-scoring teams in the nation, ranking 13th in the country with 80.6 points per game. BGSU has been held under 70 points just four times in 20 games this season.
• Three of those four games, however, have come in the last three contests. The Falcons scored 66 points on back-to-back Saturdays against Kent State and Northern Illinois, and BG was limited to 64 points at Buffalo in the game in between.
• But, the Falcons held those three opponents to an average of just 56.0 points per game. And, most importantly, BGSU won all three games to improve to 18-2 on the season and 7-1 in the MAC.
SIMPLY STATED
• The Falcons' only two losses this season – against Indiana and Ball State – took place in the state of Indiana. BGSU is 3-2 in games played in the Hoosier State this season, and the Falcons are 15-0 in games played in all other states.
• BGSU is 9-0 in games played in Ohio in 2022-23, and the Falcons are 2-0 in both New York and Texas and 1-0 in both Illinois and Tennessee.
• The Falcons' remaining regular-season schedule includes eight games in Ohio and two in Michigan.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE BRONCOS
• Western Michigan is 9-10 on the season, and the Broncos are 4-4 in the MAC after a 64-38 loss at Kent State Saturday. WMU has lost the last two games after winning the previous four contests.
• Individually, Lauren Ross is averaging 21.8 ppg, but recently suffered a season-ending injury. Taylor Williams has 14.3 ppg along with a team-leading 9.1 rpg.
• Head coach Shane Clipfell's club is 5-3 at home and 4-7 on the road this season. WMU is 2-2 at home and 2-2 on the road in MAC games. Clipfell welcomed back a total of 13 players from a 2021-22 team that went 16-14 overall and 10-10 in MAC regular-season play.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead WMU, 39-36, in the all-time series, but WMU captured the most recent meeting. The teams split last season's two matchups, with the Falcons picking up a 67-51 win at the Stroh (Jan. 26, 2022) and the Broncos taking a 72-64 win in Kalamazoo three weeks later (Feb. 16, 2022). BG had won three consecutive series meetings prior to that Western win.
• The Falcons are 21-14 at home, 15-21 on the road and 3-1 at neutral sites vs. WMU through the years.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following Wednesday's WMU game, the Falcons will remain at home this weekend. BGSU will host Miami on Saturday (Feb. 4), on Title IX Day / Alumnae Day at the Stroh. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will return to the road to face Ohio next Wednesday (Feb. 8) and Kent State three days later (Feb. 11).
