Spurgin Tallies First BGSU Double-Double As Falcons Fall To Golden Grizzlies

Jason Spurgin Leads Team With 17 Points, 10 Rebounds
ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team made their first road trip of the season on Tuesday night (Nov. 14), taking on the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. Oakland, who entered with two Big Ten games under their belt, took an early lead and didn't surrender the score to the Falcons, taking an 81-62 final. The loss is just the first for the Falcons this season, now 2-1 through three games.
BGSU was paced by Jason Spurgin who tallied his first double-double of the season, leading the team in both points (17) and rebounds (10). Sam Towns nearly added a double-double of his own, concluding the game with 10 points and nine rebounds. Rashaun Agee filled the stat sheet for the Falcons as well, logging eight points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal.Â

The Falcons will return home to the Stroh Center for their next game scheduled for Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. against Bellarmine. From there, the Orange and Brown will head to the Northern Classic in Montreal from Nov. 24-26.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Oakland began with a 7-0 run to start the game before Marcus Hill got a layup to fall for the first BGSU points of the game. On the next possession, Rashaun Agee found Jason Spurgin under the rim for a dunk to make it a 7-4 score at the first media break.
- The next points out of the timeout came from a PJ Edwards triple from the top of the key to make it a 7-0 answer for the Falcons, tying it up at 7-7.
- Oakland made the next basket, but Agee swiped a steal and soared for the slam to keep it tied 9-9.
- The Golden Grizzlies tallied back-to-back threes to reclaim the lead at 15-9 before a Sam Towns layup narrowed the gap to 15-11 at the second media timeout of the half.
- Another 6-0 run for Oakland extended their lead to 21-11 to force a Bowling Green timeout.
- The Falcons worked to trim the lead, but a 5-0 burst for Oakland pushed their lead back to double-digits at 30-20 before a Bowling Green basket cut it down to eight at the media timeout, 30-22.
- The Falcons again worked to cut down the deficit, utilizing a 6-0 run to make it just a four-point Oakland lead at 32-28.
- The Golden Grizzlies closed out the first half with a 6-0 run of their own to stretch their lead back to 10 with a 38-28 halftime tally.
- Early in the second half, the Falcons put together a 5-0 burst to trim the lead down 41-34 with the score at 45-34 at the first media timeout of the half.
- A 12-0 run later in the half pushed the deficit above 20 for the Falcons with a 73-52 score going into the final media timeout.
- The Falcons were able to answer with a 7-0 run of their own to bring the score to 73-59.
- Oakland closed out the game with a 6-0 run to secure the 81-62 final.Â

- DJ Smith tied for the team lead for three-pointers made in the game, making his first two in the Orange and Brown, finishing with eight points.Â
- Da'Shawn Phillip made his first start for the Falcons after starting 77 games at Maryland Eastern Shore. Phillip recorded a team-leading two steals in the game.Â
- Playing a career-high 31 minutes, Rashaun Agee tallied eight points and six rebounds for Bowling Green while registering his first two blocks of the season.Â
- The all-time series between Bowling Green and Oakland is now tied with six wins for each team.
