Falcons Return Home Friday For Battle With Bellarmine
November 16, 2023 | Men's Basketball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team will return to the Stroh Center for their third home game of the season on Friday (Nov. 17). The Falcons will be hosting the Bellarmine Knights for a 7 p.m. tip, marking the first game in program history between the two teams.Â
Opening Tip
Bellarmine will be the 317th unique opponent for the Falcons during the history of the program with BGSU tally wins over 262 different teams thus far. The Falcons will be looking to bounce back after their first loss of the season on Tuesday (Nov. 14) to Oakland. For the student section, and all fans wanting to partake, Friday night will be Neon Night at the Stroh Center.Â
A Bowling Green Win Would…
Scouting The Knights
Bellarmine will enter the game against Bowling Green with an 0-3 record after facing three tough opponents, with all their games being played on the road thus far. The Knights began the 2023-24 campaign in Seattle, facing Washington in a 91-57 final. Bellarmine bounced back with a trip against Kansas State, nearly topping the Wildcats in an 83-75 final score, out-scoring KSU 44-37 in the second half. In their most recent game, Bellarmine faced Tennessee at Chattanooga, coming up short in a 72-64 score after trailing by just three at halftime. The Knights will conclude their road trip to open the season against the Falcons before returning home on Nov. 20.Â
Blocking Out The NoiseÂ
Through the first three games of the season, the Falcons are one of the best shot-blocking teams in the Mid-American Conference. Bowling Green has tallied 13 rejections, averaging 4.3 per game, which is tied atop the MAC with Northern Illinois. Jason Spurgin has led the block party with six, having three in both of the first two games, before Rashaun Agee took over with two against Oakland.
Defensive MindsetÂ
Despite the loss to Oakland, the Falcons are still one of the best teams in the MAC defensively when it comes to points allowed. BGSU has allowed just 65.7 points per game thus far with only Ball State (53.0) and Akron (61.7) giving up fewer. Bowling Green, Ball State and Akron are the only teams in the MAC giving up fewer than 70 points per game. The Falcons have also held their opponent to a 41.6% field goal percentage, which ranks fifth in the conference.Â
The Jason Spurgin ImpactÂ
Coming to the Falcons from Southern Utah, Jason Spurgin has immediately made his impact known on the Bowling Green roster. Against Oakland, Spurgin recorded the first double-double by a Falcon this season, finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds. He posted two double-doubles last year for Southern Utah. Spurgin is also currently second in the MAC for blocks per game with 2.0, totaling six through the first three games of the season.
Seeing DoubleÂ
With Jason Spurgin recording 10 rebounds against Oakland, the Falcons are now one of two teams in the MAC to have two different players record 10 or more rebounds in a game this season. Da'Shawn Phillip tallied 10 against Chicago State in the season opener. Buffalo is the other team with Jonnivius Smith posting two double-digit rebound games and Sy Chatman logging one. Akron's Enrique Freeman has two himself but is the only Zip to hit the mark.
My Kind Of TownsÂ
In the game against Oakland, Sam Towns just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. The rebound total tied Towns for the team-lead in rebounds per game with Rashaun Agee, both averaging 6.7. Towns and Agee are tied for eighth in the MAC with Jason Spurgin close behind in 12th at 6.0. Bowling Green is the only team with three players inside the Top 12 in the conference for rebounds per game. Buffalo and WMU each have two.
