XC Continues Postseason on Friday at Great Lakes Regionals
November 07, 2023 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's and women's Cross Country teams will head into their second postseason meet of the season at the Great Lakes Regionals in Madison, Wisconsin on Friday (11/10).
2023 Great Lakes Regional Championships
The 2023 Great Lakes Regional Champions will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wisconsin. The school previously hosted the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championship and is a future site in 2024. The 2023 Great Lakes Regional Championship will consist of a women's 6k race starting at 11:30am CST as well as the men's 10k race at 12:30pm CST.
Men Squad Ready to Face Top Regional Talent
The men's squad will enter the 2023 Great Lakes Championships as an underdog and will look to compete with the top talent from across the Great Lakes region. The Falcons have been led by Heriberto Alvarez and Anthony Sweet all season long. Alvarez has led the Falcons throughout the majority of the season by finishing first among the team in three out of the five meets the team has participated in. Of the two times that Alvarez was not the first Falcon to cross the finish line, Anthony Sweet placed competitively to serve as the top finisher among the team. Sweet entered the season after transferring in from Ohio State. The Cleveland native also saw brief stints at Kent State and Western Kentucky prior to Ohio State. Since his arrival in Bowling Green, Anthony Sweet has complemented the team with competitive finishes such as a 25:00.2 8k personal record that was set at the 2023 MAC Championships in late October. The men's side has seen competitive finishes from AJ Haffa, Micah Bentley, and Christian Gagliardi as well.
Women Look for Best Regional Results in Decades
The women's side enter the 2023 Great Lakes Regional Championships ranked 12th among the region. The Falcons return to action after hosting the 2023 Mid-American Conference Championships where the team placed 4th among the field. In that effort, true Sophomore Kylee Cubbison earned All-MAC Second Team honors following an 11th place finish with a 6k time of 21:01.35 which set a personal record. The team has also seen reliable and quality finishes from Kaliee Perry as well. The Kentucky native won one race for the Falcons this season at the Tommy Evans Invitational in early September. Perry crossed the finish line first among the field at 17:50.4 which set a 5k personal record. In that race, Cubbison finished right behind Perry in 2nd with a time of 18:04.8 which also set a personal record. The team would go on to win the Tommy Evans Invitational in comfortable fashion. In addition to their early season victory, the women's side also claimed victory at home while hosting the Falcon Invite in mid-October. Cubbsion and Perry, once again, were the first and second Falcons to cross the finish line with times of 21:22.7 (4th) and 21:33.8 (5th), respectively. The Falcons have also seen competitive placements from depth runners such as Regina Rose, Katerina Shuble, and Kristin Groppe. All three runners have consistently placed in the top 5 spots for the Falcons throughout the 2023 campaign and will look to carry those performances into the Great Lakes Regional Championships.
The women's squad looks towards the championships in hopes of securing their best finish in the past decade. The Falcons have not placed within the top 10 teams since the 2015-16 season where the team tallied only 306 points. With elite talent at hand, the Falcons will try to break that record this weekend.
A Look at the Competition
The women's 6k championship race will feature a 34-team field from across the region which includes the states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The women's field will consist of all 15 teams that are currently ranked in the Great Lakes Region. The Falcons will also see a handful of familiar faces with nine other MAC Schools competing in the championship race. In addition to the Falcons being ranked 12th in the region, the competition throughout MAC schools such as Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Ohio, Akron, and Central Michigan all ranked within the top 15 spots of the region.
The men's race will see a slightly smaller field than the women's with 31 teams in contention. The men's championship race will feature seven teams from the MAC in Miami, Ohio, Toledo, Central Michigan, Akron, Eastern Michigan, and Kent State. Of the MAC schools in contention, three schools in Akron, Miami, and Toledo are ranked in the top 15 among the Great Lakes Region.
