BGSU to play four games in T-Mobile Tournament in Gainesville

SETTING THE SCENE
• The Bowling Green State University softball team heads to Gainesville, Fla., for week two of the 2023 season. Head coach Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and the Falcons are set to play four games in the T-Mobile Tournament, hosted by the University of Florida.
• BGSU is slated to play back-to-back games on Friday (Feb. 17), facing Delaware State and Connecticut, with the DSU game scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
• Then, on Saturday (Feb. 18), the Falcons will meet No. 3 Florida in a 10:30 a.m. start. BG ends weekend action with a Sunday (Feb. 19) contest vs. UConn, starting at 9:00 a.m.
• All games in the tournament will take place at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.
• Fenton-Bockbrader picked up the first win of her collegiate head-coaching career, as the Falcons topped Detroit Mercy, 3-2, in the 2023 season opener last Friday (Feb. 10). The Orange and Brown went 2-3 at the DePaul Dome Tournament in Rosemont, Ill., to begin the season.
A FEW NOTES FROM LAST WEEKEND
• BGSU used a total of five starting pitchers during all of last season, a total of 55 games. This year, the Falcons had five different starters in the first five games.
• Similarly, a total of 21 players saw action in at least one game last spring. This season, through just five games, 21 different Falcons have taken the field at least once.
• Hannah Davies pitched a total of 24 innings last season, going 2-1 with a 5.54 ERA. In the first weekend of 2023, Davies appeared in three of the Falcons' five games, pitching 16 2/3 innings.
• Davies had an ERA of just 1.68 last weekend, striking out 13 batters and allowing opponents to hit just .169 against her.
• Makailah Dees had the first three-hit game of her career in Saturday's win over Valparaiso, with a single, a double and a triple in four at-bats. Dees, who had a total of three RBI in her first two seasons as a Falcon, had three in the Valpo game alone, and now has a team-leading four RBI this year.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
• Fenton-Bockbrader and assistant coaches Erinn Gankosky and Jacob Jeffries welcomed back 13 returning letterwinners from last year's club. The 2022 Falcons went 34-21 (.618) overall and 16-11 (.593) in Mid-American Conference play, good for fourth place in the 11-team league.
• BGSU's total of 34 victories was the program's highest in a decade, and the Falcons' overall and league-only winning percentages also were the best since 2012.
• The Falcons qualified for the 2022 MAC Tournament and advanced all the way to the championship game. Then, BG participated in national postseason play, heading to Fort Collins, Colo., and winning two games in the National Invitational Softball Championship. Those wins, over Stephen F. Austin and George Washington, were the first national postseason victories in BGSU softball history.
• In the classroom, a school-record 13 Falcons were named to the Academic All-MAC Team, while 15 team members were named Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes for the 2021-22 academic year.
THIS SEASON SO FAR
• The Falcons are 2-3 after one weekend of play. BGSU picked up wins over Detroit Mercy and Valparaiso, while falling to DePaul, Eastern Kentucky and Western Illinois at the DePaul Dome Tournament.
• BGSU scored 11 runs and allowed 11 runs on the weekend. Five pitchers saw action, with four of them allowing opponents to hit between .125 and .169 on the weekend. As a staff, the Falcons have an opponent batting average of .161.
• Hannah Davies led the way, pitching a total of 16 2/3 innings over three games. She struck out 13 batters and allowed just 10 hits, and has an ERA of 1.68.
• Mackenzie Krafcik has a 1.75 ERA, and picked up a save by retiring six-straight batters in her collegiate debut. That save came in relief of Sydney Stepp, who earned the win with five innings of two-hit ball i the season opener vs. UDM. Stepp has an ERA of 2.80 and an OBA of just .125.
• In her Falcon debut, Scarlet Anderson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before settling for a complete-game win over Valpo. Anderson has a 2.00 ERA and a .148 OBA.
• At the plate, Sophie Weber hit a team-leading .333 in Rosemont. The lone Falcon to start all five games last weekend, her five hits included a pair of doubles. Makailah Dees and Delaney Davis each hit .286 and Reagan Williamson .273. Dees leads the Falcons with three runs scored and four RBI, while Davis was 2-for-2 in stolen bases.
• Delaware State opens the 2023 season with a Thursday doubleheader vs. Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga., before meeting the Falcons in Gainesville the next morning. Last year, the Hornets went 4-33 overall and 3-17 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Head coach Daniel Stockdale's 21-player roster includes 12 freshmen.
• Connecticut is 1-2 after opening the season at last weekend's Buzz Classic. The Huskies split a pair of one-run games vs. host Georgia Tech before falling to North Texas. UConn was picked to finish third in the Big East Conference in 2023. Last spring, head coach Laura Valentino's club went 38-18 overall and won the Big East regular-season title with a 20-4 conference mark.
• Florida is 4-0 on the season, and the Gators are ranked No. 3 in the nation. UF has won all four games via run-rule, outscoring the opponents - Boston University, Boston College, Illinois State and Jacksonville – by a combined score of 54-4. The Gators face JU on Wednesday night before beginning tourney play on Friday. Last season, head coach Tim Walton's team went 49-19 overall and 13-11 in the Southeastern Conference, advancing to the Women's College World Series. The Gators were picked to win the SEC in 2023, according to the preseason coaches' poll.
• BGSU and Connecticut are tied, 1-1, in the all-time series, and the teams have not met in nearly three decades. The Falcons captured a 4-1 decision in Sacramento, Calif., in March of 1994. The teams' only other meeting was a 6-1 UConn victory in Columbia, S.C., in 1985.
• The Falcons have never faced Delaware State or Florida on the softball diamond.
• Following this weekend's action in Gainesville, the Falcons will head to Evansville, Ind., for five games in the UE Softball Invitational II (Feb. 24-26). BGSU is slated to open that tourney against Purdue Fort Wayne before facing St. Thomas and the host school, Evansville, twice each.
