BGSU falls to UConn to split Friday's games in Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Bowling Green State University softball team jumped on top of Delaware State University early on Friday morning (Feb. 17), rolling along to an 11-1 win in the opening game of the T-Mobile Tournament. The three-day event is taking place at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.
The Falcons' second game of the day had the opposite outcome, as the University of Connecticut took an early lead and went on to a 13-1 decision.
In the opener, the Falcons (now 3-4 after Friday's two games) pounded out 12 hits, with Reagan Williamson leading the way. Williamson was 3-for-3, scoring one run and driving in four.
Sophie Weber and Peyton Dolejs each went 2-for-3, with Weber, Ally Bezjak and Marlie McNulty all scoring a pair of runs in the win.
In the circle, Scarlet Anderson allowed three hits – all of which were bunt singles – to pick up the win over the Hornets (2-1). Mackenzie Krafcik provided two innings of hitless relief.
In game two, the Huskies (2-2) jumped on top early, with a five-run first, and UConn was never headed. Weber had a double and scored BG's lone run, with Maycee Godbolt driving her home.
Anderson made her first plate appearances of the season, and picked up her first collegiate hit in Friday's second game.
QUOTING COACH CANDACE FENTON-BOCKBRADER
"I can't express how proud I am of this team and program! Everyone is playing for each other, and we are really growing as a team! They continue to learn and develop, taking all the wins and losses and learning from them. They are committed, and they are bought into the process! We have already faced a lot of adversity, and they are using it to fuel their motivation!"
DELAWARE STATE GAME – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Scarlet Anderson set down the Hornets in the first, allowing only a two-out bunt single, before the BG offense went to work. The bottom of the inning saw Makailah Dees and Marlie McNulty draw back-to-back walks against DSU starting pitcher McKenzie Yurcaba
• A ground ball moved the runners up 60 feet each, and Reagan Williamson singled through the right side to score them both. Pinch-runner Delaney Davis stole second before Ally Bezjak brought her home with a single through the left side. But, the Falcons weren't finished.
• Marti Henkel reached on an error, and Peyton Dolejs followed with an RBI single to give the Orange and Brown a four-run lead.
• In the bottom of the second, BGSU scored five runs, all after the first two batters struck out. Sophie Weber and Williamson had back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners, and Bezjak walked to load the bases.
• Henkel's single plated Weber, and two more runs scored when Dolejs reached on an error. Then, Hannah Hunt singled to score Henkel, and Wynnie Reid's base hit brought Dolejs home with the Falcons' ninth run.
• The Hornets got an unearned run in the third, on a pair of bunt singles, a wild pitch and a throwing error, but BGSU responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
• McNulty began the BG third with a single, and a Weber double put two Falcons in scoring position for Williamson. She came through with her second two-run single of the game, giving the Falcons a 10-run lead.
• Mackenzie Krafcik replaced Anderson in the circle for the fourth inning, and after walking the leadoff hitter, retired the next five. She issued a two-out base on balls in the fifth, before getting an inning- and game-ending strikeout.
CONNECTICUT GAME – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Huskies scored five times in the first inning, with four hits and a walk. The big blow was a double by Grace Jenkins.
• Jenkins would homer in the second inning, with a hit batter, a passed ball and a single bringing home another run.
• The Huskies went down in order in the third against Krafcik, but exploded for six more runs in the fourth. Jenkins began that inning with her second homer of the game, and UConn had three doubles in the frame as well.
• Meghan O'Neil faced just one batter over the minimum (a first-inning walk to Davis) in the first three innings, but BG reached her for three-straight hits in the fourth. Weber had a one-out double, then scored on a Maycee Godbolt single. Anderson, making her second at-bat of the game and the season, followed with a single of her own, but O'Neil retired the next two Falcons. And, she set down three BGSU pinch-hitters in order in the fifth to close out the win.
