Falcons Head to Evansville for Third Tourney in as Many Weekends
February 22, 2023 | Softball
SETTING THE SCENE
• The Bowling Green State University softball team heads to Evansville, Ind., for the Falcons' third tournament in as many weekends. Head coach Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and the Falcons will play five games in the 2023 Aces Home Tournament #2.
• BGSU is slated to play a pair of Friday (Feb. 24) games, facing Purdue Fort Wayne in the morning and St. Thomas in the afternoon. On Saturday (Feb. 25), the Orange and Brown will meet the host school, Evansville, before facing the Tommies once again.
• Then, on Sunday (Feb. 26), BG's weekend concludes with another contest vs. UE. All tournament games are scheduled to be played at Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at James and Dorothy Cooper Stadium.
• The Falcons are 3-6 on the young season. BGSU opened the 2023 schedule by going 2-3 at the DePaul Dome Tournament in Rosemont Ill. Among the wins was a 3-2 victory over Detroit Mercy in the season opener (Feb. 10), the first win of Fenton-Bockbrader's collegiate head-coaching career.
• Last weekend, BGSU played four games at the T-Mobile Tournament, hosted by Florida. THe Falcons posted a run-rule win over Delaware State, and gave third-ranked Florida a scare before falling, 10-7.
A FEW NOTES FROM LAST WEEKEND
• As mentioned above, the Falcons gave No. 3-ranked Florida everything the Gators wanted and more on Saturday (Feb. 18). The Falcons twice rallied from multiple-run deficits, and BGSU took the lead in the fifth inning, but the hosts ultimately came away with a 10-7 win.
• The Falcons pounded out 12 hits against three Florida pitchers in the contest, rallying from an early deficit with a four-run third inning that briefly tied the score.
• The Gators retook the lead, but BGSU pushed three runs across the board in the fifth to go ahead by a 7-6 score. It marked the first time Florida had trailed this season.
• But, the nationally-ranked hosts countered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, then added a run in the sixth for the final margin.
• The Gators entered Saturday's action with a 6-0 record on the young season, and Florida had outscored opponents, 74-5, in those six games. BGSU outscored those six opponents combined.
• BGSU became the first team this season to force Florida to play a seven-inning game, and, as mentioned, the Falcons were the first team to take a lead against the Gators in 2023.
• The Falcons hit .364 in the UF game, and BGSU batted .462 (6-of-13) with two outs and .563 (9-for-16) with runners on base. BG also hit .615 (8-for-13) with runners in scoring position against the Gators, and the Falcons were 4-for-5 (.800) with the bases loaded.
• Sophie Weber had a second-straight solid weekend at the plate. She batted .583 (7-for-12) in Gainesville, scoring six runs in the four contests. Weber is hitting .444 on the season, with a .593 slugging percentage.
• Weber has had four multiple-hit games in the last six contests, including three in BG's four games in Florida. She has had at least one hit in eight of the Falcons' nine games this season.
• Reagan Williamson went 3-for-3 in Friday's 11-1 win over Delaware State, tying her career best for hits in a game. She has now had five three-hit games as a Falcon. Williamson had four RBI vs. the Hornets, setting a new career high.
• For Hannah Davies, the final stats do not reflect how well she pitched against the third-ranked team in the nation on the road Saturday. Davies pitched five innings against the Gators and now has thrown more than half of the team's innings (28 of 55 1/3) in the circle this season.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
• Fenton-Bockbrader and assistant coaches Erinn Gankosky and Jacob Jeffries welcomed back 13 returning letterwinners from last year's club. The 2022 Falcons went 34-21 (.618) overall and 16-11 (.593) in Mid-American Conference play, good for fourth place in the 11-team league.
• BGSU's total of 34 victories was the program's highest in a decade, and the Falcons' overall and league-only winning percentages also were the best since 2012.
• The Falcons qualified for the 2022 MAC Tournament and advanced all the way to the championship game. Then, BG participated in national postseason play, heading to Fort Collins, Colo., and winning two games in the National Invitational Softball Championship. Those wins, over Stephen F. Austin and George Washington, were the first national postseason victories in BGSU softball history.
• In the classroom, a school-record 13 Falcons were named to the Academic All-MAC Team, while 15 team members were named Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes for the 2021-22 academic year.
